  • Max Verstappen was met with boos from F1 fans after his victory at the Miami Grand Prix, but this isn't the first time and it won't be the last. We have seen F1 fans boo drivers many times before, but what happens when the line is crossed and fans start to yell abuse at drivers, mechanics and other F1 fans? Enjoy!

I attended Silverstone 2022 and sat in a grand stand full of Lewis fans. They were treating Max the exact same way, and what surprised me most was it was mostly middle-aged men who were booing and chanting horrid things at him. Most of the younger fans were very respectful. I believe the problem is that people seperate themselves from sportsmen because they feel untouchable. "Max is never going to see it because he's a multimillionaire living in Monaco and I'm just a random guy" mentality. I think one example being Bradley Philpot's Max Verstappen Discord incident shows that these guys genuinely do see the hate and on some level it will always impact them - be it in any way at all.

It’s just fans being fans. Lacan, Durkheim, Jung and I’m certain that many others also have written on this subject. Jung for example, says this is the equivalent to a “safe space” for people’s “shadow self” to come out in an appropriate moment. I won’t bore you with the details about psychology and sociology but, at least as far back as the ancient Greeks, do we have philosophers explaining the importance of the “spectacle” to manage the grievances and dark desires of the general public.
Condemning this type of behavior, is nothing but a pointless exercise of virtue signaling. It’s a normal behavior, and according to most sociologists and behavior psychologists, it’s one of the best and safest ways for people to let out built in aggression. Cheers!

Although it’s nice having a race here, their original idea for the track was much better, the event is just a shit show and I wouldn’t mind if was removed. I don't think its fair to say its just a Miami or US thing, there are still plenty of people here that love good racing as well as unsavory people abroad. But the problem with the Miami GP itself is it wants to exist more as a weekend getaway with a car race at the end instead of a proper GP weekend. Because of Nascar and the overall history of racing in the states, the sport definitely has more of a blue collar reputation that F1 does not want to cater to. The average fans at a stock car or indy race are super passionate about the sport in my experience but we have been completely priced out of the Miami GP so it attracts a lot of more wealthy types who tend to be casual fans or just there for clout as you said. In my opinion, a major factor with these troubled fans is it also depends on how they are introduced to the sport. For example, old fans like myself watch F1 for the first time in 2004 when I was a little kid. What I enjoy watching is the racing, I don't take sides, and nobody told me that I need to choose a side, just purely enjoying racing.
Compared to today where media would often antagonize a certain driver for clicks or conversely, championing a certain driver, it would certainly affect these troubled fans behave. They act like it is only FAIR if their team won, or have their FAIR share of winning. Nothing is ever fair in F1, it is part of the sport. We are here to enjoy a race, not to see our favorite drivers win. If people are out there harassing drivers just because the drivers did their job, then these people should not be part of F1.

At the start of the season I felt annoyed that Red Bull were running away with it again. But then I started watching other forms of motorsport, like IndyCar and the WRC, where the drivers can make the difference more. Now when I watch F1, I can appreciate the feat of engineering and the team Red Bull have assembled. Seeing the car blast past Aston Martins and Ferraris and brake like they've hit a brick wall suddenly becomes cool to watch, because the racing itch has been scratched by the series I mentioned above.

I remember Sky's reporting leading up to the 2021 Dutch GP. And how they basically pleaded to the Dutch fans not to boo Lewis. And some fans _did_ boo Lewis. It's a given with tens of thousands of people present cheering on his rival. However, those fans were a tiny minority and were very quickly drowned out by the cheers of the rest. Where was that outrage a month and a half earlier? When Max was met with an absolute orchestra of boos at the British GP, clearly audible on live TV? And he didn't even make the podium during the main race.
How can they expect fan behaviour to improve, when some fans are held to a different standard by the official broadcaster?

I went to the GP of Austria in 2017, but there the fans of Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes and all the other teams were mixed up. No fighting or booing during or after the race. everyone just clapped for all drivers and then a beer was enjoyed together. After the 2021 season where Max had the mega crash at Silverstone, everything has changed a lot in my opinion. especially since images then surfaced of Lewis fans clapping loudly and cheering for the crash.
At the Dutch GP that year they had a cheer audio ready when Lewis spoke, but that was not necessary. Certainly the last race in Abu Dhabi has not been helped by the smear campaign from Mercedes, TV journalists and fans. even now they want to reverse that title, in my opinion, drive to survive doesn't really help either.
Everything was blown up even more. I'm Dutch and I'm definitely a Verstappen fan, but I'm definitely a fan of the entire F1 world.
The current fans no longer resemble real F1 fans like in the time of Schumacher, Senna, Hakkinen and Vettel but rather football hooligans!

What happened with him was big news at the time or whenever he called out that he was being racially abused weekly, but over time his story has been swept u der the rug. Its good to see stories like these 2 are still in people's minds and being shared, its important we dont forget them, but try and use them as agents of change so this sort of stuff doesn't happen again, as it seems to be starting in F1. I remember my dad telling me about his experience at the 1999 Hungarian GP when Schumacher and Hakkinen were battling it out. The grandstand he was sitting in had both Schumi and Mika supporters, with him supporting the latter. In the end, Hakkinen ended up winning, and the fans got up, shook hands, and congratulated each other, no booing, no hateful behavior, no football-style hooliganism, just pure class; a bunch of people being there to enjoy the race and support their favourite driver. I think since F1 has become more accessible to the masses, which is not necessarily a bad thing, the classiness has vanished, and fans are becoming more and more toxic, having observed this when I attended the Monza race last year. I really don't like the direction this sport is heading towards... maybe elitism has its role in some places, maybe F1 isn't for everyone, because nowadays it lacks the class and glamour it used to have, it has been americanized in the worst way possible and just feels like a continuous cash grab; but in the end, cash is king.

We saw this with Vettel in 2013, even at Silverstone (despite certain people claiming British fans never boo) and with Rosberg in 2016 and Schumacher in 2002 - although those two cases were down to specific behaviour on track and fairly isolated examples. The difference these days is the media; Sky F1, for example, endlessly speculating and accusing for engagement, and exaggerating whenever they interview team personnel or drivers. It's not really surprising the level of entitlement from some fans considering they were used to winning year after year.
