He walked around the question - California was not officially in a drought. These conditions are not abnormal in California considering they have major forest fires yearly. Not having water and not mitigating the dried shrubs and downed dry trees for years in the forests, is a major reason this happens. This very situation was also warned of many years ago to a deaf government that collects more taxes than almost every state in the USA. This is government mismanagement to the highest degree and they have just been lucky for years that this didn't happen sooner.
Fire chief was summon to mayor Bass office yesterday, fire chief commented on the 17 million budget cut from fire fighters not enough fire fighters, fire trucks, many, many fire trucks and ambulances were not used, because city didn't want to hire maintenance workers to fix them , wonder if she still has a job?
If a place doesn’t have enough money to cover bills they have to start cutting someplace and I’m sure the fire departments weren’t the only ones to be cut.. wake up you idiot
You also left out the part where the chief herself said that 1000 fire trucks wouldn’t have prevented the fire nor contained it any sooner. Please use the full context of the interview and not just the shiny parts you like.
The 17 million dollars removed from the budget is just 2 percent of 910-million-dollar budget. Fire and police depts never have enough money or resources. They always blame the lack of resources as the excuse.
What’s the best way to evacuate an area that is going to be impacted by a world changing event without causing mass panic? You cover it up with a wildfire do that way people will not only evacuate in order but they will not return immediately
Johnny Carson was constantly talking about the Santa Ana winds. This is not a new phenomenon. These fires have been happening for centuries. There's just people living all over and when you get the right conditions it's going to happen. Just like Mexico, Beach was destroyed by a category 5 hurricane and two weeks later you had a town in California that burned completely. All of this happened in the '90s as well. There were fires in Oakland. Anyone remembers that early 2000s. You don't win a fight against some wildfire with 60 80 mile our winds behind it. How many of you have even stood in an 80 mile an hour wind?
Nobody ever said that Santa Ana winds were unusual, but what is unusual is for a severe drought to be happening at the same time. The Los Angeles area has received less than a quarter of an inch of rain since last May so the vegetation was extremely dry. The increasing drought is a direct consequence of climate change which sadly many people are still denial about despite the mountain of evidence out there.
Wow. So horrific. This is exactly why our neighbors and ourselves all cleaned up our woodlands around here. We had a 6-wk drought last summer and burn ban which made us think it was time to clean up brush and remove downed trees. I also stepped up my own personal water catchment. You just never know.
I remembered last February that Southern California had a huge Atmosphere River that flooded the areas burnt down and I know there were reservoirs overflowing, was it so dry and hot that they all just evaporated ?

