    The female lead died after the first act of the novel Psycho. It's not true that Hitchcock came up with that idea. Robert Bloch wrote it that way.

      Yes, the film Psycho is remarkably faithfull to the book.

      The point is Hitchcock chose one of the biggest stars in Hollywood for that role rather than an up and coming actress. You'll struggle to find a film where Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock, Scarlett Johansen, Gal Gadot, Jennifer Lawrence or whoever is killed off halfway through.

      @@hughgurney8686 I think the closest you could come is Drew Barrymore in Scream. Which potentially is also a meta take on Psycho itself.

      Good point. I never saw Scream but I think she had billing on it. And even then I'm not sure she was any more than an reclamation project almost 15years on from E.T. I really can't remember if she was significant in the preceding years of the 90s

    The film’s inconsistency, direction & writing is unfocused, however the film’s well casted, well acted, stylish & is an intriguing biopic. (64%) (3/5 stars) (mixed to positive)

    I haven't seen the film and thus don't want to judge but the TV piece was excellent as a piece of television even if not as an impression of Hitchcock by Jones

    So a tangent, but saying that the only connection Ed Gein had to Psycho was the boy-next-door killer element is just flat wrong. Ed Gein also had an extremely toxic love/hate relationship with his overbearing, abusive, ultra religious mother who died in the house he continued to live in. A lot of people also believe Gein was schizophrenic, or at least he demonstrated probably even more apparent mental instability than the Norman Bates character. At first sight the two are very different but a great deal of the parental abuse and religious psychopathy of Gein's mother was passed down to his fractured personality that ultimately fueled his urges, just like the killer from Psycho.

    Totally agree with everything Mark says about this movie. The book on which it is apparently based is so much more that this film. If you want the real story about the making of Psycho, stick to the book. I was left feeling very disappointed by this lightweight & often hammy film. "The Girl" & Toby Jones are so much better, if the movie is a little onesided in it's argument. !!!

    I have to confess I was genuinely disappointed by this film - it didn't convey the importance of Psycho as a film, the construction of the shower scene and Bernard Herrmann's score seemed utterly arbitrary and the movie floundered around with a romantic subplot that wasn't interesting. In the end, one could be forgiven for thinking it was a film about a portly bloke who directed a film with a murder in it!

    I found Hopkins' performance really bland. He had the physical mannerisms for the most part, but the voice was... just him with a slight drawl. Nothing like Hitchcock's voice. I agree with you (from 10 years ago) that the performance was more a pantomime than a masterclass like Hopkins usually has. I swear it has to be down to the director, as I think a more capable director would have been able to get the killer performance Hopkins should have had. He's a master of the craft, but this movie is not a good example of that.
    The movie itself was truly bland.

    You cant kill the leading lady off at 30 minutes. because if you do then she is not a leading lady. Duh. Cmon, Hitchcock, lets try making sense.

    I don't think "the boy next door" is the only relation Norman Bates has to Ed Gein. For instance both had an overbearing mother figure which they kept the corpses of, both dressed in women's clothes, both quite shy and effeminate. They seem pretty similar to me.

    Very disappointed by this movie. Hated the Alma subplot. Enjoyed The Girl more.
    Would still love to see a movie that is only about the making of Psycho.

    Agree its nice! I sat at the back a the cinema. Every1 sat very still throughout and as it ended the silence in the room and the sullen dragging of feet to the exit doors of the audience displayed the incredulous acquiescence that the cohesion of your reverence for Hitchcock prior to the film and the conscientiousness of the film has left your opinions stranded in the bright coloured, soft and almost whimsicle setting and movement of the film. Watch Pyscho to recalibrate and then The Girl.

    the girl or at least the trailer just seems to make out hitchcock to be a sexual predator does kemode really think hitchcock was a sexual predator or is he just saying this because adoration of toby jone, this seems a lot closer to hitchcock public image rather than accusations made by one actress

    That's because of all the people that claim to love Hitchcock, at least half of them are lying and just trying to sound cool.
    I can understand if you were around at the time and hadn't seen anything like it before. But when I hear people from the modern generation talk about him as their favourite filmmaker I just think *cough* pretentious tosser *cough*

    • @robgray1999
      @robgray1999 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That's like saying young people aren't allowed to like The Beatles... You can be of the younger generation and genuinely rate Hitchcock's work highly without being pretentious, he just really did make very good films

    • @robgray1999
      @robgray1999 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WalesintheMovies I agree that the time in which you were born will have a huge effect on how you react to things like films because of what else was available at the time, but a good film is a good film no matter when you were born. For example, Psycho wouldn't make general audiences scream today (maybe some children), but it can be watched, enjoyed and appreciated for being a very well crafted film in all respects without being pretentious for enjoying it
