This was a bit of a walk down memory lane. I remember the ram doubler software but back then it was very flakey. The Apple 2 software relied heavily on paging which made their software more powerful and robust. The question comes down to this, how much memory do you need? I agree with Linus, just buy more.
Or use less!! With browsers there are add-ons that free idle tabs, and closing programs is a good idea: things like Thunderbird gradually grow, as do google and firefox tabs - in linux/mac a small 'top' based script can close the worst offenders when required..!

I don't really care if he makes "normal videos" anymore, those jokes were enough to make for a permenant turnoff.
His "normal" videos are actually not bad .... and the fake ones are quite obvious.
Near the beginning of the video when talking about virtual ram and how it acts as slow ram there are 2 things i would say, 1. i do not recommend letting the system manage virtual ram automatically. If you look into the default details this will only allow a maximum of about 300mb of virtual ram which is way too small. I recommend manually setting your virtual ram, in the setting you choose the minimum and maximum set your minimum AND maximum both to EXACTLY the same size as your total physical ram. Do this once on each physical drive you have. This will give you the most bang for your buck on virtual ram and it helps. The more physical drives you have in with those settings the faster your virtual ram will work since each drive has its own independent speed and it can store half of something on 1 and the other half of something on the other to cut load time in half or more depending on the number of physical drives. 2. Also an important detail about the speed of virtual ram is the hard drive speed is the virtual ram speed so the faster your hard drives can read and right the faster the virtual ram will be.
Reason for this: If the virtual ram min-max is set to a variable amount, it starts at the min and expands to the max if needed and each time it expands that requires CPU use so it can drop frame rates in a game for example, so by setting the min and the max to the same number you get a lot less kicks to the CPU since the system will never have to allot more virtual ram on the fly. Also having the amount set to the same as your physical ram gives your system somewhere to dump the ram if an error occurred and that dump can handle the entire load without a blue screen so it can make your system more stable having enough virtual ram to eat all the data in your entire physical ram no matter how much it has. If you do this on a normal hard drive that isn't SSD i recommend optimising/defraging the disc after you set the virtual ram and restart the computer so it can be as fast as possible. All in all hes right though there is no better solution than to just simply replace/add more ram chips.

I doubled my RAM by adding DIMMs that were twice the capacity. Works every time.
I find it incredibly ironic that my system crashed while watching this video and the cause turned out to be a bad DIMM I just bought off eBay.

That must be bad luck :(. I buy all of my memory used, even the high performance HyperX Impact memory in my gaming laptop and it's almost always been good. Any crashes from RAM upgrades have usually been fixed with alcohol rub or contact cleaner on the memory pins and compressed air in the DIMM slots
A pencil eraser on the DIMM contact points might solve your issue, not the hard side though, also as pointed below rubbing alcohol and compressed air in the slots but try not to blow to much cause condensation occurs easier than you think, I usually do the first burst on the floor and then short bursts on the sockets.
I tried rubbing alcohol on the ram contact point and it worked like a charm, now i have linux netbook running off usb stick.
You know it might worth to try cleaning the contact
I spent an hour double checking everything, because I upgraded the processor just before the RAM. I was able to isolate the problem to a single dimm by testing each slot with a good tested dimm, then trying pairs of dimms until I found a pair that failed, then trying just 1 dimm in that pair. Once I found the dimm that tested bad, I swapped it into multiple slots and ran the test, each time it failed with the same bit patterns. For 2 given addresses in the dimm, it had the high bit stuck high in one nibble and the low bit stuck high in another nibble. If the problem were caused by contacts, I would get errors in more than just 2 bits in the dimm's address space. I contacted the seller and requested a refund for the dimm and concurrently ordered a replacement from Amazon. Yes, they won't all be part of a matched 32GB set (I don't know if they still match them these days, but back in 2011 they did). The seller granted the refund and was kind.

Maxthon and Vivaldi are based on Chromium I think. I've used SRWare Iron for a few years now and think it's pretty great but still a memory hoggish due to Chromium core.

It'd be funny if that happened to someone right then. My laptop has 8 GBs of RAM, and a 1 TB HDD, and it goes REEEEEAAAAALLLY slow after I actually get logged in. But here's the kicker: I have ONLY essential progams for Startup, + Discord. But I THINK the reason it goes slow at startup is because it has an HDD. Really want an SSD either way, HDD at fault or not. Heck, if I ever do get an SSD, you can have my hard drive!

I actually recommend using SSD as RAM. I have a laptop with 8GB and a 1TB HDD, and since I don't have many files I have a smaller SSD but 64GB of RAM. I promise you, it works (but it does depend on how fast your SSD is)

5:55 I used to CRAVE an adapter like that for my first PC (an HP Windows Me desktop with 64 MB PC100 SDRAM that could be maxed out with the mobo's limit of 512 MB), but I wanted one that could hold 2 or more desktop DIMMs on a cheap PCB module that plugs into the mobo socket for the same class of sdram, so the RAM chips wouldn't have to be thrown out or recycled. For example, packing 2 64 MB DIMMs and a 128 MB DIMM into an adapter on one slot and a regular 256 MB DIMM into the other slot.
I wonder if there's anything like that on the market for DDR2 or DDR3 DIMMs today.

well, this was a great video and very straight forward, would there be any way to add RAM for an inboard RAM in a Laptop? have a Lenovo S940 that I would have loved to get the 16 but for budget, the issue is I got the i7, 500G, 8 ram one. (FHD not the 4K ) .

Nicholas Rodriguez SSD's are expensive and always have been, it's just a hard piece of tech to make, whereas DRAM is relatively cheap to make, but inflation and demand have driven the prices up.

I bought a 4gb stick of ram for my core2 duo yesterday. I was amazed that games were running so much better and were loading more textures without any changes to graphics settings. Yeah I know it is still crap but I'm poor.
If you haven't done so already, replacing a rust spinner with an SSD will make a nice difference. No need to buy new, look for quality used such as a Samsung 840 Pro.
In the bucket list but I can get an old core i5 subsystem with ram and some storage for a bit more money, I think for now that will be a better value improvement.
My windows performance isn't too shabby on the 3.08MHz dual core. My poor GFX card is also due for replacement... 512mb Nividea 9800gt

You can get a fast core 2 duo or quad for like $20 and a cheap mobo with socket 754.

not really, i've bought my 1070 for 480 now it's 620 so about 25--30% more.
my 16gb ram went up from 87 to 190 so about 120% more or so.

The temporary memory storage increase but not the speed. A RAM invented to deliver data with very high speed while a pendrive dont have the same component like RAM does. Get a good RAM will be better.
