Well hey, hey there Protonic Reversal devotees. Time for another episode, Steve Albini is back with us after a 106 episode break. Conan and Steve talk about: -Steve inadvertently ruining the “perfect run” of 9 continuous guests for the 100th episode of Protonic Reversal (not out of malice) -Winning the World Series of Poker (and why that might not be as impressive as it sounds) -Why recording records is still satisfying. -Fluffy coffee shop -A story of two competing magic shops -Thoughts on the internet equalizing things for music. -How this helps those passionate about music as opposed to those passionate about profit. -The hive mind as a filter. -The internet as a discovery tool for lost art. -Nick Drake’s mother. -Pegboy play South America -Streaming Services and the next logical progression of decentralization. -“how do you stop something that doesn’t store anything?” -Longevity in studios = flexibility -dislike of meritocracy as a term. -the value of record stores are the maniacs that work there -On hating nostalgia the first time -On the lack of appreciation of nuance and allegory in past compositions -Specifically: Prayer to God -Appropriation of past art and public figures for political end -the mind opening power of punk rock -You don’t make anything better by assuming your audience is stupid and dumbing down -Kindred spirits with the devout. -Making records with people who also record at home or in unorthodox ways. -Who gets told “no”? -Fleetwood Mac (and the like) helped create punk rock -Overdubs and Harmonies, and how they can be life lessons. -Who would Steve most like to record? -Rerecording In Color by Cheap Trick -The End of Radio is the end theme song for Protonic Reversal, the ideas behind the song.
Protonic Reversal is a live (and lively!) interview show that is streamed live and podcasted later, the podcast is the primary thing. It is possible you can hear superior audio at any of the other formats at the link above. The show is a conversation of amusing anecdotes, rocker ennui, why people do what they do & other assorted hijinx. It’s like “Inside the rocker’s studio” or something…

A few months ago a new coffee shop opened up three minutes from my house called Fluffy Coffee. I want to believe that its owners are Steve Albini fans.

At about 35:00 Albini introduces a box/app that sounds absolutely intriguing. I've never heard about any such thing. Does it exist? Was he wrong about its utility?

I think he was a tobacco smoker for much of his life but don't believe he was at the time of his death. Not sure when he quit if so.

Did you ever ask him about Sotos or Pure in one of these?

What? Absolutely not. Why on earth would I bring up the guy from Whitehouse? Salacious GOTCHA questions designed to fit a pre-conceived frame is the opposite of this show is. It's a weird and unfortunate associate and footnote being brought up by a LITERAL internet troll as if it is some major series of crimes that need to be answered for. The guy that has been pushing that isn't just an opportunistic defamer, he's a literal convicted criminal.

@@ProtonicReversal I'm unsure of the specific individual you're referencing bringing this up, I read about it independently from Reddit.
I asked because you'd spoken to him about some of the things he'd written about in the past, and stuff like Rapeman, but I haven't heard anyone mention his friendship with Sotos or his one-time endorsement of Pure mag. Steve seemed to want to own up to whatever he had said/done in the past, and I was hoping he'd spoken about these things specifically.

@@ProtonicReversal Sorry, but I completely diasgree. Whitehouse are a legendary band, and I don't think I have read what Albini actually thought of them, even though he recorded a few of their records (including producing Buyers Market). William Bennett also posted about him on his instagram, after learning the news on his passing. Steve's take on them would have been interesting, at the very least.
