Dr. William Craig & John Lovell discuss God, and Culture

  • John Lovell interviews Dr. William Lane Craig -- one of the world's foremost Christian philosophers, apologists, and authors. As Warrior Poets are lovers and defenders of truth, it is critically important that we know what we believe really is true. If we do not do adequate work as warrior philosophers, we may not really do the work of discovering what is really worth living and dying for.

    As Christian PhD physicist, I have encountered more believers than I had anticipated. Ultimately, if a physicist is consistent with himself, he will come to a point were he must accept either unscientific theories like the multiverse concept to explain the origin of everything or that God does exist and is the Creator of all. I believe the evidence points to the later.

    There's only been once where I truly knew that if I didn't act, someone would die and I would be a destroyed human being. But I also knew that if I did act, both of us could die. My prayer was "God this is you" and I didn't hesitate. Everything returned out ok and we both went home to our families. That one moment may have been the culmination of my existence, but God is good and Jesus is my Lord. What I love most about Jesus is that he came to heal the sick, not to save the riotous.

      A very encouraging talk. One is neither irrational, nor alone in believing in God!
      You brought out his excellence and it was obvious that this was a relaxed and thus fruitful discussion.
      I do however think that the importance of books, even if on a non scholary level, for popularising the current understanding of the research field was overemphasised. I think social media in its various forms play a very large role in helping people discover new ideas only to then seek out books. On TH-cam, for instance, one can be exposed to a large variety of ideas in a short time and at no expense.

    Been thinking about this a lot lately when considering how a Christian justifies going to war against tyranny, not on the orders of others, but because it's the moral thing to do (if in fact going to war against tyranny is moral).

    • @davekendall1338
      @davekendall1338 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @UCAvyJPYzixWcspvSUX_MaeQ I'm open to the idea of it being moral, but need some convincing from the Christian side. There are a couple of Biblical passages that come to mind that seem to suggest fighting a tyrannical government is not something Christ calls us to do. For instance, we are called to submit to the government in Romans. When Christ tells the disciples to sell their cloaks and purchase swords, it is to justify his arrest by the authorities. Even though they're armed, he rebukes Peter for using his sword.
      Additionally, Christians throughout history have suffered and died peacefully, going to their deaths willingly rather than fighting back. The faith of these martyrs in the life to come gives witness to the power of Christ.
      What I don't see much of, especially in the New Testament, is Christ calling for his followers to go to war, despite the fact that at the time of his ministry the Romans were foreign occupiers.

      @PatrickHenry-pz1pd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davekendall1338 that Bible verse of submitting to the government is quite obvious as it means IF the government is godly.. ours clearly isn’t... remember Christ rose up Joshua and Caleb to go kill men, women and children to protect life. Dr. Craig… ugh. This guy has been trounced in so many debates, discussions, etc, it’ll make your head-spin. TH-cam is CHOCK-A-BLOCK full of content about this guy’s short comings. Almost never answers a direct question and will resort to comments, instead of quantifiable, tangible and empirical data. I love your channel John, but this guy… geez.

      I’ve seen many, many hours of this guy debating and I’ve only seen him winning 🤷🏻‍♂️
      Mollinism isn’t something I embrace, so I’m definitely not in agreement with him on all things, but man, I see him as a great force for Christian theism

      @@WarriorPoetSociety Amen. We need to align with those that share our value to build a foundation of trust within. He is an honorable apologist that doesn't teach heresy so that makes him my brother and son to my father. 😁

    I think we all would do something IMMEDIATELY if one of our loved ones was being raped, attacked etc right in front of us. Of course, right? So why do we allow the same thing to happen to us via the way these governments, giant corporations, corrupt politicians treat us? Just because it happens much more slowly and isn't an IMMEDIATE threat? I think we really need to ask ourselves when enough is enough..

    Really appreciate Dr Craig.
    Would also love to hear his thoughts on areas he not so often talks about (most likely because he wants to focus on his key areas of expertise) such as;
    - what are the characteristics of being a man of God
    - finding your purpose or specialty (Does this require only ministry work or bringing the ministry into whichever area a person personally chooses)
    - engaging with the culture (Politics, entertainment, art, etc.) but not becoming a part of that culture
    - building and maintaing a personal relationship with God in addition to the intellectual (I'm sure the intellectual is an element of that)
    There are probably more areas of interest that I'm forgetting but having heard a lot of the arguments and defenses of the existence of God I'm interested in his philosophy of applying these truths in his life and living them out in the world

    thanks for the message john, i follow a wide variety of philosophers of which I include you among them, as well as Dr Craig that you have introduced me to, but also Doshin Roshi (integral zen) and Ken Wilbur as well as a slew of Christian theologists and apologists. your outlook is less esoteric imo, and grounded in practical life applications.

    Hey John you really have me thinking, have you ever considered doing children's classes? For all I know you may already do them but your ability to speak with urgency yet no profanity or fear mongering really really impresses me. I can only teach my Son so much, and you have such a breadth of knowledge. If you don't currently please consider.

    John, appreciate all that you are doing with WPS and elsewhere. Thanks for keeping it real and keeping King Jesus at the center. I agree that a true warrior is more than brawn and brute strength. The mind must be open (and closed). This space between the ears connected with that which is a foot lower is the place where the true warriors develop, defend and deliver from.
