A floormate at MSU played Misplaced Childhood quite a bit, and our college station started playing Kayleigh. I was hooked and became a fan. Thanks for digging into these two albums.
Another excellent discussion, thanks guys. I could argue both these albums as Marillion's best, but overall the flow and sequence of the tracks on Misplaced Childhood as one long piece, with so many brief but memorable hooks, makes it my favourite. It's such a varied but ultimately uplifting mood journey. Fish's lyrics on Misplaced Childhood too are so enigmatic and evocative, whereas on Clutching At Straws I find them a little more depressing. By the way, it's the bonus disc on the Clutching At Straws 1999 remaster which has the fascinating early versions of songs whose elements ended up on Vigil and Season's End.
Just for the record , I love both. 👍👍😉 I saw them on the Misplaced Childhood tour in Blackpool , North west England , and to say that gig changed my musical life is an understatement. Great discussion guys !!! 🎵🎵😍🤘
I bought both of these albums when they were brand new, and "CAS" holds up better for me 30 years later. But honestly, I've since become far more of a Hogarth era fan (1989 trough to today) and it's those albums after "CAS" have become the Marillion albums that I listen to on a regular basis.
I wasn't into Marillion in the 80s. I had a friend who got me into thrash metal at that time. We used to go to record stores a lot. Used to see the Marillion records and the artwork was amazing. My friend had a Kerang magazine and they had Marillion ranked, so I asked him what he thought of them. He said never mind they SUCK!!! So I took his word for it. Didn't really start listening to them till a couple years ago. What a mistake, how could I have missed out. Par for the course in my world. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I feel like I'm supposed to like Clutching - because everyone else does . Maybe Im insensitive to alcoholism , but it sounds like song after song of a guy in a bar complaining .... no intense lyrics like "your carnation will rot in the vase". To me Misplaced Childhood is better... But after watching, I see that there was really good musicianship on clutching... and I'll give it another listen . In general I've just come back to Marillion . I first heard them from borrowing albums from the library as a teenager . I ended up leaving them behind when I went to college... and now coming back , Im really impressed and am buying up all the Fish albums (trying to get the deluxe versions) .
I'd give it to Misplaced by a slight bit as it's tighter and more cohesive. That being said, they're both masterpieces and I see/hear them as almost one musical piece.
My mom was a fan of marillion in college and as such I grew up listening to misplaced childhood. Later as an adult I listened to clutching at straws at my mom's recommendation and man what a great album! It's impossible for me to choose between them because while I think clutching at straws is the better album, misplaced childhood is so nostalgic for me that they end up as equals in my mind.
The original vinyl release of "Reel To Reel" was a single album of 46 minutes. It was later expanded in 1984 for CD and expanded even further on the Japan Mini vinyl CD release.
Eric is a great guy, and great friend. I will 💯be going back and forth between this and Grant/ Pete - yacht rock in the 900-1000 slot / but will💯rewatch in entirety afterwards. See you tomorrow Tom 👍💯
Hey. Tom. Sot fans super super loyal. Twice I advertised your channel on live chat, I think you’ll see some new faces. Like I said, wish you much success. 👍💯

Great story, I was in on Marillion pretty early because I loved Genesis so much. I really love the Fish era.

The first four albums are fanastic. .
Episode 3: Return of the Eric!
The Deluxe Edition of Clutching has a disc with demos with Fish for what "might" have become Season's End plus parts of Vigil.
👍 I need to relisten to those
Very cool, I need to buy that deluxe edition. Would be cool to listen to
Great show as always guys! Clutching edges it out by a hair for me as well. What a fantastic band
Thanks Logan, glad you enjoyed the show

They are both so strong, definitely the sweet spot for Marillion.
I love that your Mom was such a big fan!
That’s a great story, wish I could get my daughter to listen to good music 😂
