Venice

Venice, which is in northeastern Italy, is the capital of the Veneto region. A network of 472 bridges connects the city, which is spread across 126 islands separated by canals and large areas of open water. The shallow Venetian Lagoon, an enclosed bay between the mouths of the Piave and Po rivers, is home to the islands. The ancient Veneti people, who lived in the area by the tenth century BC, are the source of the name. In addition to serving as a staging ground for the Crusades and the Battle of Lepanto, it was a significant hub for trade, particularly in the areas of silk, grain, spices and art from the 13th century to the end of the 17th century. It was also a great naval and financial power during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
