Stephen King kinda started that trend he lived in Maine and just basicly used the place as a believable location makes the scary stuff feel more realistic.
The big thing you missed is that the town gives those it calls to it all the tools necessary to survive. All keys are obtainable through obvious means, guns and ammo are left sitting around, and medical supplies are abundant. The town wants you to survive. It's up to you to actually take the action to do it like James, or fall to your madness like Eddy.

silent hill is basically just a really extreme therapy session. where rather than facing your fears by talking about it. its presented to you as a monster that you have to kill. except if you do, bad things happens.
It's only a therapy session if you played SH2, or its ripoffs, Origins, Homecoming, Downpour, Shattered Memories, BM, etc. In 3 out of 4 games in the actual series it's not about therapy.

By itself, the town has become a place of penance for those with heavy guilt weighing on their souls, judging how much of that guilt is justified and how much they have left to pay to be redeemed, even if just in their own eyes.
Everybody seems to forget that in Silent Hil 1 and 4, the monsters weren't created from the player's character's mind. In SH1 the monsters were a manisfestation of Alessa's fears and hate, and the monsters you find in SH4 come from the mind of Walter Sullivan. Even some of the monsters you encounter in SH: Downpour, like the Dolls, come from the mind of Anne, not Murphy. So it's possible if u get stuck in Silent Hill, the monsters you'd see could be somebody else's manisfestations.

Not necessarily fears and hate, more so general subconscious, Alessa was fascinated by bugs, she collected them and learned about them, given the bugs in her room.
That's simple: cause Silent Hill's Other World is literally your own personal hell that consists of your worst repressed memories, phobias, insecurities and guilt that all assume a physical form to torture, maim and murder you. In Silent Hill, you're literally your worst enemy and is the only thing that causes suffering to yourself and others...

I've done this! Very easy way of stating every problem you've had and how it could be twisted and amplified into affecting your life in a negative way.
I've always like to think of monster designs related to my fears and negative emotions. I had one monster pop up in my head, a tall and slender creature. Only having one leg and when you look up there are faces, dead and alive ones screaming. A lump of these faces looking not really sad but just indifferent in emotion. It would draw you in by making crying noises but not a single trace of sadness in the creature's face. When you kill it all the faces smile very creepily while the body itself lays limp.

There is a way to survive silent hill, have no dark past, have no sins or bad thoughts and be pure of heart as the red god and yellow God will guide and warp the world to fit your misdeeds and "sins".
Nobody is like that. Everyone has pain, regrets, guilt and a deep seated fear in their hearts. And anyone who hasn't yet sinned in their life eventually will. It is inevitable.
I'm pretty sure you wont be tortured if you have a few sins or a few negative emotions. It's when you don't seek redemption and let them consume who you are
One of my demons would ironically be quite similar to Eddie from SH2. I was bullied in high school by a fat, pale, blonde sociopath with a victim complex that also happened to be a compulsive liar. Both to save his own skin and spread lies about me that somehow became the truth in other people's eyes.
something I find really cathartic is practicing my hand at metaphors and trying to turn feelings and traumas and anxieties into body horror monsters, and write little silent hill inspired poems about my trauma that equate some of my worst panic attacks with the anxiety that the series tries to foster, and the transitions to the other world.

