2 Questions: 1. When I focus on my breath, my brain tries to create a "image" out of it. And because theres no image to formulate, my brain creates one, which triggers thought.....taking me away from the present moment.... When you are focusing on the breath, what EXACTLY about the breath are you focusing on?..... 2. Its very easy to think about breathing WHILST thinking about OTHER things. So how do you single out "just breathing" I find when I redirect back to breathing. all it does is just add another layer onto what I was already thinking about 😐 anybody else like this?
Hey Zack. I've been meditating consistently for the last 7 months. I'd like to help you by answering your questions. For #1, the goal is to focus on the *sensation* of breathing. In the book "The Mind Illumitated", the authors recommend focusing on the breath-related sensations in your nose. For example, the temperature of the air, the speed of the breath, etc. For #2, you are not trying to "think" about breathing. You are trying to focus on the raw sensation of breathing. Thoughts will steal your attention many times. When you notice this, you might say to yourself "oh wait, I'm supposed to be focused on my breathing". That's technically a thought, but this thought can guide you back to the raw sensation. As you practice, you'll be able to focus on your breath and notice thoughts *at the same time*. In the book I mentioned, they call this "background awareness". By the way, I write about how to start meditating on twitter/x to help people build a consistent meditation habit. I don't know friend. For me, when I try to meditate, I literally have 0 thoughts running through my head.
Same thing for me, although I just started maybe that’s why 🤔
