OKEY im 12 my older brother got me into the white stripes , raconteurs but then i started really listening to how jack played guitar and it was so unique that no one could do it the same way i started playing guitar about 7 months ago jack white inspired me so much that i progressed extremely fast everyday i practice for hours but what really makes me sad is that no one listens to blues and rock . all people want to listen to is techno ,rap , hiphop . jack is awesome
I feel like this is America's song. A folk song with an origin no one knows for sure, adapted and retold again and again by countless artists, each of which puts their unique spin on it.
The guitar in the picture looks like an Airline 59 Custom 2P, a take-off of the National Res-o-Glas "map" guitars of the 1960's. Eastwood Guitars carries them for $999....check out their site.
@guesswhosinahurry It is an old folk song that was past from generation to generation until it was recorded in 1933 by Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster, ten years before Leadbelly recorded it. Clarence Ashley heard it from his grandfather.
The oldest known existing recording is by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it for Vocalion Records in 1934.[2] Ashley said he had learned it from his grandfather, Enoch Ashley.
This might be from their Indianapolis show in 2005 right after Katrina at the Murat Theater. I was there and "acquired" my own personal audio copy. I'll have to review my archives to be sure. Great stuff nonetheless, and historically significant.
I think that this is just good! Jack nailed it! I do not understand people complaining. Why? Jack delivered a nice unpolished interpretation! Rough on edges but good. Emotion, attitude and interpretation was there!
this is a blues song but with the white stripes own personal style put into it. The sound quality is honestly fantastic for a bootleg like this and jake white did a nice job with the song
It kills me to see people arguing, saying Jack White is talentless, or that he is shit. I agree that everybody should be able to speak their opinions though. If you are saying that "people are allowed to have different opinions, now leave", that is stupid as well. This is a great version, and even though I think everything they do is gold, I also feel like if this were the 1st White Stripes song I heard, I would enjoy it. The comments are for this reason, letting people give opinions. Thank you.
i rate Jack as probably the best musician of our time (top 10 for sure) but i am calling him out for this! he doesn't even get the words in the right order! (i know he has changed some lyrics but they don't make sense)
+David Dančuk I am, due to the fact that it is not good. If something is badly done, just because it's done by a genius doesn't mean it is automatically good. If you are going to touch a classic song then you better be damn sure that you'll do it justice.
+Christer Sebastian Thomassen yes, I am aware of that. And changing the words is not the problem I have. The words he has changed it too don't even make sense though. And it is terribly sung.
Thank you Jack and Meg for keeping the blues alive. Hmmm... Maybe I should nominate you for the KBA Award in Memphis! I'm an affiliate; I can vote!! ;-)
This song was brought to prominence in the Greenwich Village coffee houses in the early 60's by legendary folkie Dave Van Ronk, where it was heard by Bob Dylan. Dylan recorded it before Van Ronk got a chance to, as related in his book "Chronicles", and that recording was the source of its modern popularity -- mainly through the "cover" by The Animals. Yes, it's an old, old song -- and has been sung by some of the greatest. Including the White Stripes.
It was written probably before lead belly was even born, the version it is believed he learnt it from was a version sung by a young woman called Georgia Turner that this guy recorded and played to a load of people
@elliotrees thats why everyone credit The Animals with it, Bob Dylan was before them and before him was the guy who actually wrote-who's name i always forget
@mis4tuneband actually, he plays often with cheap plastic guitars too, or ones with bent necks or slightly out of tune to make it more difficult or give a different sound. yeah, sure he has nice expensive guitars and amps and pedals, but so do most guitar players in that genre of music.
@Jefflebowski95 yes of course its a traditional folk song made popular by Baez and Dylans their versions which of course being the influence of The animals version in '64. Without Dylan's the song would probably remain unknown?? What version do YOU think influenced this White Stripes version - I'd like to hear it..cheers
I love the White Stripes Too,but I don't know if it's just the sound of this live or the video, but not his best work.He definately has the voice for this song.I wish it was better sound
@xvanb Me neither...once they were playing in Deer Lake Park just outside of my city, Vancouver. I stood on a powerbox and could just see them...I didn't have money for tickets :(
@yargnodrog thats the great thing about America, everybodys entitled to their opinion. This song BLOWS,but alot of his other stuff ROCKS!! What do you know about Jack White,do you have his whole discography, does he play too loud?Because if it's too loud your............
