    2 LEGENDS! They have both left so much to their art. I met Maynard a few times at clinics and his touring shows. Jerry and I had our history too! He became a great friend, instructor, teacher and mentor....I wish I would have had more time with Jerry.....

    I actually had Maynard in my car when I picked him and his crew up at the hotel to bring him to our college to play a clinic and a concert with our stage band. I think that was 1986.

    Maynard was just such a great guy all around. Not just an icon of the trumpet but down to earth and friendly and respectful to all the people he encountered. No wonder he has such die hard and vocal fans!

    My experience is that a bugle is more difficult to play than a trumpet. I wonder if Maynard found that out as well, since he didn't sound as good on the bugle?

    • @sw6065
      @sw6065 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes he did.

    • @cairnman100
      @cairnman100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don’t think he realized the bugle was pitched in G. As you see when he grabbed it, he tried to continue on in the same overtone series as his trumpet. Tried to force pitches that weren’t there, realized it pretty quick and tapped out. 🤣

    • @chrispettus2532
      @chrispettus2532 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cairnman100 Exactly. It was like trying to play a concert B-flat scale on a trumpet without knowing that the third valve is stuck down. He was effectively trying to play a concert B-flat with the 3rd valve stuck down. His ear knew where the note should be but the overtone series slot wasn't there and he was forcing the pitch to where it should be with his lip.

  • @Nigelrathbone1
    @Nigelrathbone1 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm a brass player. It sounds like even Maynard needs to warm-up first to sound decent. I remember picking up a G-Contrabass bugle for the first time. It takes a little while to get used to the feel of the overtone partials on an instrument based on open G when you are accustomed to a Bb horn. Maynard somehow forced a Bb out of the G bugle played open because of his incredible ability.

  • @Nigelrathbone1
    @Nigelrathbone1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It sounds like Maynard was trying play notes not in the partial series of the key he was trying to play in. Takes a minute to get used to G bugle overtones when you're used to playing open overtones in the key of Bb.
