Thank you for the video. While I do mostly shoot full frame I am intrigued by the newest f/1.2 Viltrox lenses at 75mm and now 27mm so I bought both since I just got the A6700. So I’m giving them a try. Not the lightest solution but body + lens is still lighter than a full frame equivalent of equal optical quality. Will see how this goes. Take care.
If you have FF you can get smaller and lighter f1.8 primes, get the same performance and save yourself a stack of money besides. IMHO the advantage of APSC is compactness and lightness. If you are happy to go as chonk as these new Viltrox lenses just get FF instead... The cost savings on APSC are not as large as people think. Thanks to the crop factor for depth of field, as cheaper FF lenses perform as well as the more premium APSC ones.
@@JimIBobIJones 99% of movies made in the past 100 and something years were made with a film frame about the same size as an APSC sensor, slightly smaller actually. The idea that sensor size equals quality is ridiculous and he starts by saying "This lens will give your apsc Sony full-frame results." People obsessed with sensor size aren't going to take good pictures or video regardless of their equipment. Just choose the camera and lens combo that suits your budget and size/weight requirements. Then learn to use it. Learn about light most importantly.
@@elverdaderojavier noone is saying that but you can't defy physics. If you want depth of field the smaller your sensor the more limited you are. F1.2 is only as good as f1.8, and it's cheaper to make a f1.8 lens regardless of whether FF, APSC or m43. You don't go APSC to do it all, you go APSC for the portability. Chungus primes like the viltrox are heavier and bigger (not to mention more expensive) than the FF equivalent f1.8 primes so defeat the point of an APSC setup. For the record I shoot APSC and FF with different cameras...
@@JimIBobIJones You don't choose equipment based on getting the shallowest depth of field possible. That's cookie cutter photography. Again, look at all of your favorite movies and all of the most famous photographs ever taken. Almost none of them were taken with the lens wide open to get the shallowest depth of field. Yes, it's a consideration sometimes, but not enough to make equipment decision based on that. Not being able to get the shallowest depth of field possible isn't keeping anyone from taking a great photo or making a great movie with a small sensor. For video the smaller sensor is the standard. It's not a "crop". For video a shallow depth of field hinders you unless you unless you have a monitor with focus assist and/or a dedicated focus puller.
Amazing video !thanks for the detailed review! QUESTION : I have a fx30 and planning to buy this beast ! Will the payload for both be compatible with RS3 mini gimbal?
Question: I see you own the Sony 24mm GM. I own that lens as well, and I wonder if there is enough difference in length, etc., to need to buy the Viltrox 27mm for the FX30. The 24mm GM gives me around 35mm, give or take, on the FX30. Any input/perspective on this would be truly appreciated beforehand. Cheers and thank you!
They are very similar. The GM is a better lens, but this Viltrox is a tighter focal length and will no doubt give you a hair more background blur as well thanks to the speed and focal length. If the 24 is too wide for you then this might work. 40mm field of view is the middle ground between your 35 and 50mm.
You reviewed the Sony 15mm f1.4 about a year ago. I'm not sure if you've had the chance to try the Viltrox 13mm f1.4. In comparing the Sony 15mm and Viltrox 13mm to the Viltrox 27mm f1.2, which performs better optically and is sharper for video? Which would you prefer and why? Granted the 13mm and 15mm are much wider and for a different use, but it would be interesting to hear your thoughts.
I haven't tried the Viltrox 13mm but it looks good from all reports. The Sony 15mm is a bit overpriced based on the optical quality, but it does have all the cool buttons and dials. I was on the fence about those two as well but it came down to (at the time) thinking the AF would be better on the Sony. I'm not sure how much difference there actually is - Viltrox makes great lenses.
I recently purchase Panasonic S5 IIX with kit lens 20-60 and 50mm f1.8 I’m looking a zoom lens for travel and wildlife (but light weight) Tamron and Sigma 150-600 are heavy So I look for Panasonic 70-300 and Sigma 100-400 L mount Pls suggest TIA
Hi! I was wondering if the performance of the fx30 + this lens in low light become somehow comparable in terms of high iso and noise with the performance of an fx3 + any 1.8 lens. Thanks
When you have a F1.2 lens you'll hardly ever need to push the ISO up anywhere near as far as you would with an F2.8. I have another F1.2 video coming up for the FX30, I will shoot low light samples and comment on that, but a bright lens keeps the ISO way down.
Any Sony FX30 shooters watching? I think you'll get a kick out of this lens. I forgot to mention two things. 1 - I shot this video on the FX3 and a 35mm lens and the lens hood is a little on the not so secure side, but I shoot with ND's outside, so it's not a huge deal. Thanks for the video coverage. The Viltrox really is an awesome lens and work well also for photography.
Thanks, Matti. I am a big fan of this lens and it's great they just released the new firmware for the AF. It appears to be working a lot better now.
Thank you Shane for another valuable video🙏.

I don't have that gimbal, sorry. Find a spec sheet on both and calculate the weights vs. payload. :)
@@GeekyNerdyTechy which one do u have or recommend ?
Will this work on FX3?? Is it full frame?
Available where?! I can't find it anywhere.
No it would create a shallow depth of field of a 27mm 1.2 on a full frame camera opposed to depth of Field of a 40mm 1.2 on a full frame
1.2 x 1.5 = 1.8
Each one is better? Viltrox 27mm or Sony 24mm GM?

Not really. This lens is fast and the results are basically the same as a full frame camera with F1.8 lenses.
If you could have cinema lens shoot a TH-cam video or b roll than you're wasting potential. Bloody shoot a long Movie instead!
