Townes was a central figure in the 1970’s film “Heartworn Highways”, which also featured a brilliant man that I met as a kid, the inimitable Gamble Rogers. Townes was a singular figure in the world of the American singer/songwriter. There will never be another like him, which is actually maybe a good thing because he was just a painfully lonesome guy. He could be in a room full of people and still feel totally alone. That disconnect was reflected in many of his songs and sad…it was relatable for a lot of people. I miss Townes.
There are great structures or building blocks to anything and Townes is definitely One of In music. Thank you for the video and the knowledge. You are very beautiful I'm sure you have heard many times in your life so I'll add another! It's better than just waiting around to die.
Wow, i am not alone! I am starting my own career. Just good to see others respect Townes. Another artist i appreciate and admire is Jackson C. Frank, that poor soul
Townes said he wrote "Pancho and Lefty" about, "Two Mexican bandits I saw on the TV, two weeks after I wrote the song... Which is out there right? Well it's out there for him, out there for everybody else.". Lol Truly one of the greats!
"and as I fall and reel to my bed all that i have thought and all that ive said means nothing to me I'd soon as be dead all of the world be forgotten...." To me, Townes was at his best when it was just him and a guitar and maybe a little heroin. The best songwriter that will ever live was Townes Van Zandt.
Townes knew he wouldn't be around long because that was a self fulfilling prophecy. He may not have been able to control himself very effectively but he drank himself to death. Sad.
He was frail but powerfully distilled when he sang and played near the end of his life... I'm glad that I spent money I didn't have to hear him sing and play at Chicago Old Town School of Folk Music.
I've been listening to a lot of Townes lately, and when i do it seems to inform my guitar playing in such a way that everything I play that day sounds melancholy and deep. I'd love to write songs like his.😔✌️
townes liked to tell tall tales. I highly doubt he wrote if I needed you in a dream, I don’t know if there’s kernels of truth to the story, but he never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
Its also worth to point out that Townes suffered from depression and claimed he would get into frenzies in which he would lock himself in a closet to write songs
For something to be a premonition, doesn't it have to be somewhat unexplained? Because if you drink like a fish and do heroin for years, saying youre going to die relatively young is like saying you're going to get wet before getting in the shower.
@@gravy3858 but that reasoning can be applied to almost anything...? Its like saying that Otis Redding had a brief career but the impact in Soul music is above the earthly success he managed to received before his accident.
"A sort of desperate writing style... begging...."?? Thats almost laughable. Almost - Maybe listen a little more to the songs, instead of propagating your fatalistic fandom? Thanks.

Thank-You! Townes Van Zandt with Harry Chapin and Jim Croce are Prolific Songwriters and Storytellers! Excellent Video Oliva! ❤❤❤
I played and lived with Townes until he died. He was a true poet and friend. I miss him deeply.
Wow, thats amazing. He is my favorite songwriter. Any interesting stories you could share?

Beautifully said.
Thank you for this. I loved Townes and I always will
The best.
Found an original copy of for the sake of the song this weekend. Those first pressing are so good I don't have words for em.

He wrote several songs that came in dreams , he is my favorite songwriter ever and no one did his songs better than he did
Brilliant songwriter! 👍
Miss him....🙏🙏🙏
👍🍻🕊🇩🇪🌻
Good stuff. Thanks.
Criminally underrated, he is right up there with Dylan, Lennon/McCartney, MJK, and all of the greatest songwriters of all time.
Love you Townes.
Lungs is my favourite. One of gods special people 🙏
Mans is an absolute legend
If you like Townes Van Zandt, you should check out his friend Blaze Foley. His story is also interesting.
Second that
greatest songwriter that ever lived.
Absolutely

Agreed. Love Jackson.
I love your knowledge and your beauty x
Listen to “Live at the Old Quarter” pure genius with a troubled heart of gold 💚
❤ Townes Van Zandt.
There’s no songwriter better than Townes Van Zandt.
One of the greats!
@@ladyolivialane i agree with you 100 procent
His cover of dead flowers is my favorite version of that song ❤
A beautiful one.
He wrote dead flowers so his version is THE VERSION NOT A COVER. THE ROLLING STONES DID A GREAT COVER.
@@coyleigh not sure where you heard that but it is completely false and pretty easy information to look up. The song was written by mick and Keith
I cant remember the title but that song about the homeless couple is heartbreaking
Marie
Great one, nice taste! Live at Old Quarter is a masterpiece
Live at Mccabe's is a good one also. Abnormal is another powerful album. Slow and raw.
Thank you SO much! Long form content coming hopefully in the New Year (or sooner)!

Truly one of the greats!
My hero
The Be Good Tanyas, do such a great job of his song, Wait'n Around To Die. It's hypnotic and spell bounding.
Will definitely listen!

Amen
Waiting around to die is a great one aswell

Townes Van Zandt Heartworn Highways.
Fever dream like state sounds like top notch gear
Exactly!
😉
I think it was during heroin withdrawals in Guy Clarke’s house the fever dreams

Interesting. :-)
Willie Nelson made the statement that Pancho and Lefty was the best song ever written.
Tvz one of our best
You couldn’t have picked a better jacket for this video. Townes would’ve loved it so much he might’ve tried to borrow it.
I believe it when listening to lungs
Your beautiful
Thank you!
Waiting around to die... I have no words
Wasn’t a brief career as he was recording in 66.
Its also worth to point out that Townes suffered from depression and claimed he would get into frenzies in which he would lock himself in a closet to write songs
Yes!

Unless you were drinking and banging smack to ignore the pervasive idea that your demise was around every corner
Cool take on Townes but “brief career” is off the mark and misleading. His recording and performing career spanned almost three decades
Townes> everyone else
Forgive me for correcting you but Townes did not have a brief career.
relative to his contemporaries, yes.
@@gravy3858 but that reasoning can be applied to almost anything...? Its like saying that Otis Redding had a brief career but the impact in Soul music is above the earthly success he managed to received before his accident.

@@sgtrenegade no I totally agree, im just assuming that’s what they meant. a 30 year career is pretty long to me.
Nothin

Not so brief career
Why do you sound like ai?
Not sure!

Nah it’s not begging you to listen
I would rather watch your tik Tok...rising low jeans...and looking...like my A I girlfriend 😊
True Texas legend.
Indeed.
Townes lived the life he sang about.
And sang the life he lived about..
TVZ Best songwriter in American history
