A friend of mine was forbidden to watch WB cartoons by his overprotective mother. He watched them anyway and somehow we all managed to resist the temptation to jump off a cliff or kill anyone so thankfully it all went well in the end. Pretty sharp for snot nosed kids, weren’t we? 🙈 🐰

Even as a little kid when I first saw such cartoons, I knew that we couldn't do such things in real life. Only with cartoonists can such things can be done right. And that's what makes these old cartoons entertaining for ALL AGES!

Law is NOT Physics. Two separate areas. The Laws of Physics refer to the universal law of gravity, and others that can't be changed by human whim, compared to legislative law. Unless you were being facetious and not to be taken seriously, which could be your idea.

    The Laws of Cartoon Physics:
    Cartoon Law I
Any body suspended in space will remain in space until made aware of its situation. Daffy Duck steps off a cliff, expecting further pastureland. He loiters in midair, soliloquizing flippantly, until he chances to look down. At this point, the familiar principle of 32 feet per second per second takes over.
    Cartoon Law II
Any body in motion will tend to remain in motion until solid matter intervenes suddenly. Whether shot from a cannon or in hot pursuit on foot, cartoon characters are so absolute in their momentum that only a telephone pole or an outsize boulder retards their forward motion absolutely. Sir Isaac Newton called this sudden termination of motion the stooge's surcease.
    Cartoon Law III
Any body passing through solid matter will leave a perforation conforming to its perimeter. Also called the silhouette of passage, this phenomenon is the specialty of victims of directed-pressure explosions and of reckless cowards who are so eager to escape that they exit directly through the wall of a house, leaving a cookie-cutout-perfect hole. The threat of skunks or matrimony often catalyzes this reaction.
    Cartoon Law IV
The time required for an object to fall twenty stories is greater than or equal to the time it takes for whoever knocked it off the ledge to spiral down twenty flights to attempt to capture it unbroken. Such an object is inevitably priceless, the attempt to capture it inevitably unsuccessful.
    Cartoon Law V
All principles of gravity are negated by fear. Psychic forces are sufficient in most bodies for a shock to propel them directly away from the earth's surface. A spooky noise or an adversary's signature sound will induce motion upward, usually to the cradle of a chandelier, a treetop, or the crest of a flagpole. The feet of a character who is running or the wheels of a speeding auto need never touch the ground, especially when in flight.
    Cartoon Law VI
As speed increases, objects can be in several places at once. This is particularly true of tooth-and-claw fights, in which a character's head may be glimpsed emerging from the cloud of altercation at several places simultaneously. This effect is common as well among bodies that are spinning or being throttled. A `wacky' character has the option of self-replication only at manic high speeds and may ricochet off walls to achieve the velocity required.
    Cartoon Law VII
Certain bodies can pass through solid walls painted to resemble tunnel entrances; others cannot. This trompe l'oeil inconsistency has baffled generations, but at least it is known that whoever paints an entrance on a wall's surface to trick an opponent will be unable to pursue him into this theoretical space. The painter is flattened against the wall when he attempts to follow into the painting. This is ultimately a problem of art, not of science.
    Cartoon Law VIII
Any violent rearrangement of feline matter is impermanent. Cartoon cats possess even more deaths than the traditional nine lives might comfortably afford. They can be decimated, spliced, splayed, accordion-pleated, spindled, or disassembled, but they cannot be destroyed. After a few moments of blinking self pity, they reinflate, elongate, snap back, or solidify. Corollary: A cat will assume the shape of its container.
    Cartoon Law IX
Everything falls faster than an anvil.
    Cartoon Law X
For every vengeance there is an equal and opposite revengeance. This is the one law of animated cartoon motion that also applies to the physical world at large. For that reason, we need the relief of watching it happen to a duck instead.
    Cartoon Law Amendment A
A sharp object will always propel a character upward. When poked (usually in the buttocks) with a sharp object (usually a pin), a character will defy gravity by shooting straight up, with great velocity.
    Cartoon Law Amendment B
The laws of object permanence are nullified for "cool" characters. Characters who are intended to be "cool" can make previously nonexistent objects appear from behind their backs at will. For instance, the Road Runner can materialize signs to express himself without speaking.
    Cartoon Law Amendment C
Explosive weapons cannot cause fatal injuries. They merely turn characters temporarily black and smoky.
    Cartoon Law Amendment D
Gravity is transmitted by slow-moving waves of large wavelengths. Their operation can be witnessed by observing the behavior of a canine suspended over a large vertical drop. Its feet will begin to fall first, causing its legs to stretch. As the wave reaches its torso, that part will begin to fall, causing the neck to stretch. As the head begins to fall, tension is released and the canine will resume its regular proportions until such time as it strikes the ground.

