Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a TH-cam video every Tuesday & Friday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT on Twitch.

When I was a kid about 70 years ago the 'white sticks' actually had a red tip and were actually called 'candy cigarettes'. It was only after the anti-smoking campaign started that they stopped calling them this. We also were able to buy 'candy tobacco'. Long strings of coconut covered in cocoa powder and sugar.

In the UK they were called sweet cigarettes and came in a pack that looked like a pack of 10 cigarettes, even had a 'cigarette card' inside. There was also chewing gum ones wrapped in a 'cigarette' paper. The good old days when PC was a copper and Health & Safety didn't exist. Just common sense.

we had a school blazer as part of the uniform, and we used to put salted peanuts (from the school vending machine) it the inside pocket to eat in class!! we'd even ask to go to the loo (bathroom to you lol) to get more!
Where did the node 'stud' go to btw?

That was a fun video. When I was young a long long time ago, the candy sticks had red end so it looked like the cigarette was alight. We also had sweet tobacco, shreds of coconut covered in a brown sugary coating to make it look like rolling tobacco.

The knick knacks are hardly weird you can buy them in Tesco's and ASDA and Sainsbury's, in fact just about everywhere they are and mainstream snack if there is such a thing, the waste candy sticks used to be sold as sweet cigarettes and with marketed towards children as such, the best shandy in a can comes from Bass breweries, it comes from 50s and 60s English culture where children always wanted to try adult things so a whole generation grew up on imitation cigarettes and booze such as shandy and ginger beer

I actually once used those candy sticks as prop cigarettes in a school drama lesson 😆
Also, don't know if they still exist, but we used to have Fruit Winders. They had a cartoon strip on the paper, so you'd have to eat the sweet to read the comic. I think there were double flavour ones too (2 half width strips on the same roll).

I remember thinking in that video that I was sad for you that you tried the other two flavours but didn't try the rib n saucy cos you thought it wouldn't taste good. It's the best flavour and so I am glad that you finally got around to trying it!

Hi Alanna, that was so funny , Camel Balls 😅 I remember watching that early video when you tried Scampi & Lemon Nik Naks btw. Those white candy sticks , used to be "candy cigarettes" with a red tip ,flip top box and a small card of a cartoon character (real cigarettes often came with a card featuring wildlife or vintage cars etc).
Bass Shandy is the nicest 👍

    Hi Alana,
Thanks for another entertaining video. The blue raspberry rip roll reminds me of a candy I had when I was a kid called Fruit by the Foot. But if I remember correctly, I think it came in a plastic tape dispenser so it wouldn’t accidentally unroll into a big mess. I also ate Fruit Roll Ups as well. They unrolled into a sheet with perforated shapes like stars on it, that you would pull out from the sheet and eat, then you would be left with a stencil that you could use to draw shapes with, or just eat it. I always just ate it and I didn’t know anyone who actually used it as a stencil even though it was advertised on tv for that use.

I always enjoyed a nice bubblegum cigar when I was a kid. It was cigar shaped bubblegum jsyk. Our local grocery used to have them. You can find them on Amazon and some candy shops have them.
