GC 1023 Metal Detector - Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

  • In this video I'm "unboxing" my new GC-1023 metal detector. I believe "GC" stands for "Gold Century". It seems to be a Chinese product. I was impressed with some TH-cam footage showing the Bounty Hunter Junior. I did a little bit of research and came across this GC-1023 unit. I saw this machine for the price of 70 Euro (NEW) and could not resist.
    It turned out to be a wolf in sheep's clothing. It may look like a toy (for some people), but it is a serious, professional metal detector with great performance. If you are thinking, that the performance is only great "for the price", you are wrong. This machine can be compared to the "best" metal detectors on the market. It may even outperform some of them (in heavy iron conditions for example)...
    I made already one 4h hunt with this detector (under real world conditions) and will try to upload some footage in the near future.

      MetalDetecting24 I got a bounty hunter now and this still sounds better to me hahaha the one I have is extremely simple with basically no features. Just a switch with disc, tone , and all metals and a disc and sensitivity knob. That's it. I like the quick silver detector better so I'll probably get that one IF I don't get this one that I forgot about haha

      Good detector and virtually as fast as the GC-1023 but has a lower trash tone and is a little heavier and less balanced than the GC-1023. All in all though, it (does) seem comfortable for long hunts. Seems to not be as deep as the GC 1023 though and (no), an internal adjustment of the sensitivity pot did not help when I tried that approach (and) I also had to readjust the tone pot (and) the ground balance pot as well. Could void the warranty (and certainly would) if the factory knew this procedure had been attempted. But like I said, adjusting for more depth internally didn't give me any noticeable increase so it seems they used lower-priced capacitors, resistors, and highly passive consumer-grade pots instead of components that the more expensive companies might use in theirs. BUT once again, even though one (might) buy a much more expensive MD, this (DOES NOT) ever guarantee they will have a superior detector in (any) way. Also in average ground, the majority of coins can be found with even just a little $50 detector. If they're there, they're there and if they're not, nothing good will be found, PERIOD. No matter how expensive the detector. One can either use a Minelab to find pocket change in a park (or) find 95 % of these (same) goodies with a $50 detector in that (same) park. Tried it side-by-side with a guy using his $1800 Minelab CZ23 versus my little BH Tracker IV. Found the (same) type items (and) the same amount as he did. Just makes some people feel better when they are sold on the idea that more expensive equals 'better' or something I guess. But it just not true. NOW in old house yards, YES, depth is one of the most important factors.

    MAANN!!!! You're not kidding MetalDetecting24!! That (IS) a (VERY) fast little detector!! Man, I tell you, if I had seen more vids on this little machine appx. 3 years ago when I got back into MD'ing after a long hiatus, I (don't) think I would've been buying this and buying that (MD's of course) just to try and find the right one. I've gone through trying the old BFOs, T/Rs, older VLFs from the 80s to the DeepTech Vista Gold, Mikron NRG-110, Fisher 1270X, Tesoro Tejon/Golden uMax(very capable, fast detector), just to name a few! I had always seen this one for sale on websites but did not want to buy one without enough research videos online about this machine. I, for three years, had the wrong idea about this detector, thinking it was a slow, cheap, weak, underpowered detector like a number of other detectors I used that are built in China as well. One is the Harbor Freight 9-Function MD (which is single-tone) and quite sensitive to shallower targets (BUT) it could not go much deeper than 6" on a quarter. I didn't even (DREAM) that for a little more money, I could get the GC-1023 like you have and get a machine that's (almost) got the response time/recovery speed of my Mikron and DeepTech with the (added) fact that the GC-1023 has better discrimination yet (STILL) has lightning-quick target separation. WOW!! You know in (some) ways, it comes down to an issue of price; (LITERALLY)!! I have begun to learn that as you seem to be doing and have now gone back to doing a little more research on some of these significantly lower-priced machines and (HAVE ACTUALLY) found, to my complete surprise and amazement, that in the MD world, dynamite (REALLY) can come in small packages. $120 versus $700 (+/-) for the Mikron or the DeepTech. The (ONLY) question I might have to you is, does the GC-1023 have good depth in the two-tone search mode with the sens. to max and the disc. set just before nickel/tab elimination ???