Then you had 20% of the fire hydrants that had no water source even before the fires started.
That horrific orange glow over the LA area is terrifying to see. I'm so sorry for all the people and animals caught up in this. Hopefully, if the stories that this has been partly caused by legislation banning proper vegetation controls and that the same buerocrats are preventing fire appliances arriving to help from being allowed to operate are true, there will be a major change in the way this state operates in the very immediate future.
Rebuilt discussion.... changing new building codes / permits to brick style homes with metal roofs, concrete based hardiboard facia and a restrictive landscape regulation....
Yes, fires happen in these conditions, which can arise anytime of year. We just keep an eye on the humidity and winds and warning signs. Never seen anything this bad, having lived in SoCal since 1969.
This was released on Friday January 10th “On Thursday, a spokesperson for L.A. City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield, who was budget chair last year, said the city increased the fire department’s overall budget by approximately $53 million in the current fiscal year. However, $76 million - intended to pay for fire department personnel - was placed in a fund separate from the fire department’s regular account when the budget was adopted because contract negotiations with department employees were still taking place at the time.” As a result, if you just compare the LAFD’s budget last year to this year’s, it looks like it went down $23M. But that’s because when the budget was adopted last May or June, the city was still negotiating those new contracts. The $76M that was set aside in a separate account ultimately was moved once the MOUs were finalized.
For me the saddest thing about all this was not the people who lost everything, what made me sad was all the loss of animal species that were there, dying like that. This broke my entire heart
Ironic that there is no water available when LA is on the Ocean. " Water water everywhere and all the boards did shrink. Water water everywhere and not a drop to drink."
The fires broke out simultaneously in different areas, assuring that the fire departments would be overwhelmed. Were the fires started intentionally? Who would stand to gain financially from the mass destruction of property? Venture capital groups will be buying this real estate for pennies on the dollar.
Black Rock will buy it all at 10 cents on the dollar. Distressed uninsured mega houses and properties. People have Stockholm Syndrome and refuse to notice the truth.
They may not gain financially but may I suggest a terrorist cell from the thousands of terrorists that the Dems have allowed and even invited into America?
Omg. There is video of the Eaton fire starting from sparks from a high voltage power line in the foothills. Because of the WIND the fire quickly spread. Embers from the fire are carried in the wind and when they drop new fires are started. Embers from those new fires are carried in the wind starting even more fires. This is not some VC master plan. Maybe open a Crack in the window foil.
Fire doesn’t typically burn concrete or asphalt so it may not cross the highway. It’s hard to even say this because it’s pretty windy there and if there are cracks in the highway, it can cross
What’s emerging is a national tragedy. It’s hard to watch and take in. So, so sorry for everyone involved. The firefighters trying to control, putting their live at risk too. (with what appears to be lack of the much needed equipment) There will be time to take stock and lay blame, but for the moment I’m hoping this disaster can be controlled and stopped before anymore more lives are lost.
Asphalt roofing is the reason California's fires were so destructive... same with Hawaii. Most homes in USA have asphalt roofing. It performs well until heated, then it releases flammable fumes.
It's the eucalyptus trees they planted all over CA. They're highly flammable and meant to adapt to fire prone areas, they're evolutionary designed to intentionally burn and they come back and dominate the landscape after fires. It's why the fires are so bad in CA now.
i am not an expert. judging from how fires have occurred here in northern California, arson seems quite possible in some of these fires. with almost 10% of the population of the state under evacuation orders this is something everyone needs to watch for.
Why don't we have a Federal firefighting department with a hundred water bombers and choppers? Oh, Congress would rather spend $880 billion a year on Defense that doesn't save a single citizen's life.
Be realistic. With the winds this fire was out of control very quickly. There was no chance to do too much to stop it. Fires happen in California. It is very dry particularly this year.
This is not the time to be pointing fingers. Showing Some Compassion, should be the Humane Response. People have lost their lives, leaving family and friends, not only suffering from the devastation of the fires, but losing loved ones. Everyone caught in California's Fires are Suffering . @@timblack2764 California had plenty of rain this year. Enough to fill the empty reservoir several times. It also has enough melted snow to help contain the fires. It was discharged to the sea to help the smelt. The Palisades reservoir was dry and offline. You would think they would conserve water for fires. Is this there first big fire?????
They just fired their own first openly gay female fire chief because she dared speak the truth. And she said the mayor failed the city. The people litterally voted to build a reservoir 8 years ago and nothing was built. The water was wasted. The opposite of environmentalism. LA is now the most polluted city in the nation! The trees, the homes, and innocent lives of the trapped people and the little animals in the wild, all burned! Criminal!
Ok if it wasn't arson then that means it's happend on accident. If it can spread like that on accident then it can spread like this if someone did it on purpose
LA County is a really pine barrens, not lush forests like Central and NoCal...it is desert with man planted shrubs and trees, and naturally growing scrub that is naturally kindling. WInds, hot, little water, and high density housing. Car backfire can spark a fire in LA during droughts.
Cars don't backfire. When was the last time you heard a car backfire? 1965? That just deflects from the actual controllable causes. Poor maintenance of power lines, and human activities like arson, backyard burning and campfires.
I prey for everyone involved! I hope that they get to the bottom of this mess. If anyone was involved in starting any of those fires I hope they are caught and brought to justice! For those who have lost everything including life!
And the rain they did get they dumped into the ocean. They were supposed to build a reservoir but didn't - against the wil of the people who voted for a reservoir. It's crazy how some LA residents will still blame others for the failings of their own politicians - even when they know deep down there is nobody else to blame.

