    I like the realistic look. It makes me feel that they spent a lot of time on the plugin. The collapse button was a really great idea. And for a plugin that takes up this much screen space it is much needed.

    This UI seems to be a thing you come back to a lot and while you make a very solid point I feel like there is a distinction to be made. I agree with what you're saying when we're talking tools, like EQ, compression, de-essing and limiting. I love Fabfilter for these tasks because they make work efficient, insightfull and hassle-free.
    When we're talking creative effects (or even vintage-vibe FX like tape emulators or vintage modeled EQ's and compressors known for their vibe more then their uncanny ability to add distortion-free processing) I kind of love a skeumorphic UI for two main reasons. One is mentioned in a lot of other comments I've read, which is: A nice visual presentation can sort of trigger inspiration. But it is also a way to quickly find your way around a plugin, and even more so around various plugins. One has big buttons, one has smaller ones. Labeled, unlabled. Maybe the drive button has a grittyer look then the feedback button? I tend to loose my way on OSC-esque-controllersa lot for example. They're clean and efficient, but I keep having to read the label because the buttons themselves don't tell me anything. Echorec actually goes a step further, because the visual representation actually tells a story about what you're doing!
    For the non believers: I believe in Cubase/Nuendo you can actually shut the UI off and have a list of labled controllers if you'd like. Wouldn't surprise me if you could do the same in Reaper and maybe other DAWs.

    Hi there Wytse @White Sea Studio. You missed two features of this overly skeuomomorphic designed plugin; 1-) An Off mode allowing to use the plug-in as saturation without delay.
    2-) Finger modulation of the disk speed (that's why your mouse pointer became active when over the spinning disk).

    I have to somewhat disagree with you. Some plugin that designed with that modern flat look actually worse IMO (looking at you, Voxengo, and also Ableton, ofc not the newest ableton plugin like the Wavetable), because their UI doesn't really 'inspire' you to use them. Ofc it's the brilliance of Fabfilter's designer to design such an intuitive and usable modern UI, but I also really like some of those skeumorphic UI like those in Arturia plugin.

    I demoed this plugin a while a go. I really like it on vocals and guitars and you can also use it as a distortion effect since you can set the delay on 0. I played with it and I think the GUI is pretty nice and easy to learn but in the end I didn't buy it. Although I really like the sound of it but I didn't buy it because sometimes I like to tweak a bit more. I went for the ValHalla Delay. Cheaper and more flexible!

    Do you have Logic? I think you would like a feature logic has: in the top right of any plugin is an option called “view”. This switches between the flashy/rusty/moving-graphic interface of the plugin, and “controls”, which is just bare bones sliders and value fields. I use it to keep some plugins on the screen since they become VERY small.
    Personally I HATE plugins like this one with useless moving graphics. Not only does it take up real estate, but it’s taxing your GPU unnecessarily. GPU isn’t something we generally think about, but we want our wave forms and meters to be snappy and accurate in real time.

As a control freak, I want this immediately: I can tell it EXACTLY how many echoes to create, and how loud they will be, it will sync to tempo, and the tone controls appear to be just right. So you have sold me on this plugin! I will first check out their website and then probably just buy it because it ticks off all the boxes in what I have been looking for. Thanks for this!

    It would have been useful to know how it stacks up to other tape delay plugins. Also, the way the tape speed affected frequency on your hardware unit, is that a desirable thing? Because, if not, there is no reason to put it on a plugin, even if you are trying to make a faithful recreation of the old hardware. Anyway, this does sound like it could be useful on more than just a few tracks.

    i agree with your point that there should be options with analog interfaces and a more simplified fab filter like interface, but i think you constantly complain about GUI, without an understanding of why it is important. Its valuable to markteting, its valuable to some people who are used to analog and want it to look like what they're used to. Its a way of transition those people to digital by setting them at ease. Its also about encouraging creativity in some people by the aesthetic and "vibe" rather than cold menus and data. You want to focus on work flow, but most artistic types and really people in general judge with their eyes. If someone made you two sandwiches, both with all the same content, but one was made with detailed consideration for presentation, and the other was just thrown together into a paper bag, how would it make you feel? would you be as enthusiastic about trying the paper bag junk sandwich? Aesthetic does not mean quality by default, but it is valuable when trying to do anything related in sales and trying to catch the eye of consumers.

