  • There are a lot of factors that go into a freelance hourly rate, and this video doesn't even scratch the surface. But I am talking about the biggest mistake I see new freelancers make with hourly rates and a quick formula to use instead in a pinch when you don't have time to research.

Hourly had me burned out so fast. It’s a hard lesson to learn but the industry is evolving the more freelancers learn how to figure the pricing piece out

Yes! Being open with each other about pricing strategies helps us all win, imo! So thankful for Facebook groups for that reason haha

This made perfect sense! Ty! Two questions: How do you handle when clients say you charge too much? I'm just starting out and I've been told my packages are too expensive. Also, how do I figure out how many hours it would take to design something and how can I provide the client proof? Every project is super different and takes different amounts of time.

I'm starting out too, in fact, I haven't even launched my business. All the study and research I've done usually suggest the first-timer clients offer some discount, for example, you go to your favourite online shop, a pop-up comes up and says 'place your first order you receive your 10% off etc'. Maybe offer something similar, but then once they are returning then firmly say sorry that discount is only for first-time clients, long term clients have to pay full etc. These are just examples.

Don't show your clients any hourly proof, just a package price, customers are usually thinking in cost rather than value + all the marketing and non-client work hours that went into your prices.
If someone says your prices are too high there's not much you can do, don't lower your prices, maybe say they can give you non-monetary compensation of equal value to fit the rest of the budget so the client feels the full price of the package. When you've determined a hourly rate (which is just the minimum) you get more strength in professionally telling people to go away once you notice that they are trying to waste your time and make you starve and be homeless. Rather than be underpaid most of that time spent on 0 to low paying clients can be spent on your portfolio, marketing, learning etc.
