  • Lower Decks returns to form in this tale of diplomacy gone inconvenient, smuggling, tiny Lt. Comm. Datas, parties, and fully-functional models. Not related to Data. Whew.

The fact that people can make fully functional model Starfleet ships probably explains why nobody was impressed with Picard's hobby of building ships in bottles.

I'd like to think that Picard was elitist in that regard because he actually took the time to make them in bottles and not all this Tamiya/Gunpla nonsense.

I loved the speech Freeman gave to the bouncer, even though she and her senior officers weren't able to get into the party.
"Our ship might not be the biggest, and we might do the missions nobody else wants, but we are still Starfleet. My crew deals with just as much shit as Picard's or any other. We might be California-class, but we are the best at what we do. I'm Captain Carol Freeman, this is my crew, and YOU are letting us into that party!"

Richard Kind was perfect for this episode, Star Trek is always great when casting comedic actors as one offs.

This was a pretty neat episode. Some of Mariner's action scenes were a bit out there, but still not too bad. Tendi and Rutherford's plot was just precious!

I have this weird suspicion that, when conceiving of Doopler the art department thought: "What if Jay Sherman was a neurotic alien diplomat?" And then the casting director saw the guy and went: "Is Jon Lovitz up for a cameo? No... Well Richard Kind is game for anything."
I can't be the only person who looks at that alien and thinks of The Critic, can I?

Marinner and Boilmer's friendship changes so much throughout the show. Season 1 Marinner needs to be the alpha and seems dead set on Boilmer being her toady. Then season 2 she constantly gets upset at him for not having her be first. Finally they readjust in season 3 after Boiler's records help clear her mother and she starts treating him as an equal. This feels so natural, much more than any relationship in DIS and PIC where they're adversaries one moment then best friends the next and vice-versa.

I really like this episode! This feels like the one where the show really found itself. The lower deckers and the command crew start to realize they have more in common than they thought and like to hang out with eacu other during their off hours

I wasnt too hot on this one initially also because it seemed to have a bit of a regressive storytelling/presentation very similar to the first half of season 1. Overtime though I came around to it.
Fortunately I believe its starting with the next episode where the season and show would either stay on a consistent path of quality or rise in quality.

Wasn't Okana the DJ at the end of this episode? Also another odd reference, the multi eyed horned headed alien when the doopler shows up in the party was what Saru was intended to look like on Discovery. Thankfully that was toned down.

There's something messed up about the fact that the only times that Mariner is tolerable is when she gets called out over her bullshit behavior. (I know that that is what makes her "fun", since this is still a comedy, but still...)
Sure Boimler was kind of rude by leaving the Cerritos without even talking with his friends
something that he at least apologized for but is kind of understandable because of all the abuse Mariner puts him through (both emotional and physical)