      +Prairie G Hi, thank you for the comment! I'm sorry for the late answer. I fully agree with you. I made similar mistakes in the past. If I had the experience at the beginning, I would make different decisions... Unfortunately you have to try everything for yourself. Everyone has other "expectations". There are also many people on the internet with a hidden agenda... Some of them are showing amazing tests in carefully chosen conditions. Others are talking only about positive sides, never showing any flaws...
      If someone is new to MD (like I was 3 y. ago), he might easily become victim of (so called) experts. If you look around, you will get the impression, that an inexpensive detector will not find anything. You need "the best", the most expensive one, or a certain brand, like the people who are hyping it. When you gain more experience and discover that the ones who are advertising a certain machine, are actually struggling with it, you get an idea how "everything works"...
      As for the GC-1023 - unfortunately I can not tell you how deep it is. I simply have no comparison. I assume that it is not the deepest machine, but only a head to head test in undisturbed soil could clarify it. when I hunted with it, the disc was set very low (just to reject nails). I could not find any (real) deep targets, but I could not find any deep targets with my Deus and the 11" coil neither (at the exact same spot). It all depends on the location. I found a 10x5" box relatively deep in the ground (I have a video on that - I could try to upload it in the future). I was able to raise the coil and got still a signal. That would at least prove a good performance on cache-sized targets.
      There is also one problem with the 2-tones mode (it produces iron signals when in reality nothing is there). I don't know if you have seen my other videos. I'm showing this issue at the beginning. I don't know why the machine is doing this. It's not the end of the world, but it could be annoying for some people. Just be aware of it (it may be only my unit that is doing this...).
      I would recommend this detector for iron infested sites, but please don't count only on my opinion. I don't want to be responsible, should this machine not meet your expectations ;). It is working great for me (until now), but there are many factors like soil conditions etc.

      Try a little Bounty Hunter Gold Digger/VLF. They aren't as quick or as deep as the GC-1023 but they are positive high tone on good targets and positive low-tone on bad, better than MANY other detectors, even like when I hunt with my friend and his Whites MXT. Find same amount as him (usually), when I do use my little BH (VLF). Not to be confused with the kiddy-version VLF 2.1.

    Got one finally and can't (wait) to get it out on a ballfield and hunt with it!! Gotta wait 'till the rain lets up and then wait a day or two for the lawns to be dry. Don't MD when it's wet. Too hard to get them totally cleaned (and) mud and moisture can and will ruin a detector (eventually). One exception; if someone's using a submersible underwater detector. But the GC-1023, like (most) machines, can only be gotten wet (below) the control box. If the whole box drops in water or is used in drenching rain, you're screwed! One would have to take it apart and dry the entire internal circuitry before reusing it (and) having it work right.

      @MetalDetecting24  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Prairie G I'm very happy for you. I hope you will enjoy hunting with it like I do. Please let me know, what you think about this detector as soon as you try it. I was hunting in the rain with the Makro Racer... I thought it was "weather"proof, but I realized at home that it wasn't the case. Fortunately nothing happened to the electronics, but I will not do it again.

