I used to love going to Sears in Hackensack around Christmas time in the late 50's when they'd take down the "Outdoor Living Center" (Lawn Mowers, garden tools, etc) and put up the Lionel Trains!!---- And the Macy's "Thanksgiving Day Parade" was brought tou you by "Lionel Trains"!!
Wow!! Wow!! I grew up in Sparkill,Ny!!!--- (TZ Class of'67) Yesss!!!--- The last commuter ran to Nyack Dec1966. Now they would layover in Sparkill-- This lasted till Mar 1967.Then commuter svc was discontinued. They used 900 series Alcos running long hood fwd, and an occasional 1400 series Geep. Only 1 time an Alco broke down, and an Nw2 (Either 418 or 424) Came in on the 6:21!!
Ive lived along this line my whole life and can say this is the best documentation of the Northern Branch Ive seen. Really captured a lot of rare angles. Around Sparkill and Demarest. Need to see some footage from Sparkill to Nanuet! Great Video!
Yeah its the first footage of the NY section I've ever seen, picture or film. Sad to see all of that is gone now. Rockland County has lost a ton of rail infrastructure.
A wonderful video and priceless footage! A part of this line is still in use a couple times a week , the part from North Bergen until Englewood. A factory in Englewood receives tank cars with edible oil for processing and packing
This footage was used in a Mark I Video back in the 80s. I can't remember which one. I haven't seen a copy in years. Besides, this is a better quality transfer than Mark (Balkin...RIP) could've done back then.
@@RailroadMediaArchive At the 8:37 mark, the station with the White car in the foreground is too small to be the much larger Sparkill Station. Could this station be the Tappan, NY station?
neat seeing the original Erie railroad wings! so nice to see them running down the tracks sad knowing they are another fallen flag, all the roads that were in my area so nice seeing all the old colors, over now basically 4 roads in the NE now. great video, so nice that someone thought about saving the piece of history.
This footage is gold! Thanks so much for posting. Grew up right up the hill in North Bergen in the 60's/70's. Many good times exploring the area with friends.
The "9:40" local in Sparkill,Ny on Erie's "Piermont Branch"--- That's about the time it would arrive from Suffern, pick up the cars from the previous days "4:10" (From Hoboken), then it would pull down past the "Spring Switch", Then push the train to Piermont to Continenta Can, usually about 8-12 cars--Except that one time they were "Busy" and pushed 20 cars to Piermont!! A 900 series Alco was the power, Mon -Sat it ran
"The Sunday PA's"---Sparkill,Ny--5:20 One Sunday in late October 1963 at about 5:20 i heard a train. ( On a Sunday?, I said) I got out my bike (which i didn't ride on Sundays) and rode up to the tracks and coming around the curve on the "Suffern Main" were two PA's and a long string of passenger cars. They crossed over Edward St, Then Main St, Then stopped blocking both crossings. They sat there for about 15 minutes. Some guy yelled out from a vestibule "Is this California?" I said "No". (It must have been the "Excursion" that was mentioned in the June '63 Issue of "Trains") After about 15 mins they pulled out and all was quiet again for a Sunday
After the commuter svc stopped, we still had 2 locals--- The "4:10" up from Hoboken-- It worked the industries in northern NJ, Then to Sparkill, to drop cars for the next days "9:40" from Suffern--- It would drop the cars, then had to back thru the wye towards Piermont and then they would have to sit and wait for the three commuter trains to pass headed to Nyack. The "6:21, the "6:51" and the "7:26". Then they could leave and head back to Hoboken
The "9:40" from Suffern would pick up those cars, then pull down past the "Spring Switch" then push the train to Piermont to "Continental Can"!! Usually about 8-10 cars---(Except that one time they were "Busy" that one day and pushed 20!! cars to Piermont!!) They used a 900 series Alco running short hood fwd
Wish that I had ridden this at least once. When Northern Branch trains finally moved to Hoboken Terminal, years after the rest of the Erie trains switched to Hoboken, there was a shove move required in each direction to get the trains onto and off ofthe branch. Erie and Susquehanna trains shared each other's lines as a sort of two track main until where the Susquehanna line turned west.
@@RailroadMediaArchive Thank you for posting this Northern Branch footage. If you ever come across footage of the missing stations, along the line, please post as I would love to see the train stations for: Tenafly, Englewood, Cresskill, Closter, Norwood, Northvale, Tappan, and the lower Piermont train station, in downtown Piermont, just before the Can Company neighborhood along the Hudson River. If i'm not mistaken, the Erie/Northern Branch, after leaving Jersey City, had to back into the Hoboken Erie Lackawanna, and Edgewater Train Stations, and then head back out connecting onto the Erie/Northern Branch, which added more time to the actual Jersey City to downtown Nyack trip. Thank you again.
I can't please everyone. I loathe non-authentic train sounds and setting films to music, and I get snarky comments if I upload silent films without audio, so projector noise it is.
Would that be the lower Piermont train station? The one that branched off to the right just as it entered the downtown Piermont neighborhood, ending near the old Can Company on the Hudson River, which is now a high rise condominium?

This is absolute gold! Seeing Sparkill in action is a real treat!

Both the Pascack Valley and Northern Branch line footage is very rare.

Thank you for all these videos you have released. Great stuff!
Only rode the Northern once and that was the very last passenger train along with other railfans.

4:11 You should have the sound effects of the passenger cars clacking like off of The Panhandle series vol 4 & 5! 😂

Ridgefield, Palisades Park, Leonia, Englewood would love to see more of.
Happy to finally see footage of the Piermont branch
Thank you for sharing.👍
Outstanding! Thanx from Nyack!
Wow, what a fantastic share!
Would love to see some northern branch footage farther south, especially Cresskill area.
Love the old train depots in the films.
That first train out of JC looks like a Susquehanna.
It is.

This is another awesome video. Any Public Service trolley video in Bergan County ?
No.
AMAZING!
Oops, no Bergenfield on the Northern Branch, that's the Westshore. Could that be Ridgefield I think.
Thanks - fixed.
Great Platform... but you really need a sound track.

1976 saw some of the last paper and lumber trains into piermont