You don't want to know the truth of what this is like nor what your mind will do to cope with it after the fact... self mutilation is now a problem I have to avoid with actual effort and a fucked up blurring of the line between pleasure and pain very real feeling hallucinations and worst of all somehow the fact it all just gets worked into a "Normal" daily life and the constant fear of becoming some fucked up serial killer due to a new sadistic streak
Heard someone saying that only those with 'pure' inocent heart would be able to not go into the hells of Silent Hill and just experience the normal state of the town, but, how pure do you have to be? Some said that id be impossible to be pure enough to not get into the fog/other world, but it seems that you guys forget that both James and Mary visisted Silent Hill before the events of the game and didnt experience the powers of the town. Same to Henry, who visited the town multiple times before the events of SH4. They were full grown persons, unlike Laura, but they didnt experience the fog/other world. Thisnis cause the town on calls those with unresolved traumas or a heavy guilty, and forces them to go into those traumas in order to overcome them. Thats why James only entered the other world after he killes Mary, cause of his repressed guilt ans trauma. So, basically, only if you have a real heavy trauma or guilt to overcome (or if you're unlucky enough to get involved into someone else nightmare like Harry or Henry) you wouldnt experience any unnatural and would just see Silent Hill as a regular town
The cult from sh1 actually drove the original inhabitants away. It became an empty town now corrupted from the cult so yes you can go there and see nothing but a ghost town if you've done nothing horrifying, or if some crazy ritual like 1,3,or 4 is going down or if the town calls you like james or eddy you see horrific manifestations of your own mind or someone else's like alessa

I remember when I was younger I felt like it was a foregone conclusion that if I were ever trapped in Silent Hill, I'd shoot myself in the head as soon as I could find a gun. Looking back at that, I know I wouldn't be able to anymore and would attempt to survive but it's crazy how much conviction I had behind my solution back then. Like it was a no-brainer or something to the point that I couldn't imagine what possibly drove the main characters to endure. But yeah, as an adult, I just feel like surviving would be the "right" thing to do now. Weird.
Small thing, Cheryl and Heather are the same half of Alessa’s soul. After Cheryl reenters silent hill as a little kid she is reunited with Alessa and turned into another baby who Harry renamed Heather to keep her safe
I mean, you're not wrong, but that's not the entirety of it. Heather is, in essence, Alessa completely reborn. After Cheryl and Alessa reunite (Recombine?), after the Good(+) boss is defeated, she reincarnates herself to give her a better life.
You forgot about the little girl in Silent Hill 2. She doesn't see any monsters or the other rusted world like James does. Therefore there is a slim chance that you'll also have no fears to face or even issues that you worry about.
I thought that only happened to those with a pure heart, such as for example the innocence of a child, theyre the purest ones for their hearts havent been corrupted yet by the evils of the world and or wrong doings done unto them
I would argue you actually do have a good chance of surviving. The town seems to give you just enough to survive, it just comes down to do you want to survive.
Depends on the grade of your fears and guilt and your will to cope with your sins, even then not all endings in SH are happy, for example in SH2 the protagonist will never seen in the real world again according to SH4, and in SH4 people are still killed and his souls trapped in the hellish town
You definitely do! Silent Hill roots on it's Victims and helps them to try and accept what is happening and why! If you can't then you surely are dead but if you can then you are fine and will come out a better person!
I agree that SH never seems to want to kill you. It's not really about surviving, it's about questioning if you want to survive and understand what the hell is going on.
My friend & I kinda thought about this & we've come to the conclusion that: SH (the living srea) is a mix of one's crimes, guilt, fears, regrets, phobias, that's been personified. Its unique from person to person. The average person would have to be able to come to grips w/ those things to overcome them & maybe make it out. If they don't succumb to those things they'll hafta deal w/ the cult & the manifested monsters. Also, they may not have the means to escape that existence.
The most strongest group in Silent Hill is not The Order but the organization called Konami. They have the power to change anything they want while I stare in horror. I was in silent hill. The Place lured me. The worst monster I ever saw represented my fear of pachinko machines. At the end I wasn't able to escape. The place felt like it was trying to let me come to terms with Silent Hills being canceled. I couldn't conquer my inner fear and demons. I type this now for you guys to know the truth. Now if you reply to me, it will be too late because I'm about to drive myself into Toluca Lake where my intent is to die with a copy of PT by my side.
I always had the sense that Silent Hill never truly tried to kill its protagonists, like James for example, it was more about him coming to terms with what he did to his wife and his punishment was being put through that nightmare.