The reality is that these sorts of devastating fires are almost certain to happen periodically. Southern California is naturally arid, and water has to be pumped to the region from elsewhere to meet basic needs. Many areas were overdeveloped, via a mix of meeting demand for housing newcomers to the state and greed. Many houses in the worst hit areas are often surrounded by vegetation that burns easily. And finally, people like to build in areas distant from more urban areas, but the price of that is it is harder to pump water to these hillside/hilltop spreads. The solution is generally simple - don't overdevelop and don't build in areas especially vulnerable to fires. It is the same principle that should be followed in states hit by hurricanes - there are some areas you should not build in in the first place. Sadly, once this is over, just like in the hurricane states, people will build right back in the vulnerable areas. Insurance rates are through the roof for this reason. Sorry to see the partisan ghouls out on this one. A tragedy is a tragedy, whether it is in a red state (Hurricane Katrina) or blue state (LA fires right now).

Fires are ALWAYS weird since they are influenced not only by the dry and windy conditions, but create their own internal fire storms. The hotter they are the weirder they get.

I lived in LA Riverside County and served on fire lines. Terraine in this area is a firefighting nightmare. It seems California governor and LA leaders became completely oblivious to danger and focused on PC ideas verses actually useful planning. However, voters elected them not once, but I believe three times. If they are that incompetent than what does that say for you as a voter voting for them. We left California due to hi business taxes, over regulation, etc. clear back in the mid 1980's. Maybe this will get you to think why we terrible conservatives focus more on real issues and not made-up causes. Sadly, my insurance rates will go up as your massive disaster bill is spread out by companies. Learn!

Imagine being China and knowing you can destroy millions of dollars of US property, if not billions, just by sending a single guy with some lighter fluid across the southern border.
Who will insure those areas now? No one. Now only buyers with cash will be able to build there. Who has cash? Corporations, especially those from out of the country like China, India, the Middle East. They take over America’s major cities and prime locations without ever firing a shot.
They don't need to send anyone, just pay some kid in the projects a couple of bucks and give him a George Floyd t-shirt.

It's a sad commentary on the state of the world when someone posts a fictional comment about the cause of these fires and pretends as though it is realistic, but has zero evidence for making the statement!! 🙄
What countries are helping us?
Canada
Canada and Mexico, your dear neighbours
At least three provinces in Canada. British Colombia, Alberta, and Ontario. Looks like America is not self sufficient after all....eh Trump? You need Canada as much as we need you.
Canada frequently helps the US with disasters. Hydro crews help in Florida after the hurricanes etc.

She might have enough constitutes left to vote her out.
She does still have her job
The winds here were never 80-100mph like how they were on the 1st day of the fires. I've been in L.A. 4 decades.

This was released on Friday January 10th
“On Thursday, a spokesperson for L.A. City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield, who was budget chair last year, said the city increased the fire department’s overall budget by approximately $53 million in the current fiscal year. However, $76 million - intended to pay for fire department personnel - was placed in a fund separate from the fire department’s regular account when the budget was adopted because contract negotiations with department employees were still taking place at the time.”
As a result, if you just compare the LAFD’s budget last year to this year’s, it looks like it went down $23M. But that’s because when the budget was adopted last May or June, the city was still negotiating those new contracts. The $76M that was set aside in a separate account ultimately was moved once the MOUs were finalized.

Omg. There is video of the Eaton fire starting from sparks from a high voltage power line in the foothills. Because of the WIND the fire quickly spread. Asphalt roofing is the reason California's fires were so destructive... same with Hawaii. Most homes in USA have asphalt roofing. It performs well until heated, then it releases flammable fumes.
When fires get that bad the temperature can reach 5000 degrees and the only thing that will put it out is when there’s nothing left to burn.
🤨 hmm didn’t know
It's the eucalyptus trees they planted all over CA. They're highly flammable and meant to adapt to fire prone areas, they're evolutionary designed to intentionally burn and they come back and dominate the landscape after fires. It's why the fires are so bad in CA now.

@rtile9053 No. It was under evaluation orders but it did not catch on fire. They'll magically come up with water before they let that happen.
