My dad called this one of the most satisfying sporting events he's ever been too. First qtr you got Pitt fans screaming in your face, by the 4th qtr you couldn't find one.

Derek, I was in fourth grade when this game occured and I vividly remember it for one major reason! My father and I (die-hard Penn State fans) had chosen to attend our local areas' HS Eastern Conf championship tilt in northeastern-Central PA that same day of the Penn State Pitt game and while it was going on, someone behind us in the stands had one of those old portable mini-TV's with the extended antenna and we could hear the action and would turn around to see what was happening! Pitt fans always ranked right up there back in the day as most arrogant and obnoxious, a few of whom happened to be listening in on that same TV action with us! Their silence as the game was winding down was one of poetic justice!

I was 9 ears old. And I remember this game. This was the game that I truly became a Penn State fan. Ended up going to college there. Best years of my pre marriage life.

I was just born less than 2 months prior to the game, so I don't remember it only stories from my dad being at game 😁

All those lineman for Penn State looked like they worked in an Altoona factory for like 10 years already.

Love this run of Pitt-PSU games! This, along with Army-Navy are my two favorite rivalries in college football. Pitt-PSU was just plain old fashion hate. Wish these teams played each year. Thank you once again for posting all of these games, and other schools as well. Enjoyed watching the 1982 SMU Arkansas broadcast a couple nights ago.

To any PSU fan over 50 years of age. The Game. PSU was #1 for weeks. Lost at Miami and Alabama in Consecutive games. But. This was one hell of a good team. Won natty the next year. In PA. 48 -14. Is seen on License plates.

Pitt lost so much personnel from the 1980 squad that finishing 11-1 and holding the No. 1 ranking in 1981 was so satisfying. Too bad the school hated athletics and said enough is enough and was happy to see Sherrill walk.

It is always great to beat the #1 team in the land, but when it is your arch enemy in the last game of the season......
Best regular season win ever for the Nittany Lions.

Morino became one of the all time great NFL quarterbacks, but Pittsburgh also had Bill Fralic, whom, I think, was a 1st round pick by the Atlanta Falcons. He dominated in the pros, just as he had in college.

Pitts offensive linecalso had Jimbo Covert also Hall of famer. Great offense line for Bears in 1980s.

Of course everyone remembers Marino but Blackledge nuked his career with gambling. I remember all those players, Cappelletti, Mitchell, Warner was a standout for the Seahawks. I just didn't remember Pitt being #1. But getting thrashed 48-14 when you're #1, ugh!!!

A 30,000 seat stadium would be about right. They could share it with PGH Central Catholic. Central Catholic would probably sell out their games...pitt would put 15,000-20,000 fans in the seats...lol@@rickstringer2241

@@frankmonaco1964 IF PSU beat Pitt and finishes 12-1, the Lions, and not the Buckeyes, make the playoffs.

That 2016 Pitt offense could score on anyone. Probably the best offense Pitt has ever had, top to bottom. They were the only team to defeat the national champion Clemson Tigers that year also. Unfortunately, Pitt had a *garbage* defense lol -- couldn't stop anyone.
Man were they fun to watch though! *H2P*

I'm the biggest Penn State fan around. I have to agree the Pitt loss in 2016 was what kept us out of the playoff

    • @AllHandlesHaveBeenTaken

Nope. Penn state beat Ohio state and won the big ten championship that year and somehow Ohio state went to the playoffs? Wtf no way. Penn state was still getting punished for Sandusky. Only conclusion

We kicked his ass in the 72 Cotton Bowl, proving to him what he hopefully knew in his heart, which is that the 1969 Lions were better than his best team too.

And he's wrong about the Roger Jackson pick, as Jackson's knees came down in bounds before any part of his body landed out.
