  • Some Dominicans and Haitians in New York are trying to mend fences between their compatriots at home. Clarivel Ruiz and Steve Azor, CEO of 'Ayiti Deploge,' talk on on the project "Dominicans Love Haitians," full of music and poetry.
    TC-168-13. This innocuous set of letters and numbers is the official name of a law passed in the Dominican Republic two and a half years ago, a law that turned a long-held set of prejudices into active discrimination. It was aimed at people of Haitian descent living in the Dominican Republic, and it has made a poor relationship even worse.

    To understand this you need to go back into the history of both countries:
    The massacre of Moca, this was a massacre that took place in Santo Domingo on April 6, 1805 lead by tyrants Dessalines and Christophe with 40,000 Haitian soldiers. Municipalities of Santo Domingo (Monte Plata, Cotuí, La Vega, Santiago and Moca) were reduced to ashes and troops killed Dominicans, including children who were beheaded in a church, during a failed attempt to overthrow Jean-Louis Ferrand.
    67 times did the Haitians tried to invade Dominican Republic in recorded history (with 22 years of continuous invasion) from 1801 up to 1867 when the Haitian government of the time finally accepted dominican independence.
    Dominicans fought and defeated the Haitians after 22 long years of massacres and cruelty occupation in 1844. The Dominican Republic was created against the Haitian occupation not against the Spanish occupation unlike all Spanish colonies did.

    Dominicans hate Haitians? I would have to ask. Do Haitians love Dominicans? What I really don't understand is why Dominican Republic has to be responsible for Haiti's flaws. Haitians should blame their governmente for not developing their country. Dominicans have had to struggle very hard to develop the country, and now the entire world says we are bad. Dominicans have tried many times to legalize Haitians, but hey don't even have birth certificates from their country of origin, some only are know because of a nme and don't have a surname. How can you legalize people that have not existed? On the other hand, Haiti has not developed because of a fine they had to pay to the France for many, many years.

    I’m gonna say this with no hard feelings for either sides I am Haitian and one of my bff’s is Dominican. Haiti needs to get their government straight, stop getting aid from America the same country helped in destroying us, they need to some how get the money that the french stole. I can understand how stressful it must be to have people pouring in when there’s enough people and not enough for all. Dominican Republic needs to stop being colorist and stop deporting native born Haitians. I also want to Apologize for my country on what they did to you guys, enslaving DR was low and disgusting. I’m sorry that this happened to you and words and apologies won’t be enough but I hope that when Haiti gets their priorities straight they will help in aiding DR and have a respectful relationship.

      Wao! Thank you for writing that. Dominicans don't hate Haitians, we have helped them in many ways such as free schools, health, provided jobs, etc. But, the Dominican Republic is an undeveloped country, ans there is alot of poverty in the DR. Many Dominicans go hungry all day. On the other hand, we feel Haitians hate us despite what we do.

      The island is divided between two Nation's. Both have entirely different demographic origins and both have constitutions based on Ethnic origins. Because this for example no Dominican would be able to live in Haiti because their constitution states like D.R. a person must be born of ... Father or mother ... Etc. There social and economic problem on the island mainly due to Haiti's lack of state building and chronic poverty. Political movements like this hurts from people in the diaspora truly being informed about this issue.

    Don't you know the Dominican Republic is the only country in America continent that has fought 2 wars against the mighty USA army, 1916 and 1965?
    We are proud and braves and we do not take orders from anybody; just ask the Haitians what happened to them when they tried to unify the island; event how we were a small army without any war experience.
    Ask the State department about our bravery when they invaded our country and then you will know why the Haitians can not even think or dare to invade with its army again to our country;
    Do you want to know why?
    because in the moment of any crisis we became just one, that is our big strength; one heart one love all for our country until the last Dominican is dead we will still fighting; Do No Mess with the Dominican Republic !!!
    You guys are making things worst because the most you hate us, then we get more united, and then we can take measures against the undocumented Haitians that are actually living peacefully in the Dominican Republic.
    So do not continue to Fuck with our country because we can force our Dominican government to take drastic measures against the almost 2 million Haitians back home and it will be more problems for the Haitians populations in DR.

But since Wednesday, the debate is no longer seeking to understand how to help them, but it revolves around the question of the Dominican humanitarian aids. The photo showing the impressive Dominican convoy already angry "nationalist" even before his arrival in the country. For some, the Haitian authorities should have categorically denied this assistance provided by our neighbor. Lest it hinders national sovereignty. For others, you have to put pride aside and think of preference to these suffering people. It must touch .."

    Haiti and the Dominican Republic are demographically and culturally different. Both of their constitutions are based on ethnic origins like Japan. Ethnicity based on color is a social construct. Dominican's are a heterogeneous ethnic group while Haitians are a homogeneous ethnic group. We have entirely different demographic origins on the island. Both nation's have a complex history, mutual understanding should not come from a revisionism of it. Both sides should be respected. There's a social and economic conflict mainly due to mismanagement and corruption in Haiti. While there are examples of corruption on both sides on Haitian side it is more aparent mainly due to the elite. For this reason there is a demographic surge of Haitains on the D.R. side. Because of this the majority of Dominicans will state they do not want to take the responsibility of Haiti social and economic problems. There was already a failed unification (1822-1844). Realistically neither side would agree to another unification. It more practical based on our history both sides sovereignty and identity should be respected. Neither side would want a pseudo agenda forced on them.