Silent Hill proves to make a point to those in it. You're right in saying that the town works towards people to accept their flaws and exit a better person. That being said while Silent Hill actually roots for it's Victims to succeed, They still very much can die if they don't accept what is happening or the message being given such as with the bad endings and with some characters in the series who meet their fate such as Eddie!
rockinonthemove Technically speaking, no one is a side character in silent hill. Its just that we can’t play its other visitors. Sure, it may seem that way since the story revolves around James but, characters such as Angela and Ed experience Silent Hill in their own way. Both of them have their own personalized hells to trekk and meander in and both have their own “executioners” or a presence like Pyramid Head that they must conquer. The only “side” character I could think of is Maria, but even then shes just a mirage; an illusion perpetuated by the town for James to confront his ill past and misdeeds.
Here’s something most people seem to get wrong though: out of all the original games Silent Hill 2 is the only one where the town makes the protagonists fears and traumas come to life to haunt them. Silent Hill’s nightmare world is Alessa’s, Silent Hill 3’s is Claudia’s, and Silent Hill 4’s is Walter’s. The misconception that your traumas and fears would come to life to antagonize you is the biggest one in the series. It only happens in 2 and then in the one side post Team Silent games because they all try to emulate 2 in some way.
In silent hill 2 we see that a persons nightmare world does not have to be exclusive to the person. the Protagonist in 1 goes into Alessa's world. I cant talk about 3, because i never played it and know very little of it. 4 is a weird one because it was shoehorned into being a silent hill game, Though it seems the way his nightmare world works is through invading it with others. Walter was a bit of a shut in, so invading his world with outsiders would go along with the theme a bit. Then the blame for them getting hurt is also on him as he brought them there even if unwillingly.
Silent hill three is also heather's. The game was originally going to be in the same vein as 2, with heather being someone who was raped and then became pregnant, presumably aborting the fetus and feeling guilty about it. That's why basically everything is either a dick, a vagina, or some form of body dismorphia embodied.

I’ve played the Silent Hill series for 14 years now and considered myself a pretty hardcore fan and DAMN this is the first time someone explained the Order in a way that made any damn sense.
People survive Silent Hill by learning the lessons it teaches them; If you've done something wrong or have a dark past, Silent Hill forces you to reconcile that aspect of yourself. The monsters are just projections of wrongdoings and/or bad emotions, so theyre only as bad as whatever brought you to Silent Hill in the first place. At least, that's my understanding.
And if we're to believe what Vincent implies in 3, they aren't really monsters. They're projections onto normal people. My theory is that there IS something weird going on with the area, but much of it is much more in your head than what is portrayed. Maybe it's a negative energy that latches on to those who are experiencing trauma or guilt?

honestly, that one is the easiest to see why you wouldn't survive. You'll die of Radiation poisoning, crushed in an anomaly, or eaten by any of the scary mutants(be it those Bloodsuckers, the invisible scary fuck no, or really any of the other hell monsters in the game).
We do know how he is slightly Psychic, which is why when he is looking for you he holds onto his mask and raises his hand moving his hand back and forth like he is scanning.
He's likely blinded due to whatever deformities his face has under that that thing. It's just that he's been doing this job for so long, blindness is no longer an obstacle... He can sense your fear, hear your accelerated heartbeat and panicked gasps for breath as you flee. And occasionally will rail mannequins and nurses in front of you just to fuck with your head because he finds that shit hilarious.
People who designed silent hill characters and put a brief story behind them, why those character are like this and how they should look according to their history; should be sent to asylum straight. I played those games when I was a kid, little to not more than 8-9 years old. Traumatized for life for sure.