      At the end of the day, it's a personal aesthetic preference, but at times I think that Wytse just doesn't understand the concept of that. And the concept that people like looking at analog interfaces, be it on the screen or on the hardware. They are pleasant to look at and can even add inspiration for music. And his constant repeats of interface rants in plugin reviews are honestly rather tiring. To the point that I just might watch his other things like console and hardware related stuff, along with general mastering vids and misc reviews, and skip the plugin reviews entirely.

      Aesthetics costs performance, always ...and especially intuitive workflow.
      If you do it long enough, you don't give a shit about aesthetics. This is all short-term marketing, probably because it doesn't sell as much as it looks.
      It's the same with this plugin, all the aesthectics and supposedly a full emulation....and it's not.

    • @TheNightquaker
      @TheNightquaker 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Projacked1 Nope. Aesthetics doesn't always cost performance. That dependency varies on case-by-case basis and is not absolute. And besides, there are plenty of great emulations with analog-looking interfaces.

    • @rui5421
      @rui5421 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Projacked1 I think the flaw is the implication that many makers are intentionally trying to cover up flaws in their software by putting a pretty coat on it. I mean if every compressor came with some pull down menus and some flat sliders, how do makers appeal to consumers? how do they get people to try their product? How do they get their funding to make their products better over time? thats the long game. No company comes out with the best product ever, no updates, no v2, best product period first try. They evolve, and to do that as a new developer means getting customers. Satisfying those customers for now with what you can reasonably achieve with your technology and budget, and then building up new ideas and new innovations over time. Its a high bar to set when we say that companies need to come out of the gates with a better product than legacy companies that have history and far more captial from their history of products. Should they have new ideas? absolutely, but should we expect a fabfilter killer to emerge out of nowhere from version 1? I dont think so. To get them there, marketing, aesthetics and system are all valid parts to the ultimate goal.

They can just start instantly work with it. But I fully agree with need to innovate not just copy the same thing again and again under different brands. And some of them are trying to do both. Like not fixed freq in soft, more choices, variations or even completely new mode not found in original hardware.

    In addition to Valhalla Delay, check out Augustus Loop. Tape instead of disk, otherwise it does everything this Echorec sim will do and *much* more. If you know what the delay ratios on the Echorec taps are, it’s pretty easy to set up an “Echorec” preset on it. Only you get a plugin with a lot more capability (looping, long “frippertronic” delay times, digital/tape sim, complete control of filters, saturation, etc). IIRC it’s roughly the same price as this one too.

I'm not a fan of the Izotope style interfaces, though I use almost all their plugins. They feel a bit cold and sterile to me, but it's only a preference and has nothing to do with the sound. I did extensive demoing between all 3 over a couple weeks, and in blind tests the Audiority was the most preferred, with the Pulsar being a pretty close 2nd.
      The Overloud isn't bad or anything, but it has a more "digital" vibe than the Audiority and Pulsar versions. Not "digital" necessarily in terms of pure sound, but more so digital in the way that it behaves a little too cleanly and precisely.
      The Audiority on the other hand behaves astonishingly like the analog tape delays I've owned in the past. I couldn't believe my ears.
      All that being said, that's not a knock on the other companies' work.
      For example, Overloud's GEM 670 (Fairchild 670) is my/our favorite Fairchild modeled plugin. And the Pulsar Mu (Manley Vari-Mu) is amazing.
      Hope this helps give you some ideas and perspective!
      tl;dr - All 3 are solid, pro level plugins that could be used to make hits, but to my ears, the Audiority comes away with the win.

    Since 99% of plugin buyers have zero experience with the original hardware the idea that it will "help" the user understand "how or why" to get results is ridiculous. You can be sure that the "original" hardware would look completely different if the manufacturers did not have to worry about technical limitations or manufacturing costs - they would've been much more adventurous with their hardware designs both in "ergonomics" and excessive "bling" to make their product stand out on a shelf next to their competitors. Like the excessive use of chrome and tail fins in 1950s American cars ;-) Computer GUIs have no limits, and frankly, are most useful when they visualize parameters so well that you can achieve desired results even with the audio effect muted. FabFilter and Izotope are two brilliant examples... another is UVI - their Relayer Delay is the most comprehensive I've ever used AND it's GUI is outstanding (well worth a review!).