I've always had questions about "Who Framed Rodger Rabbit"
    - If humans and toons get in relationships does that mean there are half toon half human hybrids?
    - If so, how would that work?
    - Would it have the toon jumping 50 feet into air and landing on the human during sex in some cases?
    - would a toon human hybrid obey the laws of physics, the laws of physics in cartoons, a mix of the two or would the individual go in and out of two/all three of those?
    - What kind of problems will there be in a society like that?

I will love Snoopy, Sherman & Peabody, Tennessee Tuxedo, and Fractured Fairy Tales until I die. Rocky & Bullwinkle, the Pink Panther, the Filntstones and Jetsons, and so many others are part of my life and my world, just as movie characters and literary characters from books are. Jonny Quest will always be scary but good sci-fi adventure, I will always hope Sylvester catches that annoying little yellow bird that taunts him, and I will always want to dance in the air with Casper.

Explanation: Toon Force is the idealogy when the normal laws of our universe don't apply to the cartoony ones. Obviously. As such, users of this ability can essentially do whatever but with specific limitations. For example, a character like Bugs Bunny can breathe in space which is an example of vaccum adaptation. This is the ability to survive in the depths of space without any special equiment. Another prominent user of this ability would be Superman.

A knock on the head can produce a ring of orbiting stars or chirping birds. Lust (or fear) can make eyes either stretch from their sockets or pop out entirely for a few seconds. Love can turn them into little beating hearts.
Porky Pig always wrapped a towel around his waist when emerging from the shower but what exactly was he hiding? He walked around without pants the rest of the time making it obvious that he was missing some bits.
I can understand Fred Flintstone having a parrot inside his radio. That could work. But what animal would make his TV work? For that matter, if all those critters that were used as appliances grumbled about being made to do what they did, what stopped them from returning to the wild?

  • @MrEvilbyte

Rule #11: Coyotes are apparently immortal.
They can fall from great heights, get blown up, get slammed into cliff sides, get roadkilled by trucks and trains, struck by lightning, crushed by boulders, fired out of a cannon, impaled on a cactus, etc etc.
And that still won't stop him from trying to catch that blue bird.

Cartoons are meant not to follow the laws and physics. But some of them do. Like let’s say SpongeBob and amazing world of Gumball. SpongeBob fall to the ground making a hole of his body shape and come out alive but hurt, Gumball, darwin, and anais were blasted out high in the air from their flooded home falling in the sky fast and splat into the ground, managing to survive. Other cartoons like Regular show and Adventure time. They follow the laws and physics from dying by falling. So there at times cartoons follow the physics while some don’t.

This world is barely real, if at all, HH. Take a supposedly "solid" rock, for example. Because the distance between the nucleus of its atoms and the electron shell is roughly 100,000 times greater than the radius of the nucleus (therefore making an atom's makeup the equivalent to a golf ball in a football stadium), said rock is mostly empty space, as are we.

The Three Stooges shorts (Columbia Pictures, excellent sound department) were famous for funny effects that would not be as funny without the added stimulus of a violin 'pluck' in pulling a hair out of Larry's head, or a drum noise after Moe slugs Curly in the stomach, or an anvil noise when Moe hits Curly over the head with a (rubber) hammer. The props were made so no one would be hurt, and the exaggerated sound effect made a cover for the artificial object. #8, characters live anywhere in the universe, no matter if there is no oxygen or any air, no water, the temperature can be 200 degrees (F) or -200 degrees, etc.

Only TEN?????????????? Not a n easy thing to narrow down too Also in Japan the characters SOMETIME bleed Or another example when the script calls for it example One cowboy shoots 20 shots and all targets go down using only a six shooter Star Wars stroomtrooper aim

I'm worried about you, Fred. It's okay to talk about quantum physics, atomic physics, astrophysics, geophysics, or any of the various other branches of physics. Except this one. You have Transgressed the Unwritten Law. You have broken the Wall of Silence that They(tm) have erected around this Forbidden Topic, not taught in any university. I applaud your courage, but hope you are transmitting from a secure location.

Thanks Fred.. That's what I loved about Looney Tunes cartoons as a kid, the physics of falling, jumping, crashing, exploding and the music and sound effects that made it seem real. The Three Stooges were the ones who had to worry, cause that stuff they did, even though they were sight gags, looked real and people tried doing that to each other. How many E.R. visits do we have on record from Stooge gags gone wrong????? How about a "Do Not Try This At Home" Stooge video, Fred. Thanks again Fred for making us laugh and keeping it real. Rabbit season Duck season never gets old.

The host of our local TV kids' show that featured Stooges films ("The Great MacNutt" on WDSU in New Orleans) had to regularly give warnings to the kids in the audience not to try this stuff at home.
