This was a great review of the various Mizuno irons. At times it was difficult to keep track of which head was which because you were moving them around almost like a magic trick!!
The one misconception that a lot of people have is that a blade is for a low handicap player. While it maybe true in some regards, strike is more important than handicap. I was a single digit player before I had numerous injuries and illnesses. This year coming back after 6 years off I'm now a mid handicap player and working my way back. I consistently strike center of the face but it's face to path that is my nemesis right now. I have a old set of blades that i can strike very well. But leaving the face open still leaves them going right. Just be honest with yourself about your playing ability and keep an open mind in a fitting.
Got my first set of Mizunos in april (Pro223), and they are just awesome. Looks great at adress, and when hit properly they just feels amazing. Playing of approx hcp 8-10 these are just perfect for me.
@@EFG2 your recent test: jpx 923 hot metal pro(28 degrees, 180 yards)vs 225(173 yards, 30 degree)...If they have same degree of loft, will they have similar distances Or maybe a few yards difference? Big difference in forgiveness in your opinion?
@@giomusah2155 The distance tracked very close with the lofts. Call it between 5 and 8 yards overall. I think the longer irons will be more forgiving in the JPX line, shorter irons will see less of a difference with the 225. I personally like a mixed set idea with 225 and JPX923 HL. The standard lofts on those two sets would blend well together without any need to start bending lofts most likely.
Be careful they probably won’t combo as the HL have weaker lofts so won’t blend with the standards without using say two seven irons so as to create gapping.
I’m booked in for a fitting end of the month. The 225s are what I think will suit me best in paper. Keen to see what the fitting shows works best for me though! 225s are gorgeous 😍
I'd like a manufacturer to produce a traditional loft iron with added forgiveness. I swing the club fast enough and I don't need to carry my 7 iron 190.
Takomo 101T and 201 are an option. They are direct to consumer so there aren’t fitting options but if you know what kbs shaft works for you and any offset you may need they’re a solid option at a cheaper price
Good stuff. I've been interested in doing a combo of JPX and MPs. This video helped me see that I need to really be careful of the different lofts. The MPs are just so damn appealing.
I have a pretty unusual combination in my bag: MP 221 PW-7, with JPX HMP 7-5. The two 7’s have about 5 degrees between them so the lofting is perfect if you can get over carrying two of the same numbered iron.
Played T Zoid Pro and MP64, both with traditional lofts, both with standard 10m gaps. Apart from blades, new M go thru a 1degree less loft range but with only 7 clubs not 8 (3-PW) When changing shafts Project X5.5 to Nippon 120 S. I was asked to try 921 Hot Metal Pro and having hit the 6 I compared it with my 5 (same loft) and just changed shafts. Seek feedback on 223 /225 distance gaps in 8-PW irons, as you don't trial a set only 1 club.
One omission in the commentary perhaps? Could the presenter have linked each club to low mid and higher handicap categories (although it was clear what iron was best for the low handicap golfers)
Just had an opportunity to test the new JPX 923’s. The JPX 923 Hot Metal Pro is my choice with a bit more distance than current Mizuno gamer (JPX 800 Pro Forged 2010 Version) due to the stronger lofts. I also found out the i should be using a 2 degree toe up lie. I had a flatter swing and have changed to swing path. Now I understand why I hit shots that are more toward the toe. I usually find that if I address the ball more toward the hosel at address that I hit the sweet spot better. AJ, is it possible to bend my JPX800 Pro Forged irons to achieve the 2 degree toe up lie angle? Great videos. I hope your new shop is meeting expectations.
Think I prefer the standard hot metal JPX 923 for my skill level and the fact that I do not want to practice to spare my lower back. I looked at the 921 recently, and that club looks good. I would also get the set wedges down to the sand and maybe lob wedge. I am looking at the 923 hot metal knowing the lofts are possibly too strong.
I just played my first round with the 923 HM yesterday and I absolutely love them. Coming from Taylormade RSi 1 it was a comelrtrly different feel for me which I really enjoyed. The jacked up lofts surprisingly doesn’t equate to much more yardage which I didn’t mind. Wasn’t really looking for extra distance but that forgiveness and feel. Which is what these clubs have. I enjoyed hitting my irons yesterday and they are a sharp looking set
Great summary of these.. i currently play the 921pros .. was considering going to the new 923pros or 225's but I really don't know how much "better" that upgrade is , or if it's even worth it. Hit the 225's in a bay already and liked them but again "how much better" are they really to the 921pros i already have ? Thanks again, all this info is super helpful
I went for a fitting earlier this year, it came down to pro 225s or 921 forged, the 225s were realistically 3 yards longer, but everything else was the same. Apart from 2 things, the price, and the workability. I'm not good enough for the 921 tour or 221 pro, but i do like to hit different shots when need arises. Yes you can fade, draw etc the 225's but for me it was much easier with the forged. Not looked back and so happy I'm probably not gonna look at irons again for at least 10 years.
Good presentation and facts always enjoy your videos. Fan of mobile clubmaker too. A question did Mizuno make A and B heads for swing weight adjustment? What are normal swing weights for the JPX923 ballpark is fine. Thanks
Got some irons to hit this winter. Interested in the JPX 223 Forged, 225, 223, and Srixon's new Zx5/Zx7 mkii. Would love to combo these and have the more forgiving in the longer irons, precious in scoring.
I've hit the srixon 7 and 5 very nice clubs , definitely cheaper in price , but srixon from there company for some reason the irons are 3/4 to 1/2 longer then Callaway, Talyormade,
So I have the 223s….I like ‘em but you fall off a cliff when you get to the 8 iron down. Not only does the club change to basically a blade (221) but the lofts weaken as well. You end up with a 7i that goes 180 and an 8i if not struck well that goes 145. Obviously the Indian and not the arrow - but something to keep in mind when buying a progressive set. The dispersion will almost always be more because the technology is completely different. My beef is that 90 percent of the time I’m not hitting the 7i up….almost always driver then 8i down….so stuck in blade land for the most part. Gonna keep ‘em but will probably buy an easier sets thats a bit more accommodating. 223s are basically for 221 players that want some help…..not for JPX players looking to sample that next ambitious level. My.02
I would bend the 8-p down a degree or two to get the distances back in line. Obviously you could also go the other direction and weaken up the 7,6,5 the same amount. I'd personally do the 8-p strong so you don't feel like you need to swing so hard to get anything out of them. If it doesn't work, can always bend them back.
I use the Rode Wireless Go II. Works pretty consistently overall. Only had a couple times where it had an issue. I recommend if you use it, to record separate audio directly into the Rode and not connect it to the camera mic line. You have to sync it in post but I have fewer issues when doing it that way. Also most editing software has some sort of auto syncing function that makes it very simple.
They are really close. Maybe I put the forged as slightly more forgiving but honestly if you can hit one, you can hit the other. Probably comes down to looks and feel more than anything else.
Does mizuno automatically use lighter heads when you order clubs that are + 1/2" in length to keep the swing weight in the recommended range or is that something you would have to specify? My clubs in the past from callaway have had very heavy swing weight like D9 just because of the added length.
Yes, it can definitely be an iron shaft as long as it fits the hosel. Usually a good idea to go down one iron shaft from whatever hosel you are using. Example, if you have a 4 hybrid, I would use a 3i shaft.
Am I better off buying forged 921s or just save up for forged 923, as im not to sure if there is that much of a difference ? Im currently play titleist ap1 716

Pretty much everything will go longer now because they have stronger lofts. Trick is to find ones with enough loft to still hit it high along with farther.
