    I'm growing Sugar baby and something started to take out my plant a while back but the first watermelon that developed is still there. I flipped it over recently to notice little tiny grubs and even a baby worm eating along the rind, so I laid it on a different side. I've been doing that for a week or two. I haven't reached the harvest "date" from the packet, a couple more weeks, but I didn't noticed the rind where it is light in color from laying on dirt (but remember i keep flipping and moving it) is soft when I push on it. Is this a sign that it's not ripe yet? I'm thinking and hoping so. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! It really helps and is encouraging.

    I'm growing blacktail mountain and I've got three that have the dark yellow on the bottom, two have brown dried up tendril and the third still has a green tendril. I'm not sure whether to leave the third one longer or not.

    I’ve always loved your watermelon videos! I’m growing a ton this year in 20 gallon grow bags, do you recommend trellising ? I have some space for them to sprawl out.

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can trellis them or let them sprawl. If I had the extra space, I would just let them sprawl. Thanks so much for watching!

    Nice harvest! I harvested two strawberry watermelons but they weren't very sweet. I think I need to water them less but it's over 100 degrees here almost daily.

    Great video!
    Question: do u save ur melon seeds & use them for planting the following year?
    Tks for sharing ☺️

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't save them because I grow more than one variety. Melons cross pollinate easily. If you are growing one variety, you could definitely save seeds and grow the same variety again next year. Just be sure you are saving seeds from an open pollinated or heirloom variety.

    What size of your container?

  • @daniellegrandpa

    Since you get more blossoms per plant than one, how do you determine or handle the other blossoms that may produce a fruit?

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  ปีที่แล้ว

      Your plant will only grow the amount of fruit it can handle. In my growing conditions, it tends to be two watermelons per plant, or one really big one, occasionally three melons. I have noticed sometimes a small fruit will form, grow just a little, and then rot off. I usually just let my plant do its thing. 🌱

  • @richardcrossen9480

    Good video. Could you provide the average days to ripening for each variety?

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For Ali Baba I have 85-90 days written down and for Blacktail Mountain 75 days. Usually it's on the back of your seed packet, different seed companies may have different estimates. I count dtm from the time I put the plant in the garden. I start my seeds indoors about 4 weeks before I plant them in the garden.

    How many watermelon fruits can you get growing in a container?

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my personal experience, 1 or 2. Doesn't mean you can't get more. I would say 2-3 max, just depends on your growing conditons, container size, climate, rain, disease pressure, etc. With my in ground plants I usually get 1-3 fruits per plant. When my plants only produce one, it tends to be a big watermelon.

    • @butette
      @butette 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChristasGarden Appreciate the reply. Seems like a lot of work for one watermelon per container but I am going to give it a shot just to learn. You explain things really well!

  • @alyxpattison9451
    @alyxpattison9451 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So does a watermelon plant in a container only produce one watermelon?

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that would depend on certain factors in your growing area such as how long your growing season is, summer temps, plant diseases, etc. My watermelon plants, that are growing directly in the ground only produce 1-3 watermelons per season. Getting three is pretty rare. In containers, my plants produce 1 or 2.
