10:46 "It's all about the voice."
Yes, for the most part. But not during the guitar solo! When are you finally going to take guitar solos seriously, Amy?

11:49 I don't hear the instrumental portion of the song as being an electronic, synthesized production with a guitar track over it.
The drum track is a mic'ed acoustic kit and the bass is an analog bass guitar.
The keyboards sound like a Hammond-B3 and a Wurlitzer. They could be soft synths? But, recording real instruments and recording midi from a controller is not much more of a process.. So, if an authentic blues performance and tone is what they were after? It would be surprising if they tracked midi info and triggered a sound module on playback. A vocal track like this one, deserves to not have simple corners cut unnecessarily.

She’s released multiple solo recordings, I like most, but her collaboration with Joe Bonamassa are extraordinary. Listen to her “I’d Rather Be a Blind Girl, or I’ll Take Care of You, with Joe providing blues guitar. Otherworldly good.

Beth Hart is one of the finest and most versatile blues rock songwriters, musicians, and singers of the last 20+ years and quite frankly of all time. She can take you deep in the depth of the blues and then take you to the stars. She sings what she has experienced, and if anyone has a right to sing the blues, it is the troubled Beth Hart. I've see her perform live; she interacts with the audience and tells you what inspired each song. She'll tell you about her terrible struggles with mental illness and drug abuse and how she rose from the ashes of her serious personal problems. It's like sitting down with an old friend and having a good honest talk; it's like a spiritual experience. If you think this song is good, check out her live versions of Am I The One and Skin when she was emaciated and in deep personal trouble with mental illness and drugs. She was so troubled then, but that spirit was still there. Her rebirth and on-going struggles are inspirational. Always touching, always deep, always real, Beth Hart is absolutely an excellent, true artist. 👍👍👍👍👍

This was just before she crashed and burned. This is deep stuff, but its where the troubles and emotions of life are explored.

Beth Hart does magic with her voice, she brings raw emotion to the music experience. Blues is about emotion, if the audience does not connect at this level then the job is not done. Blues is a mayor ingredient in Rock music, one you can't leave a side if you want to unders tand rock music.

I really enjoyed your reaction Amy, Beth Hart is one of my favorite singers. She is able to conjure so much emotion with her voice and that for me is what musical enjoyment is all about. I would like to commend to you Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa, "I Would Rather Go Blind", The song from 1967 was originally written for Etta James. The combination of Beth's voice and Joe's emotional guitar work brings me to tears every time.

The music behind Beth's voice provides the rainy atmosphere and mood of the song. The opening notes on the Fender Rhodes piano are like raindrops and they recur throughout the piece. The guitar solos match the emotions of Beth's vocals.
I figured out that the track Amy is listening to is from Beth's album "Bang Bang Boom Boom" from 2012. The guitar solos were performed by Joe Bonamassa. From what I can conclude from the album credits shows Beth on Piano, Arlan Schierbaum on Organ, Michael Rhodes on Bass and Randy Flowers on (rhythm) guitar. There are three drummers credited on the album, but I would guess that on "Caught Out In The Rain", Anton Fig played the drums. Michael Rhodes and Anton Fig recorded with Joe Bonamassa at that time. The producer of the album is Kevin (Caveman) Shirley. Kevin produced many of Joe's records. Shirley also produced albums by Rush, Iron Maiden, Journey and many others. 🎸😎
ps. "Riders on the Storm" by the Doors, highlights a Fender Rhodes used to sound like rain.

Singers like Beth Hart defy technical analysis because she has to be heard and felt to appreciate the emotion she projects. It's something that cannot be written down in sheet music. Your analysis describes it well. As far as the band, they are there to provide the foundation over which she performs. She is the essence of the Blues. The musical foundation is much the same as James Brown's "It's a Mans World", another great song.

  • @joepierce1672
    @joepierce1672 ปีที่แล้ว +9

This is what Blues is about. It has nothing to do with how many bars, or other technical stuff. It's about how it affects your soul. Any one can sing the words, but but she sings like she means it.

Her track on the Les Paul and Friends album, “I Wanna Know You” with guitarist Neal Schon, features one of the most powerful female blues vocals I’ve ever heard…simply stunning, and understandingly jaw-dropping. Neal’s guitar answers her vocal with equal passion, and I can’t for the life of me understand why this track isn’t universally hailed as one of the greatest recordings in the history of the blues. It’s really, honestly that good!

One of the interesting elements of blues that makes it very different from how Classical music is approached today is the idea of improvisation. Most blues "songs" are really not fully fleshed out songs (Although they can be. There are "blues standards") most are merely a framework of a song; a collection of motifs, riffs, comps, etc that the musicians come together and improvise a completed piece out of (especially interesting when keeping in mind that most blues musicians in the past had zero music education) Some of it gets rather complicated because there are motifs and riffs that traditionally lead to specific, semi-predictable changes in key, metre or intensity. Blues is basically musical Legos (and Jazz is basically musical Lego Technic).

"when she sings it, she's living it... " very well put. when i listen to Beth Hart in a pensive way, which is often how she compels her attentive audience to listen, i wonder, if she wasn't the tormented soul she is, could she ever possibly be the creative, emotive talent that she definitely is? creative artists seem to frequently face these struggles with bouts of mental anguish. as an observer, i have often worried and even feared for her.