    The spinning disc looks cool. I wonder if they modelled this thing in 3d and rendered it on 2d surface. What I would like in these skeudomorphic interfaces are spinbox controls under the knobs. So that you can click an up/down arrow and even change the actual nummerical value with the keyboard. Software synthesizers often have the same design ethos as effect plugins, a lot of eye candy but not always easy to use. Personally I think Korg does a reasonble job at finding the balance between pretty looking and easy using. I use quite a few of their iPad apps like iM1 and iWavestation and Gadget. With Gadget the controls can sometimes be a bit finnicky with the touch screen but their wavestation app is really well done when it comes to sound editing, you can kind of manupilate the parameters like fabfilter.
    Somethimes and old windows 95 interface (like the airwindows plugins) will do just fine, as a structural engineer I often work with a program called "Technosoft Raamwerken" which still looks like a windows 95 program but it works really well and is easy and fast to use. If I look at old school daw's like Cubase on the Atari, the design was very simple but also functionally designed. The technical restrisctions of the monochrome low-res display forced the developers to think about the design in a functional way and not waste the screen real estate with eye candy.

I’m also about to do a 100 in 100 days effects pedals and plugins challenge for my new channel so could use all the vibey delays available! Any thoughts on this versus the Audiority or Valhalla?

    Part of the appeal of a realistic looking interface is it makes the user feel they could operate a real analog version of the effect if they come upon one.

    I have a few Echorec plugs to compare this to (Audiority, DDMF, Overloud etc), and this one is my favorite out of all of them. Honestly, UI preferences aside, it just sounds better. Pulsar's other plugs are fantastic sounding as well, imo.

  • @elwrongo
    @elwrongo ปีที่แล้ว

    I think this thing sounds good. There are quite a few tape delay emulaions out there but not many Echorec's and this is a good one. Pulsar have taken the time with the sound as well as the look (which is important too for a vintage gear guy like me). One thing missing is a standalone version for those who just want to plug into it. Hide half GUI is a good idea. You review should also see what the tube drive control is like on a guitar or synth signal. How many parameters are midi controllable (I would assume all but hey).

  • @Mansardian

    I get your aversion to this kind of GUI and your opinion is always respected. But...you know, the look is always part of the deal. Fabfilter didn't try to emulate something existing, they gave you the best and most versatile tools possible. So what else should their plugins look like than the way they do? Of course, even their GUI had been designed to be appealing. They could have done it like Chris from Airwindows or all those JSFX in Reaper. The reply you got via e-mail is actually pretty good (I was surprised they worked for Arturia, too). I am totally in love with Arturia's compressors and yes, the GUI is a part of the user experience.
    Look, try to see it this way:
    I love the behaviour of the dbx 165a, so I wanted a plugin that behaves the same. I wanted to walk on the same road to get to the desired sound, with all the buttons and placements of the knobs. That is part of my workflow. So why should I be forced to get used to a new interface although I know and love the old one, just because it all went digital? Sure, rust and dust and all that is pretty useless...but take it as an expression of love. It is a tribute.
    If I need an innovative EQ I grab the fabfilter and don't care how it looks. If I need the sound and workflow of a 1073, I grab a plugin of a 1073, with all the expected and desired restrictions - and I take the familiar look as a bonus because I know in a second were I am and what to set.
    That's why digitalized instruments in aircraft cockpits resemble the old look of circular instruments.
    EDIT: you MUST try Arturia's compressors!

    It's actually kinda true, this whole visual marketing point. The best tape emulation on the market is the AirWindows one, but hardly anybody knows this guy, and I am sure one of the reasons is because he literally has *no* interface, he just uses the default sliders that come from the VST GUI in the SDK. He even has some motto around this, but I can't remember it. Anyway, what I like about this vintage emulation craze in plugins is not so much whether or not they are perfect representations, but that they do have color, and you can use it for that, not like the original unit, but as a new thing altogether. Also, what is nice about plugins is that they work, contrary to a lot of vintage hardware units people have at home or in the studio, which is I am sure the reason you did not compare it to your hardware tape delay :p

    A nice idea to have a stats about the 3d use case! Another cool idea for a vst Demo, with 3D design, would be to destroy parts of it by time. Pickups fall down, knobs break, starts to steam. But you can repair it by clicking of different parts or knobs and you get working again. None knows when the demo period is over, but anytime it's. This is how you develop a relationship with the device because you kept fixing it. In the end you will buy it! This is how "games to pay for" working as well.

