    Smart cubes are a huge innovation that would be fun to have applied to other events. I think eventually they could become comp legal and some future day maybe even comp required.

      Yeah, smart cubes should hopefully get to a point where they are more realistic and fun to use.

    If there's a company who's willing to make a budget smart cube, you can already tell, that will be the biggest innovation in cube history.

    While cubes are similar and generally have similar features, even on 3x3s, the mechanism is different, the cubes feel noticeably different. Ultimately there is a limit with how much you can improve a 3x3, modern 3x3s corner cut everywhere, they do pretty much exactly one turn per flick and then autocorrect every misalignment, there isn't much more improvement to be made but different cubers are going to prefer slightly different mechanisms and feelings of cubes and that is why new cubes will keep getting released.

    • @UK_Cuber
      @UK_Cuber  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, each different brand is naturally going to have a different feeling and so cubes will keep getting released but for the most part, the feelings within brands aren't changing, which is a shame.

      @speedcubingdotorg 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@UK_Cuberyes, they are broadly similar but what can really change? There has to come a point where they can't really do much to improve the cube and there isn't really going to be a way of making a cube that is radically different but still a good speedcube and wca legal

    • @UK_Cuber
      @UK_Cuber  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No problem, for that sort of upgrade, I would do it because of how old the Air SM is now. The 12 will be so much better!

    • @vulcaniel9348
      @vulcaniel9348 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The air is just really old, barely no tech in it compared to curent cubes, any recent flagship cube and even some budget ones will be better.
      The Tornado V3, Gan 12m and the Weilong V9 are some of the best options right now, but if you are looking for a more budget friendly cube, the RS3M V5 and the Guhong Pro M are really great options.

    bruh, you cant say all of the cubes in recent history feel similar. Theres a reason why people main a cube over the other because they feel different from the other. Otherwise we'd all be maining an RS3M 2020 and no one in the community would bother to do cube reviews ever again.

      @@UK_Cuberi agree with both of you. There are very subtle differences between different lines of cubes and different brands, but ultimately the differences don’t warrant an upgrade for the majority of speedcubers. I’ve had the luxury of getting most of the new releases from 2022-23, and while I can notice very small differences, even between rs3ms and weilongs and GAN cubes, the biggest differences by far come from setup changes. And once you get used to a different cube and set it up, it doesn’t take long for it to give you your best performances. I could easily main most of the cubes in my collection if i set them up accordingly and get used to how they turn, so is there really a reason for anyone to get all these different cubes when any one of them can give you everything you need? Maybe if you’re a world class speedcuber and every millisecond makes a difference. Otherwise I don’t think so.
      And yeah it’s almost sad to see no new cube review videos, when they’ve been so frequent over the last decade. But again, there’s no point in making new reviews if we’ve reached an innovation plateau, meaning every subsequent cube has no major improvement on the last. Similar to modern smartphones or video game series like FIFA/Madden/NHL from EA sports.
      I’d love to see a new innovation in cubing hardware, though I feel like for 3x3 that’s not gonna happen for a while, except for smart cubes. It would be awesome if all the new 2023/4 cubes from moyu could have an identical-feeling smartcube equivalent, the same way GAN made the 12 ui. Other than that, I think most improvements and innovations will come in the bigger cubes or other events, like you mentioned. I feel like there’s still a lot of room for improvement there. Big cubes hardware is far behind 3x3 hardware. Imagine if we eventually got big smart cubes too. And layers that could turn smoothly and corner cut without popping.

  • @ErikBromley
    @ErikBromley 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I agree, but I've also noticed similarities across brands- for example, when borrowing my friend's TV3, I took it apart and noticed a major similarity to the WRM V9, they both have that wavy skirt on the centres, corners with a long stock and single larger track, and edges with a cutout for the centre skirts. Looking at other cubes I started to see this trend more and more... I don't know if it's plagiarism, and even if it is, the minute differences in design can still make such hugely differing products. Still, it's a bit unnerving to see.
    I also think 20-magnet ball cores may be the next big innovation in cubing; from the 3 or 4 I've tried in various 3x3s, they have a MUCH more natural feel, with more light magnets being able to do the job of fewer stronger ones, and leading to a much more agreeable alignment sensation. Who knows, we could see the large core magnets of the 251M Leap come into it, that would be interesting...
    Anyway, hopefully MoYu calms down on all the 3x3s, and Gan doesn't just make another carbon-copy :(

    • @UK_Cuber
      @UK_Cuber  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, it's really surprising how similar piece design is for cubes made by completely different brands. Even if the 20-magnet ball core becomes the next big innovation, it's still not really a big change as ball core has been around for ages. They are just making improvements to this already proven design. And I also hope that GAN doesn't keep releasing the same cube every year!
      Thank you for taking the time to comment!

    • @UK_Cuber
      @UK_Cuber  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In terms of how significant they were to cubes, I would say that edge to core magnets were pretty unrecognised and people say that they can't feel any difference with them. Therefore, they aren't that big of an innovation.