@serenatruthonearth lead belly is believed to have the earliest known recording, but he didnt right it. its an old tarditional song dating back to the late 1800s
@Insomnimanic805 In "It might get loud" he says if you dont have a problem make one up becuase you need that energy and anger and sorrow and all the emotion it makes you feel to make good music
He plays and sings it with his own style, I approve it.
I'm just enjoying the epicness of THIS BAND playing THIS SONG. In-freaking-credible!
Absolutely...he embodies what a true artist is, not those who seek recognition but whom through their craft express their beautiful inner being...
I love this cover. The intensity does Dylan's version justice.
Jacks passion while performing this,
this is what defines awesome music
one of my favorite songs done by my favorite artist. amazing
Song is sung like it should be!!!! Yea, with feeeling! This dude is for real!!! Love this duo !!!
He put his own feeling into this! Great version! Jack white never upsets me
Graphic Creator totally agreed

one of the best versions of the song i've ever heard
Wooooow. Meg is the rockstar of this universe. ❤❤❤❤❤ She is just the best of the best.
it is great cover.. for me very emotional and original ! I´ve never had enough of this version ..
Imagine the feelings that went into belting that out...Amazing.
Thank you so much!
I don't feel so alone, anymore...
They bring it every time, every song, every show!!
I saw them live in Providence, RI. Fan-freakin-tastic.....they rocked, Med & Jack. One of the best shows I ever saw live....
Musical technique is nothing compared to the talent, he put all his soul into this music and the Jolene cover!
It's an old folk song that came out of the South. These types of songs were passed around for generations before they were ever written.
Jack White is a living legend. He has earned the privilege to cover anything he damn well pleases.
OKEY im 12 my older brother got me into the white stripes , raconteurs but then i started really listening to how jack played guitar and it was so unique that no one could do it the same way i started playing guitar about 7 months ago jack white inspired me so much that i progressed extremely fast everyday i practice for hours but what really makes me sad is that no one listens to blues and rock . all people want to listen to is techno ,rap , hiphop . jack is awesome
he sang the bob dylan version
They have more than one cover. I like jack but he does sound drunk here.. no worries probably sounds better than most sober .. lol
@@malikastaleyconorbuckleyho8526 lol
This makes me love the song even more now.. -3

I agree w/ david181993, this song has had so many redo's that who knows where it started?!
I love it no matter what.
@guesswhosinahurry It is an old folk song that was past from generation to generation until it was recorded in 1933 by Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster, ten years before Leadbelly recorded it. Clarence Ashley heard it from his grandfather.
i get why it has dislikes. but this is passion, and thats why i love music. if you want studio perfection thats fine, but i like this
Jack White is the real deal. Love em, he spins gold out of tin; and a cool guy to boot. Bless ya Mr White.
Favorite song done by my favorite band you can't ask for more
Jack's voice amazingly fits for this song.
those white stripes have impeccable taste.
I love it.
HOW CAN IVE NOT HAVE HEARD THIS BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF MUSIC BEFORE
i like how he combines some of the original song and some from lead bellys version
oh my LORD.. that's AWESOME that they do this song.. do you have the album version?
i actually like this. just me?
This is the first song I learned to play. Its so fun to play.
this is craazy. thank you soo much for putting this on.
I love this so much.
Maybe a little rough, but I still liked it. The passion and soul was there.
Eric burdon is definetely the BEST singer in this song.. so uch passion in his voice!!!!!
okayyyy i just died. JACK I FREAKING LOVE YOU TO NO FREAKING END
Love it
jack is a rock, a blues and rock man, never compramising
The oldest known existing recording is by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it for Vocalion Records in 1934.[2] Ashley said he had learned it from his grandfather, Enoch Ashley.
i love it

It’s raw...sounds good
i get the chills when i hear this shit. effin rocks.reminds me of hendrix and jimmi page
So many bands have covered this song. There's no "real way" to play it in my opinion. To me it's an expression of emotion, pure art.
I shall go listen to it.
Nirvana and the doors should have done this too
Not unlike Nirvana's version of My Girl by Leadbelly. Not Jack's best but still in the tradition of The Blues
The Doors did
I feel like it would be amazing to also hear like a serious version done by the beatles instead of the one they did as a joke
I think that this is just good! Jack nailed it! I do not understand people complaining. Why? Jack delivered a nice unpolished interpretation! Rough on edges but good. Emotion, attitude and interpretation was there!