  • @toff1974
    @toff1974 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    ON the GUI, if you are emulating a peice of hardware, surely if you make the interface different to how the hardware looked, it would be confusing to use and then not 'authentic' to the original hardware. FabFilter doesn't emulate specific hardware so can be experimantal with their interface.. and it works a treat. I dont mind either unless it (as you also say) impacts usability. Great review.

    To think you can make a decision and not be influenced by what you're seeing seems naive to me, even if you're confident enough to trust your ears. I like setting the parameters on a plugin blind (turning of the screen, turning a linked rotary encoder without feedback), because I will often set them a lot more extreme and than when looking at the dials, just based on how exciting something sounds. Despite knowing this I cannot *not* be influenced by leaving the visual feedback on.
    I *do* like fabfilter UIs very much, and I'm not particularly into hardware emulation UIs with scratches and screws on them. I'm just disagreeing with a general statement you made during minute 4:00.

    I think you're got it the wrong way around Wyste, they make plugins to look like this because that's what the majority of people want because human beings (in general) like things to look nice and appealing. If you're a Reaper user I totally get it, looks don't matter. That's why after trying Reaper I chose Studio One, it does everything really well and... it looks nice. 😎

    How to make your own delay with a loop back connection in a vst patchbay or vst rack ? That would be cool but i cant fix this.
    Just one repeat with a standard delay, than a tape or tube emulation, a EQ and a limiter for safety.

    I like and use both analog looking plug-ins and the fab filter more 'modern digital' looking plugins. I do agree that sometimes the vintage looking ones can be annoying to turn a knob because you have to go left or right when up or down feels more intuitive on some. The waves API eqs come to mind. I do however think you are missing the point on why people including myself like those vintage style faces. Most of us probably, even though I do run a small professional studio, will never be able to afford loads of Neve, Urei or Abbey Roads gear and this allows people to somewhat buy into the history of music production and feel they can be familiar with the gear without ever owning the physical unit. From experience too, I can say that having used a plugin emulation and then using the real thing, you feel like you have a head start and know what knob is what..

  • @NoNameLeft1500

    there are two sides of guis... the thing with modern digital GUIs are they need to be designed very well in terms of functionality and information and useability and useage (workflow etc) and also aesthetics (they are often more importend then someone might think... also because aesthetics can also be kind of a guide like colorcoding differend aspects and so on) ... if the digital GUI is well designed... then they are a joy to use... however there are also some plugins.. were the design isn't very well done... and the useability becomes a struggle...
    "analog" guis on the otherhand they mught not give the functionality and informative and fast was of use like a well designed modern gui .. but are often more safe not to create a complete mess... so still beeing more or less intuitive to use...
    and I can imagine to develop and design a good modern GUI .. can be harder then design an analog GUI... the analog GUI might be more work in terms of art.. to make it nice... but in terms of thinking and use and so on... a modern GUI can be quite hard to do it right I can imagine... because it almost goes into some kind of psychological behavior analysis or so.. with what most of our brains can work best and so on...

I for one just got it and think it sounds AMAZING and for once I understand what you mean when you say something gives the sound more depth! Unlike a lot of compressor plugins you can clearly tell that it has its own vibe and sound and the way you can smash a signal with it is really cool and gives some pretty wicked results!

    What they should really do is allow a way to make 3rd party skins like in Reaper. If they don't have the time to build a second interface then make that aspect open source... it's just a few parameter sliders, it can't be that difficult to facilitate.

    • @kaitsu9608
      @kaitsu9608 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ableton sort of has it, you can set all parameters to appear inside device box and make it default. Lot of plugs are pre mapped like that too

    • @davidsynge7030
      @davidsynge7030 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kaitsu9608 that's true. I used Ableton for years and had to abandon it because of stability issues in 10 and could never go back because workflow for mixing in Reaper is so much smoother. Proves it's a fairly simple thing to translate parameters to simple sliders, though.