When they did have actual weapons such as rifles. It was few to many. They were craftsman. However I do like the part in history they were arms dealers getting the weapons they needed. You can survive. You're stronger than you think. Whatever happened to you, wasn't your fault. Your past was fucked up by others, now you have the influence on your present and future. Fight for it. Get "revenge" on your bullies by being happy and not thinking about them. Think about yourself. You don't need to prove anything to anyone. Find some activity you love and just do it. You deserve much better, so don't deny it to yourself. Live for yourself, love yourself. It's perfectly ok to want something and have expectations in relations with others. Don't waste your time for people that make you unhappy or just use you. You're not "worse" than anyone, you don't need to feel like that.
Yea AJAJ is right if you want facts watch twin perfect's the real Silent Hill Experience, where they have facts and proof, because some of this stuff is Misinformation, and Tom hulett's uninformed idea in what Silent Hill is or how the spiritual power works, or how he copies the plot of Silent Hill 2 through his games like sh-0, homecoming, and downpour, and shattered Memories. That aside I find this video very entertaining nonetheless. And to be clear, I do not hate Tom Hewlett, and I wish him the best, I just think he wasn't the right man for the job, I just wish they would reunite team silent.

It makes you wonder what the people, who are outside the control of Silent Hill and are still in the real world, must be seeing when observing other characters connected to Silent Hill (like Laura or James' dad, Frank Sunderland)? SH3 has a line that Vincent says that makes people question whether there ever were monsters around, and if it was innocent bystanders all along (also one of my favorite mindfuck moments in anything pop culture-y)!
They’re in another dimension - another “layer” of reality. There’s no evidence to whatsoever to suggest that Vincent was telling the truth. He just likes to fuck with Heather. At most the Order would see monsters as Heavenly beings because the Otherworld is supposed to be their religion’s paradise. But we know this is not true because of whatever says when he calls Claudia out on her hubris. “You think THIS is the work of God? If this is God’s work I’d say she has lousy taste!”

I think I’d be screwed? I’ve got mental disorders and a mental disability. It could play on my fear of clowns, my unexplainable fear of water, anything from a horror movie. My mind would just be open water?! So when my mind goes into defensive mode, and I’ve found a moment of peace? I’ll still be shit out of luck because those monster will be waiting for that. I’m good with going to therapy and working through stuff in a safe environment . I know this isn’t real, but the thought of being put in a scenario close to it? Nope. Therapy is awesome. Being able to freely walk away from a situation to give yourself a minute? Awesome. I value those things.

In SH2, the town itself was not 100% hostile. It's just whether you have will to survive or not, and not drown into the town's illusions. Just like James did and Eddie didn't. It's like therapist, but hardcore.
The worst pary about Corpse Party is that escaping it doesn't just require you to survive and not fuck up even once, but it also requires your to rely on _other people_ to survive and not fuck up. Sometimes you wont even know if your actions (most likely made out of a sense of self preservation) are affecting another person's chances of survival, let alone if _their_ actions are currently affecting yours! That in itself is some serious bullshit.

Just to correct what you said in 7:55. Heather was not born when Alessa first split her soul. The two halfs were Alessa and Cheryl with the soulless living body of Alessa in the antique shop. Heather is born after Alessa is defeated and represents a full reincarnation of Alessa.
I live in my personal Silent Hill for about two years since my narcissistic ex-wife separated me from my daughter, after years of abuse and stuff. By now I am used to it and I have defeated almost all my demons. Im stronger now. I love the game saga btw and i play it only when im really sad. It helps me.

Everybody seems to forget that in Silent Hil 1 and 4, the monsters weren't created from the player's character's mind. In SH1 the monsters were a manisfestation of Alessa's fears and hate, and the monsters you find in SH4 come from the mind of Walter Sullivan. Even some of the monsters you encounter in SH: Downpour, like the Dolls, come from the mind of Anne, not Murphy. So it's possible if u get stuck in Silent Hill, the monsters you'd see could be somebody else's manisfestations.

I've always like to think of monster designs related to my fears and negative emotions. I had one monster pop up in my head, a tall and slender creature. Only having one leg and when you look up there are faces, dead and alive ones screaming. A lump of these faces looking not really sad but just indifferent in emotion. It would draw you in by making crying noises but not a single trace of sadness in the creature's face. When you kill it all the faces smile very creepily while the body itself lays limp.