I Agree Jodi,amazing version
this is a blues song but with the white stripes own personal style put into it. The sound quality is honestly fantastic for a bootleg like this and jake white did a nice job with the song

Great Cover
From The Legendary WHITE STRIPES!
i think its amazing
i rate Jack as probably the best musician of our time (top 10 for sure) but i am calling him out for this! he doesn't even get the words in the right order! (i know he has changed some lyrics but they don't make sense)
You're calling him out lol? Who do you think you are buddy xD
+David Dančuk I am, due to the fact that it is not good. If something is badly done, just because it's done by a genius doesn't mean it is automatically good. If you are going to touch a classic song then you better be damn sure that you'll do it justice.
Nathan Wallace I get you man, it's just the phrase "calling him out" that was funny to me - like a medieval duel or something xD
+Nathan Wallace it's an old american folk song from early 1900's so everyone has covered has changed the lyrics.
+Christer Sebastian Thomassen yes, I am aware of that. And changing the words is not the problem I have. The words he has changed it too don't even make sense though. And it is terribly sung.
TAL CUAL!!! DE ACUERDO CON LO QUE DECIS, EN ESTOS AÑOS VIVEN SOLO DEL PASADO Y NO APRESIAN ESTOS TESOROS DE ARTISTAS QUE HAY MUY POCOS HOY EN DIA..
i like it.
he sings from the heart. and hes not a 100% on key singer thats why hes awesome
Imagine how much more pleasurable this would be if it had video.
He can sing... It's his punk roots... It's punk blues... He can sing, but the best way to show the emotions is to shout.
doesn't matter if it's blues or not, cause they only genre the white stripes are playing is fucking goddamn awesome
EXACTLY!! ME TOO!!
love the ws
Well said.
I really like it. Thanks for the recommendation!
amazing how 218 people can dislike this cover... it's great.
Thank you Jack and Meg for keeping the blues alive.
Hmmm... Maybe I should nominate you for the KBA Award in Memphis! I'm an affiliate; I can vote!! ;-)
part of the beauty of this song is that the artist/s that originally sang it are unknown.
This song was brought to prominence in the Greenwich Village coffee houses in the early 60's by legendary folkie Dave Van Ronk, where it was heard by Bob Dylan. Yes, it's an old, old song -- and has been sung by some of the greatest. Including the White Stripes.
the reason this isn't as good as some people would expect is because this is probably improvised. That's what the Stripes were about: spontaneity.
no one like the animals cover, but this sounds really great, I love Jack's voice
Same
It was written probably before lead belly was even born, the version it is believed he learnt it from was a version sung by a young woman called Georgia Turner that this guy recorded and played to a load of people
You can feel the emotion in this. He's obviously not as talented a singer as the original, but I like the grit.
Agreed!
I actually think this is awesome. Is there ANYONE out there who agrees? After all, it's probably completely improvised.
well done jack white, a brilliant cover
I LOVE THE STRIPES...This Ain't sooooo GOOD but DayuM....most of wat Jack touches is GOLD!
All you moaning ninnies .... this is an interpretation ! Artists do this. It's fine.
Sounding like a drunk moron and pissing on a legendary song isn't 'interpretation'
Jim Morrison often sounded like a drunk moron and he's IS a legend.
wisely spoken, even though most of the time he even was a drunk moron. But that doesnt matter i think :D
David PewPew You mean Jim right?
Leadbelly Circa 1930's is the earliest I know of.
I love the White Stripes Too,but I don't know if it's just the sound of this live or the video, but not his best work.He definately has the voice for this song.I wish it was better sound
Awesome :D
Esta cancion es de Leadbelly , gracias por subir esto .
@xvanb Me neither...once they were playing in Deer Lake Park just outside of my city, Vancouver. I stood on a powerbox and could just see them...I didn't have money for tickets :(
@johnnystulic42 which was a cover of the version of Dave van Ronk :)..
@yargnodrog thats the great thing about America, everybodys entitled to their opinion. This song BLOWS,but alot of his other stuff ROCKS!! What do you know about Jack White,do you have his whole discography, does he play too loud?Because if it's too loud your............
@serenatruthonearth thank you his name always slips out of my mind despite his influence on music
@serenatruthonearth lead belly is believed to have the earliest known recording, but he didnt right it. its an old tarditional song dating back to the late 1800s
@Insomnimanic805 In "It might get loud"
he says if you dont have a problem make one up becuase you need that energy and anger and sorrow and all the emotion it makes you feel to make good music
gotta agree with ya there
distorsion at it best!
Jack White is a legend and a fucking genius
WOW
si Jack White hubiese tenido 25 años en los 70's seria tan grande como Hendrix
Bob Dylan was the composer for the song "One More Cup of Coffee (valley Below)