It's a beautiful song and your review was beautiful, Amy! 👍👍👍👍👍 The subject matter of the song is definitely blues, and the music is blues rock with other elements thrown in. Beth began classical music lessons as a very young child and played the cello. She is a big fan of Yo Yo Ma and loves classical music; she listens to it every day. She is also very knowledgeable about the classic jazz, blues, rock, and R&B singers. You hear all of those influences and elements in her music. Her songs can vary in those styles. She can go from sounding like Billie Holiday to sounding like Janis Joplin. To hear her express so many emotions and things in life is a real treat for any fan of high quality music. I truly hope that you examine more of Beth's music. I'm certain that you will be fascinated by her and the rest of her music as I am. Her interviews are always very revealing about who she is and how she crafts her music. As you said, she is "compelling". Thank you so much for reviewing this underrated artist, and I very much look forward to your next Beth Hart song review. 👏👏👏

If you think the human vocal instrument and what it does can't be quantified or analyzed the way other musical instrumentation can, you should listen to what The Charismatic Voice has to say about it. Elizabeth is a classically trained opera singer and she knows her instrument very very well (and how to explain it to laypeople).

Beth Hart is an amazing singer songwriter. She does have her own band, and also has performed with Joe Bonamassa, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy and many others on the side. To see this live at the Royal Albert Hall is so much better to understand and see how she performs her song. If you have never heard of her before start with this one of a kind performance Beth Hart "Am I the One" live at Paradiso. "Caught out in the Rain" , "Leave the Light On" , "Take it Easy On Me" all Live at Royal Albert Hall, Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa "I'd Rather Go Blind" live in Amsterdam. She has had a career from the 90's to today and is very open about her bouts with addiction and mental illness. But her experience translates into phenomenal live performances. Please try: Leave a Light On, You Belong to Me, St. Theresa and Am I The One. Those are originals. Also try her collaborations with Joe Bonamassa, especially I'd Rather Be Blind. I absolutely agree with you about the voice of the blues! One song that always gets me is 'This Bitter Earth', sung by Dinah Washington, you might know it already? This lady, Beth Hart, I would place in the same category as Janice Joplin, although I'm not sure if a comparison would be fair or all that accurate. If you don't know Dinah, give her a listen, it's truly worth it!

MMM ! I really like that you will dive into pretty
much every thing , it's great because every one
learns a little bit more after this I'm going to get
back into her Led Zeppelin tribute , I might
be of the opinion that Beth Hart could be
the only one with the "chops" whatever that means
To pull of a Robert Plant song convincingly .
    (just what I think) .

Beth’s live performance of this song at The Royal Albert Hall is absolutely breathtaking. Her live shows are incredible. She has amazing stage presence, and is very willing to engage her audience on a very personal level. I was privileged enough to see her in February of 2022, and it was the experience of a lifetime. Thank you for giving Beth a listen.
PS. Mr John Nichols on lead guitar, Tom Lilly on bass guitar, and I believe it is Todd Wolf on drums.

Thank you, Vlad.! we are getting into the soul of American music now. Pick another Beth Hart song, anyone, she is fantastic. I will say that blues is a gate, and once you open it there is no turning back. It is different than Metal or Pop. It is from the soul. where I grew up the old men played in the clubs, it was a collection of stories produced musically as most had a different kind of learning other than classical. it came from a world where the soul was all they had to survive. Take a few sessions and listen to "I'd Rather go Blind" or even better listen to Edda James do the original. Also of course Soul music out of Memphis. Issaac Hayes hot Buttered Soul. I believe that she would love the journey,

Before this video I had not heard of Beth Hart. This is straight blues music. Recorded in the 90's but it might have well been the 60's. It even includes the Hammond style organ sound and backing vocals that sound like gospel quire. The music, as in notes on paper, is super simple but that is the wrong direction in evaluating this music.
Amy, my suggestion of how a classical musician would approach a song like this is not looking for complex musical constructs or arrangements or anything like that but to take an English language word and make it a "music term" and that word is soul. We look for the soul, is the artist (singer) and how is the artist expressing soul and is this soul being transcended emotionally from the artist to the listener. Is the listener's chest tightening up and acking from pain just listening to this music, does she have the listener fully captured, drawn into her sphere? The music is far trickier than one might think, it is supportive to the voice but it is supposed to add something to the song while not disrupting, messing up this journey that we are on with this song and that is an art all of its own.
The guitar, in my opinion played a rather big role and was again i.m.o. done expertly and mixed in quite forward with a lot of presence but I read in comments below that the guitarist is Joe Bonamassa and I am familiar with him, a very accomplished guitar player.
I liked it a lot and I said I don't know this artist. What I will look for next is a whole album listen, what kind of experience is that? Is it 10 songs that are more of the same or can she mix it up with different experiences and make a package that is a good 50 minutes, or so, complete listening. Can she capture me through that much time with different songs. And it sounds very promising.

Hi cobber, If you enjoyed Beth and are already aware of Joe Bonamassa then I recommend that you check out anything from their “Live in Amsterdam” collaboration. There isn’t a weak track on the entire album but I’m sure that you will enjoy their interpretation of the old Etta classic “I’d rather go blind”

This track is almost certainly influenced by the 1975 version of Its a Man's World by the great Australian blues soul singer Renee Geyer, who passed 9 days ago. Some of Renee's work was released in the USA and she was a backup singer for some of the greats there.

Beth Hart has a band. Beth Hart is a blues artist which explains why no one has heard of her. Getting radio airplay is hard for that genre of music and many record stores may not carry artists like Beth Hart. Beth is a great live musician and she writes amazing lyrics. Some of Beth's best work is with guitarist Joe Bonamassa. She is currently back touring after the pandemic restrictions. Beth is more popular in Europe than America and sells out large halls there. Watch the live version of this song done at Royal Albert Hall in 2018.