Heard someone saying that only those with 'pure' inocent heart would be able to not go into the hells of Silent Hill and just experience the normal state of the town, but, how pure do you have to be? Some said that id be impossible to be pure enough to not get into the fog/other world, but it seems that you guys forget that both James and Mary visisted Silent Hill before the events of the game and didnt experience the powers of the town. Same to Henry, who visited the town multiple times before the events of SH4. They were full grown persons, unlike Laura, but they didnt experience the fog/other world. Thisnis cause the town on calls those with unresolved traumas or a heavy guilty, and forces them to go into those traumas in order to overcome them. Thats why James only entered the other world after he killes Mary, cause of his repressed guilt ans trauma. So, basically, only if you have a real heavy trauma or guilt to overcome (or if you're unlucky enough to get involved into someone else nightmare like Harry or Henry) you wouldnt experience any unnatural and would just see Silent Hill as a regular town

I remember when I was younger I felt like it was a foregone conclusion that if I were ever trapped in Silent Hill, I'd shoot myself in the head as soon as I could find a gun. Looking back at that, I know I wouldn't be able to anymore and would attempt to survive but it's crazy how much conviction I had behind my solution back then. Like it was a no-brainer or something to the point that I couldn't imagine what possibly drove the main characters to endure. I would argue you actually do have a good chance of surviving. The town seems to give you just enough to survive, it just comes down to do you want to survive.
Depends on the grade of your fears and guilt and your will to cope with your sins, even then not all endings in SH are happy, for example in SH2 the protagonist will never seen in the real world again according to SH4, and in SH4 people are still killed and his souls trapped in the hellish town
You definitely do! Silent Hill roots on it's Victims and helps them to try and accept what is happening and why! If you can't then you surely are dead but if you can then you are fine and will come out a better person!

My friend & I kinda thought about this & we've come to the conclusion that: SH (the living srea) is a mix of one's crimes, guilt, fears, regrets, phobias, that's been personified. Its unique from person to person. The average person would have to be able to come to grips w/ those things to overcome them & maybe make it out. If they don't succumb to those things they'll hafta deal w/ the cult & the manifested monsters. Also, they may not have the means to escape that existence.

I always had the sense that Silent Hill never truly tried to kill its protagonists, like James for example, it was more about him coming to terms with what he did to his wife and his punishment was being put through that nightmare.

Silent Hill proves to make a point to those in it. You're right in saying that the town works towards people to accept their flaws and exit a better person. That being said while Silent Hill actually roots for it's Victims to succeed, They still very much can die if they don't accept what is happening or the message being given such as with the bad endings and with some characters in the series who meet their fate such as Eddie!
The only exception is if you had connection with alessa/cheryl/heather and not part of the cult, then the town will actively try to kill you

Sure, it may seem that way since the story revolves around James but, characters such as Angela and Ed experience Silent Hill in their own way.
Both of them have their own personalized hells to trekk and meander in and both have their own “executioners” or a presence like Pyramid Head that they must conquer.
The only “side” character I could think of is Maria, but even then shes just a mirage; an illusion perpetuated by the town for James to confront his ill past and misdeeds.

Here’s something most people seem to get wrong though: out of all the original games Silent Hill 2 is the only one where the town makes the protagonists fears and traumas come to life to haunt them.
Silent Hill’s nightmare world is Alessa’s, Silent Hill 3’s is Claudia’s, and Silent Hill 4’s is Walter’s.
The misconception that your traumas and fears would come to life to antagonize you is the biggest one in the series. It only happens in 2 and then in the one side post Team Silent games because they all try to emulate 2 in some way.
In silent hill 2 we see that a persons nightmare world does not have to be exclusive to the person.
the Protagonist in 1 goes into Alessa's world.
I cant talk about 3, because i never played it and know very little of it.
4 is a weird one because it was shoehorned into being a silent hill game, Though it seems the way his nightmare world works is through invading it with others. Walter was a bit of a shut in, so invading his world with outsiders would go along with the theme a bit. Then the blame for them getting hurt is also on him as he brought them there even if unwillingly.