      VERRRRY sorry to get back to you so late MD24. I've had problems off and on with my computer hard drive(s) totally going dead and unfortunately, I lost all my data so I also lost your video here until I rediscovered it whilst looking at another MD vid. I know I should've backed up my computer but that seems like a long, time-consuming, and 'not-so-easy task', lol. Well I (have) taken my MD-1023 (same as your 'GC-1023' but just under another company) and used it on football fields and in parks and yes, (exactly) like you demonstrate in your vids, these little detectors are (LIGHTNING) quick and are more of a real machine than just the cheap sub-$100 'toys' out there. The old, discontinued BH sharpshooter (2-tone)/radio shack two-knob detectors are deeper (maybe), for a sub-$100 detector than the GC/MD-1023 (but) they are (nowhere) as quick as the 1023's. The 1023's are up in the category (almost), as a DeepTech Vista Gold/Smart, in terms of speed but are only a (fraction) the cost of that detector which I don't even think is made anymore for that matter. Too bad you had to cut away and alter yours but no, you gotta do what you gotta do, especially if it's too long. I was thinking of drilling holes on the bottom, underneath the shaft and inserting a clip inside the lower shaft so that the lower (and) upper shaft would stay put. Mine kept wobbling and turning; a real sloppy oversight in the design of this machine, by the Chinese but I simply used some white electrical tape and taped the lower to the upper, then tightened up the connector. My fix works great and there's no more twisting and turning of the lower shaft and coil. Also, in reply to your older staements, yes, I do believe you're very correct in that there may (very) well be a hidden agenda to promote heavily and pump up some inflated, (maybe exaggerated) claim or claims about a specific brand and/or brand(s) and the buyer better be (VERY) careful in what they see and watch on all the particular brands and models. There (ARE) not always what they seem according to the many vids out there. I've tested around 60 different brand/models and many of them were virtually identical in depth and some were not anywhere as deep as they claimed. The (ONLY) one that did what the company said it would was when I bought a 'lightly used' (1 or 2 times +/-), Nexus Bonanza for $290 which are $535 brand new. I bought mine from someone in Britain and it looked to be well taken care of. Pretty lightweight but not the most sturdy detector made. And that's the only downside. Other than that though, NO other of my machines, not even my Tesoro Tejon, can match it's depth. Just speaking from my own thorough tests I did with this machine in my own backyard on the small U.S. dime buried and various different depths. It will sound off on targets not even my friend's Whites MXT can detect but once again though, all this being said, I (still) would go back to the trusty little GC/MD-1023 or my DT Vista Gold as far as recovery speed/target separation goes. They are very hard, if not impossible to beat in this category. JUST WISH they would've made the GC/MD-1023 to go a couple inches deeper though, LOL, than you and I would (really) have a very well-rounded machine with these little detectors. The MD/GC-1023 did get the recovery speed/response time 'bang on' though. WOW!!Now if only you or I, had a lot of skill and knowledge of electronics, we could (maybe) mod the sensitivity pot with a larger electrical capacity potentiometer without burning something else up on the circuit board but since at least I don't have those skills, I think I'll just maybe turn the sensitivity set-screw on the internal pot and leave it at that. Not too much though, because that can sometimes throw off the ground balance and tone on these two-tone machines and we (DO NOT) want to do that because they are a %&#*@($' tch to get back into proper adjustment. Been there, done that, LOL. One can, and sometimes does, effect the other, especially in tone-i.d. md's like ours.

      Hello,
      thank you very much for the comment. Yes, the shaft is a little bit problematic. I could not swing it how I wanted, because the "heavy" coil turned together with the shaft. I was thinking about using the telescopic rod from the Deus, but at the moment I will "modify" the Makro Racer first (the ergonomics of this detector are "not the best").
      You are right about the depth. It is not that bad as some people (who can not accept, that a 80 Euro detector is doing a better job than their often overpriced machine) wish, it would be. But, a few extra inches could always help.
      It would be great when we knew, which part could have been replaced with "a better component"...
      Have a great day.
      P.S. "Nexus Bonanza" - now you made me curious :). I will try to find some info.

      i tweaked both pots inside 1023 and no gain in depth /sens was seen .so returned to base .
      gc-1022 on other hand has the sens pot and its nearest on board to sens control knob . however i,m not 100% sure if recovery speed was same as 1023 ,it was deeper after a tweak ,maybe one inch.only single tone as well .

