Just a quick heads up for anyone interested in the Katadyn be free. You can use the Hydrapak Seeker collapsible water bags in conjunction with the filter. So you don’t have to worry too much about the Katadyn filter bag.

Just my experience I had the befree fail on me within two days but I could have gotten a dud , so I went with the platypus quick draw and love it’s versatility and ease of cleaning. One major plus with me on the QuickDraw is you can check the integrity of the filter.

I've been a BeFree fan and user for a little over 2 years now. I just had to replace my filter a couple months ago when the flow rate dropped to almost nothing. I think that's pretty amazing. I love just about everything about it.
I just purchased the Platypus Quickdraw to test out. It does have a little slower flow rate, but the reason for looking at that one is for thru hike purposes. Convenient to have something that can attach to nearly any bottle mouth whereas the BeFree can't. I've never had my bag bust in the over 2 years I've had it, but if it did, I'd be screwed til I can order and get a new one. When you're on a shorter trip, no big deal, I carry tabs to clean my water just in case, but when out for months it's definitely not an ideal situation.

just a tip with the befree, carry a second bag. It can be used for extra storage of water on long sections and doubles as a backup if the bag gets a hole in. I don't own the beefree btw, just a thought I hear people complain about the non standard thread.

@@nedsled2994 You shouldn't mix fresh water and dirt water bags, though. So it isn't as convenient as it sounds. Also using both actively means there's a higher chance of both breaking at about the same time.

I’m wondering if you had the 1 liter BeFree compared to the 1 liter QuickDraw they would both have the same capacity. Which would clog faster and which is easier to unclog. That would be the most useful data to be able to compare the two.

  • @DannyMacDJ

I think the platypus quick drawer wins because you can clip a Carabiner clip onto the bag loop with some paracord and lower it down to the water source if you can not get down to it due to a steep embankment

I've used a few Sawyer filters before switching to the Katadyn BeFree. Loved the increase flow rate with the BeFree for about three trips and then it stopped filtering even after multiple cleanings. My guess is that I have a "lemon" BeFree filter, however I was very disappointed. I'll be trying the Platypus this year... Thanks for the comparison.

Be Free- Be Garbage- yes I owned one and was let down after 50-60 refills the membrane's inside filter really separated and drops were coming out. I followed directions to clean it and still not a lot of water coming out. Filter was compromised very early on.
Ordered the Platapus and took on a long trip and I could depend on this all the way. Its a good quality filter and I give it 10 our of 10.
No I am not being sponsored.....just know a good filter when I use it based on all my backcountry adventures. Don't buy Be Free unless you are willing to be ripped off

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

I will in an up coming video. These are much lighter, cheaper, and process more water before needing a filter swap. But the Grayl series of filters is tougher, can filter all forms of bacteria, protozoa, plus viruses that these do not so they are good worldwide. And they can handle a few freezes where if these filters get frozen even once below 32°F there trash.

Do either of these seal up good with the Source UTA refill attachment?
I currently fill my 3L Source bladders with a Geopress, but its kinda heavy, gravity fed and slow or unable to completely fill if there's pack pressure on the bladder, and its bulky overall.
The Geopress is excellent as a stand-alone filter/container for packing or travel to sketch places (plus it has virus coverage), but it's clumbsy to access and use on the move compared to a hose, and isn't the best partner for a bladder *if* the UTA is factored in.
(However the Geopress is an excellent match for quick filling other bladder brands without in-line hose fill capabilities.)

I would squeeze it into another bottle or whatever. I definitely wanna try one of these. I like the full size Sawyer for ultra emergencies (the apocalypse lol) because it filters waaaay more than a lot of others, as long as you can backwash it.

Why is your caption labeling them as purifiers if the companies that sell them market them as filters? Filtration and purification are two different types of water disinfection and viruses are no removed by filters they have be removed by purification such as a purification system, or boiling and there are a few other methods.

EPIC filters may be OK, but their service is CRAP! Orders take over a month to arrive and only after emailing back and forth and begging for them to dispatch it. I ordered three filters from them recently, weeks later, nothing. When I contacted them, they said it was "lost in the mail". Problem with that is that I never even got an email confirmation of shipment, so not sure how it "got lost". Then I get an email confirmation for one filter dispatch when I paid for three. I go back to them and tell them that I actually ordered three and could they just dispatch my three filters and this is the response I got:
We cannot provide nor confirm the exact time frame or exact items, but we are doing our best to make sure that your order will be shipped out altogether as fast as we can.
I wouldn't recommend. Time to find a new service.

    Im a sawer guy.
Your filters only filter 250 gallons
Sawyer filters up to 100 thousand gallons. Filters down to.1 microns
Sawyer squeeze and micro squeeze can be set up different ways
    Squeeze
    Inline to bladder
    Gravity
Hang system from tree and filter water while doing camp chores or cooking
Sawyer filters can be back flushed to improve flow rate. Neither of yous can
Lastly the Sawyer foundation is giving filters away in 80 different countries to prevent poor people in the poorest parts of the world to keep people from getting sick and dying from water borne diseases
The choice to use Sawyer filters i don't have to think about it except remember.
This filter will last 10+ years if i protect the filter from freezing