I’ve played the Silent Hill series for 14 years now and considered myself a pretty hardcore fan and DAMN this is the first time someone explained the Order in a way that made any damn sense.
People survive Silent Hill by learning the lessons it teaches them; If you've done something wrong or have a dark past, Silent Hill forces you to reconcile that aspect of yourself. The monsters are just projections of wrongdoings and/or bad emotions, so theyre only as bad as whatever brought you to Silent Hill in the first place. At least, that's my understanding.

The man in question was deaf and mute and did NOT hear the order to surrender his weapon. Not"bows" not any other weapon. But rifle, yes the Lakota Souix had rifles. Wounded Knee was totally unnecessary. The Lakota had surrendered several years prior. And the Cavalry officers there were abusive to them because of Little Big Horn and that blowhard Glory hound Custer getting what he deserved.

It wasn't a fair fight and despite my pale complexion I have several direct lineage to native Americans and my boyfriend is directly half.. He gives me stories from his grand parents and other elders. It's because the timeline they didn't have that. They were one with nature and typically didn't use those types of weapons. When they did have actual weapons such as rifles. It was few to many. They were craftsman. However I do like the part in history they were arms dealers getting the weapons they needed. I don't know if this was before this battle or after.

It is a hell tailored to you and the only way out is to learn to overcome the sin that brought you there in the first place.

The town is not encouraging you, the town is your nightmares taking form, wether you survive or comes to therms with your sins is your own inner strenght, the town doesn't want you to thrive, plus the weapons and guns are just there because of gameplay reasons, they're not really the town helping you.

Yea AJAJ is right if you want facts watch twin perfect's the real Silent Hill Experience, where they have facts and proof, because some of this stuff is Misinformation, and Tom hulett's uninformed idea in what Silent Hill is or how the spiritual power works, or how he copies the plot of Silent Hill 2 through his games like sh-0, homecoming, and downpour, and shattered Memories. That aside I find this video very entertaining nonetheless. And to be clear, I do not hate Tom Hewlett, and I wish him the best, I just think he wasn't the right man for the job, I just wish they would reunite team silent.

SH3 has a line that Vincent says that makes people question whether there ever were monsters around, and if it was innocent bystanders all along (also one of my favorite mindfuck moments in anything pop culture-y)!
They’re in another dimension - another “layer” of reality. There’s no evidence to whatsoever to suggest that Vincent was telling the truth. He just likes to fuck with Heather. At most the Order would see monsters as Heavenly beings because the Otherworld is supposed to be their religion’s paradise. But we know this is not true because of whatever says when he calls Claudia out on her hubris. “You think THIS is the work of God? If this is God’s work I’d say she has lousy taste!”

I think I’d be screwed? I’ve got mental disorders and a mental disability. It could play on my fear of clowns, my unexplainable fear of water, anything from a horror movie. My mind would just be open water?! So when my mind goes into defensive mode, and I’ve found a moment of peace? I’ll still be shit out of luck because those monster will be waiting for that.
I’m good with going to therapy and working through stuff in a safe environment . I know this isn’t real, but the thought of being put in a scenario close to it? Nope. Therapy is awesome. Being able to freely walk away from a situation to give yourself a minute? Awesome. I value those things.

In SH2, the town itself was not 100% hostile. It's just whether you have will to survive or not, and not drown into the town's illusions. Just like James did and Eddie didn't. It's like therapist, but hardcore.

The worst pary about Corpse Party is that escaping it doesn't just require you to survive and not fuck up even once, but it also requires your to rely on _other people_ to survive and not fuck up. Sometimes you wont even know if your actions (most likely made out of a sense of self preservation) are affecting another person's chances of survival, let alone if _their_ actions are currently affecting yours! That in itself is some serious bullshit.

I live in my personal Silent Hill for about two years since my narcissistic ex-wife separated me from my daughter, after years of abuse and stuff. By now I am used to it and I have defeated almost all my demons. Im stronger now. I love the game saga btw and i play it only when im really sad. It helps me.