      Go for it (unless you already looked into and/or bought one; good for you if you did by the way). If you haven't, I'd suggest to you to see if you can find a well-kept used one on ebay or elsewhere, for a nice discount. Remember, these are around $530 U.S./new. Don't know how much that would be when converted to Pfennigs. They are a little fickle around high-trash areas (and) be prepared to dig (very) deep junk (sometimes) (as well as) good stuff really deep too. I'd say depth is comparable to, and maybe somewhat deeper than a well-tuned Tesoro Tejon. At least as deep as an XP Deus with the larger optional coil although larger coils, remember, very often don't translate into deeper detection. That's a very widespread myth in the MD hobby and seems to be used as a way to sell "bigger, better, AND deeper" coils, LOL. Well Good Luck MD24!! Take care, Greg.

      Hi, I got mine from Ebay. This detector could have different names, but it looks like the same unit in the link you posted.

      Yeah, you know MD24, I noticed that the MD1023, and the GC1023 are exactly the same, lol. Just that the 'GC' designation is licensed to be made under the gold country badge but may be like Chrysler is to Dodge. Same car/truck, just different badge and trim, lol, oh and more expense too, lol!

    Hello you auditioned with gold?

    • @conan6908
      @conan6908 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They work great on any gold. ALL depends, as with any metal detector on where you put the discrimination level, sweep speed, angle-of-search, overlap, etc, etc. ALL detectors can find gold, past or present but the trick is, making sure to not eliminate thin gold when trying to eliminate the sound from aluminium tabs from being detected. This is very hard but not impossible to do but the settings (must) be correct and the operator to know what he is doing (and) how to hunt properly.

    What size is the coil

    • @MetalDetecting24
      @MetalDetecting24  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it's 8" (I will have to measure it).

    What's the depth on the gc1023

    • @MetalDetecting24
      @MetalDetecting24  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't answer this question, because I haven't compared it to my other detectors (side by side). I think it is not "very" deep on small targets, but I have found bigger objects at surprisingly depth. I will try to edit a video in the future that shows one example.

      Not very deep. It detects coins up to 13 centimeters deep, which is not impressive. But it still is a great machine, especially for the price.

    It worth 82€?

    • @conan6908
      @conan6908 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not in my opinion. Save a few Euros and just stick with the cheaper GC1023 (AND) I think the GC1023 can actually go an inch or two deeper too. The GC1025 is selling more on features but seems to not detect as deep and I was disappointed with the more expensive 1025.

    hi md24
    i came across the gc-1023 back in march while i was researching chinese clones . i was planning to buy a gf2 and doing as much reseach as possible so i didnt buy a lemon .
    in the process i ended up buying the gc-1023 as well based on this review .www.treasurenet.com/forums/metal-detecting/118815-gold-century-gc1023.html
    I have no regrets and whole heartedly recommend it to all as a trashy site 1st choice. ,the gc-1023 is as good if not better than a euro ace ,
    and the gf2 is a £140 t2 clone that just needs a decent coil adding to complete package,mars tiger works great with gf2..

      +goldfinder gc1023 Thanks for the comment. I saw some very impressive videos of the Bounty Hunter Junior. I was looking for something similar, with a little bit more depth. I believe, the GC-1023 can be compared with any high end machine when it comes to performance in iron.

      Check out scannerguy1968's fieldtests .he has a good test bed and tested the BHJ . I have suggested the gc1023 to him ,cant wait for him to do that one .i know it will do loads better than the gofind 60 .

      +goldfinder gc1023 Thank you, I saw his excellent video. I believe it was his BHJ test (and your comment) that made me curious and triggered the purchase. I would like to see how the GC-1023 performs in his test bed.

      i,ve heard it said the gc-1016 is a even better cherry picker .but it has smaller coil and therefore less depth,but even better separation and same recovery speeds. .
      the gc-1022 has the same control box but larger coil like the 1023.
      1016/1022 control unit has a pot inside for the power that can be turned up to chatter point ,giving extra bit of depth when run on good ground .

      +goldfinder gc1023 That's interesting, thanks for the info. I will try to find more about the gc-1016 in this case. I was a little bit disappointed (or let's say surprised) with the weight of the GC-1023 coil. It's not a problem at all, but I have expected less.
