Snowboarding's Most Intense Competition Yet | Red Bull Heavy Metal 2023

- Returning after last year’s contest revival, Red Bull Heavy Metal saw Detroit’s iconic Hart Plaza transformed into a street snowboarding arena unlike any other. Over 40 of the world’s top rail riders descended upon the city to take turns in the day-long rail jam that took place across three designated zones, each feature heavier than the next.
First up: The Wall, a 20 ft slab of concrete that played host to those looking to send it to the top. Next, The Kink Rail, the contest’s most technical section featuring a flat down kink rail descending a steep set of stairs, wedged between the walls of Hart Plaza. Riders ended at The Down Rail, a 50 ft down rail straight into the depths of Hart Plaza amphitheater, where things got heavy and riders put it all on the line for the contest finale.

Redbull, please please make helmets mandatory. I'll be and MD in a few week and as an action sports athlete, I've bumped my noggin a time or two (inculding some things that required brain surgery) - all with a helmet. We really shouldn't make it look cool to not wear a helmet. ALSO, dope video; these guys are super talented and fun to watch :]

This was actually the last attempt of the night at the very end of the competition. He was already "leading" in landed tricks but he wanted to throw out something crazy to secure the 3rd event. Crowd went crazy just over the attempt still👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾

As a ex-skateboarder, thinking, in general, about having your board strapped to your feet sounds like a breeze. In skateboarding, having your board stay perfectly under your feet, or return back under your feet, is 85% the battle. Although, in reality, I can fakie big flip a hefty 10 set but strap me into a snowboard and I struggle to stand in place or slowly ride down a small incline. I guess its all what youre use to.

It's beyond stupid. I guess this is just normal Detroit stuff - brains had left this place only idiots reimained there. Organizers could had really easily remedied all issues by simply placing something flat on top of stairs and could had asked participants to wear helmets. Not necessary for the sake of safety of participants them selves - these idiots probably lost a point in life where they could had learned something - but for the sake of audience especially younger audience who will be watching this and copying it - do you really want kids to attempt this stuff on their nearest stairs set and get lifelong brain damage?

Maybe next time Red bull will actually promote the event and more then 30 people will show up. It's also funny that we haven't gotten more then like 10in of snow all year in the D yet this is the city red bull decided to hold the event in.

I love to see these different snow events, but man I do wish they would make the athletes wear helmets if they wanna compete. That's both for themselves and the new generation watching them. Like imagine if someone died or something due to a head injury in the middle of the event?? Idk, seems not worth when you consider how much they know they are gonna be falling and taking some big hits

This was my first snowboard competition that I ever went to. It was so sick!!! And in my home state!!!
Event looked absolutely nuts, but my god this editing was bad. The constant song drop outs / changes mixed with random 1 liners made it so damn distracting... seriously took away from what could have been an amazing edit

I just started out, and the 3th time I went to my local dome in the Netherlands, a couple of Redbull athletes were practising there, including Zeb... Dude did some real gnarly tricks. This was the session just before Grace Warner got her Redbull helmet. I got so lucky to meet and see these people

Usually get snow from rinks or they pay a local ski hill to make some for them into rented dump truck and bring it to event. How they did events in LA back in day.

I have no idea how red bull and sponsors don’t make their riders wear helmets. If you can’t do it without a helmet you shouldn’t be doing it and if you care that much about how you look then do modeling. It sets a horrible example for less experienced riders, thinking it is not cool to wear a helmet. Brain dead-TBI’s are no joke. Super sick comp though, green robbed.
I will never in my life understand the appeal to do tricks on stairs. Let alone without protective gear. These things can be dangerous enough without even attempting to do anything stupid on them. And as an organizer of this whole ordeal - why the heck not to cover stairs with something flat? Not necessary for the safety of the participants - these already lost a point in life where safety could been teached to them but for the sake of audience especially among young audience who is watching this and learning - seeing stairs covered with padded cover is enough to send a message that one needs to consider ones safety when attempting to do tricks. On top of that not-wearing a helmet among participants in events that draw so much crowd should really be made punishable - if you do it on your own then please act as you feel - but when you do this in front of audience - show some respect to others who didn't came to potentially be a witness to event of ones brain getting split open when you hit your head into corner of that stair.

@@Messypinkman i've seen ppl do this with protective gear and when there is a lot snow thus that adds padding. This is not a lot of snow. Thus you should add something on stairs to prevent getting your ribs or skull broken for no good reason.
