Not everyone watching this grows the same thing. I LOVE pioppinos. I am tired of paying 60.00 for a grow kit, and getting 7 mushrooms to eat. So......I am learning from scratch, and I am finding mushroom advice on TH-cam interesting.

Your videos have been incredibly valuable to me, and I wanted to express my gratitude. I recently undertook this project in this video that I believe others might find useful as well. I purchased two totes like the ones featured and bought several cans of insulation foam. I placed one tote inside the other and filled the gap between them with the foam, letting it dry. I repeated this process with the lid. Not only did this enhance insulation, but it also significantly improved the stability of the hose and thermometer going into the lid. Thank you for the inspiration, and keep up the fantastic work!

I try to avoid as much DIY as possible and I don't like uni-taskers in the kitchen. Just get yourselves a 40qt aluminum stock pot with lid and steamer rack, about $50 at a restaurant supply. This is the perfect companion to your pressure cooker; soak/cook grain in it, pasteurize in it, ect. Even get an extra lid to drill holes in and use as a steam chamber, if you wish.

5/1/23 built this this past week...works pretty well...used a Presto 23 quart pc. Bought 1/4 inch i.d. pure silicone tubing on Amazon 10 for 10 feet. Tote 24 from Walmart. Took a good 2 1/2.hours to get up to internal temp 150- 168. Put in heavy ply garbage bag, worrying it might melt. Didnt melt. I had 2 5 gallon paint buckets 3.5 gallons each, got it to field cap, put it in trash bag and tied bag closed...kept the sliding glass door open, was worried about the smell of the plastic and poop cooking...cvg, poop, and chic manure mix. Put 5 beach towels under it on wooden floor, and wrapped the unit about 60 quart with blankets. Took two straps and tightened around the tote, some steam still escapes.put pans of water on edges to combat the steam escape. Worked pretty well...recommendations I'd make. Put a heatproof seal under lid around the rim. Maybe put a 10 or 20 lb weight on each corner. Or use a metal trashcan for the tote.all in all worked well. 2 1/2 hours to get tote to temp, then 90 minutes at 160+-. Also get some foam insulation and wrap the unit and tape it in place...thank you for all the great info and help Pgt...much appreciated 😅

Tip: If you want to mold your red rtv seal a bit better put some rubbing alcohol on your finger tip and mold the seal around the hose or thermometer. The alcohol makes it so that it doesn’t stick to your fingers at all as long as there is alcohol on it so make sure you keep dipping your finger in it so it doesn’t dry off

You can use the power pressure cooker XL you just have to unscrew the bolt and take the plastic ring off the top of the lid then you will have a portable unit! Also you can use a BBQ digital thermometer with a meat probe on a cable and just run it in through the avoiding another hole in the lid.

I might have some helpful information about the tubs. You'd probably want to get one made of polypropylene. It will have a 5, or 05. with or without hte triangle recycling symbol, and may or may not say 'pp' underneath for polypropylene. Polypropylene is very temperature resistant and you can usually consider it autoclaveable. Sometimes they will be listed as 'nylon' as a more general term but look for that number 5. (I checked your link and sure enough that tub is polypropylene!)

Great video and I appreciate what you've done here! I was still nervous when I started and it turned out to be pretty fool-proof. If you don't mind, I'd like to share my adaptations and findings from my first attempt at it. Take it as a "what I did with this information" comment.
For starters, I have never done anything remotely close to this before, so I wasn't sure what would come of it. I ended up buying a 48qt cooler for about $25 instead of using the tote. I spread the substrate out into ten one gallon freezer bags and layered them within with small wood blocks and $3 wire cooling racks I found at Walmart. Each bag was equally exposed to the air around it.
The hose I found went on to the pressure cooker hard enough that I didn't need any clamp and I drilled a small enough hole in the top of the cooler that didn't require any sealant around it. I cut the hose at an angle so that I could partially start threading it through and then pulled it in with a pliars.
I ended up using a wired probe type thermometer that I already had and just closed the lid over it. It allowed me to perfectly center the point where I was measuring the temperature and it had an alarm that sounded off when the temp reached the level that I was looking for.
Here's what happened. It seemed to take a long time to warm up and I started to think it wouldn't work. I set the alarm at 140° and cut off the heat at that point. It might have taken 90+ minutes to get there. (I didn't time it.) The temp continued to climb and eventually leveled off at 169° and stayed there for quite some time. I opened it up a few times as I worried about it getting too high and it might have.
Upon realizing that the cooler would retain the heat and that I'd never need to apply more, I went to bed and got up five hours later and it had fallen down to 127° so I removed the bags to cool them down faster. My guess is that it stayed above 140° for four hours without having to apply any additional heat. I'm quite pleased with that.
What will I do differently the next time? My only concern is the max temperature, so I'll cut the heat at about 135° the next time. It was heating up much faster at the end so something closer to 130° might be more appropriate. I'll likely fill it with some regular sand bags to experiment and see what the ultimate results are, but that's all that I'll change. The results were much better than I expected and this is really the perfect way to go for anyone wondering what method is really the easiest!!

I LOVE pioppinos. It got expensive buying grow kits, and the yield was small. We would eat them and want more, and at 60.00 a ready to grow pioppino bag...... I needed a cheaper way to go! I just ran into this TH-cam. Thanks! I have found mushroom communities on TH-cam very informative. We may grow different kinds for different reasons, but mostly, the same info applies.

for anyone who owns a cementmixer or has room to store one, there's a faster method: Fill the mixer (big one with container) with the substrate and point a propane torch (big one for burning roofing) to the centre of the hole from the container. Just a few minutes later the desired temperature will be reached. Depending from the outside temperature this method has to be repeated once or more to keep the temperature up in the following thirty minutes. This method pasteurises and mixes the substrate all at once. I've been using it for delicate tropical plants substrates for years

This is a good set-up. I have seen one of these before, and I think it is better than what I've been doing cooking/pasteurizing shit in an open pot on the stove. It is really hard to get the temp right bc the burners go up and down, on and off. And then there's the smell and the mess. I will definitely try this! Thanks.

    • @flowwizardz6695

Box fan and less than adequate filters may filter air but do not produce laminar flow. The edy currents of air can still drag in contaminants since the output is turbulent not laminar
