Richard Harris is so brilliant in this movie, it’s mesmerising and the music is so emotional, a very underrated movie, surely Richard Harris should have got a Oscar for his performance, much better than the remake the Revenant staring Leonardo DiCaprio, which basically was dull in scenery and acting, Richard put his heart and soul into his performance.
A great all around movie. Terrific score. Gotta love John Huston. I saw the film on 16mm on the Coast Guard Cutter Sweetbrier in '71. Favorite line: late in the film one of the men asks Houston if (Harris) is alive. Houston says 'he's alive' in that gravelly voice. Based on a true story.
'The Revenant" was a great action movie, but this movie was so much deeper, philosophically, and moved me much more. A fantastic score for a beautiful film.
My dad took me to see this film when i was a kid.He had a knack of knowing the ones worth going to.An adult i know see the finding the little bible scene. An whats to follow is classic. A MAN CALLED HORSE
Well Mr Harris I thought it was about time that expressed my appreciation for this magnificent piece of music. Some comments have been made regarding comparing the new movie on the Hugh Glass story with Man in the wilderness but this movie and its music is indeed the gold standard. When it was first released on the big screen, I can't honestly tell you how many times I went to see it but realized that it was the music that I so craved! Periodically the movie would be shown on tv and I even recorded it on an old reel to reel so I could get my music fix when I was feeling down. This particular piece of music stayed with me when I was in the Northwest territories and when I worked on cattle ranches in Alberta in the late seventies and early eighties, and even today on our own Horse farm and homestead here in Nova Scotia. It is an Honour to finally be able to thank you for this gift
+Rick Moskovits great post, good movie and prob better in some ways than Revenant... and yes awesome score... One disappointment I had was that it was filmed in Spain and not in the US or Canada Rockies... As and aside, had the American Paint horse people here in Richmond this week.. great people..
+irish89055 thanks for your post and nice comments. I must have forgotten that it was filmed in Spain, thanks for bringing that up-yes I agree western US or Canada would have been so much nicer as well as historically correct. Nice to talk with another Horse aficionado, we have a Pinto here at the farm who is called Lakota after the Sioux tribe, wish she was a registered Paint! I was born in Texas but lived in Gloucester Pt , VA FROM 1960-1965 , we only traveled to Richmond once in the winter in a 1957 chevy in freezing rain for a visit to an eye surgeon for my mother. Wish I could see Virginia again, what a beautiful state.
First saw this movie in the summer of 1972 with a co-feature, "Whats Up Doc?" at the movie theatre my father was a projectionist at. Also met my first girlfriend there. Found out she passed in 2000, and this always reminds me of her.
+Dee Marie Yes, awesome ... just wish it was longer here, maybe with today s long credit roll... the remake with DeCaprio will pale by comparison I'm sure..
John, Thanks for uploading this great movie intro music. This is my all time favorite move introduction. The music creates the sense of urgency in retreating from the high plains. Great movie as well, but this intro scene is amazing. I recall in the movie there was an intro title describing what was happening in this opening scene. Anyway thanks, I added it to my favorites!
Thanks for uploading this. Have been looking for the intro music for a long time. Rest of the music in the movie was also great! Would put your musical scores right up there with John Barry and John Williams.
just watched some Star Trek as I found this.. the one with Abraham Lincoln lol... this end scene was a great ending, i have it on VHS somewhere... gets to me...
+Johnny Harris I will have to see the Revenant, for which Dicaprio won Oscar for last night, but doubt it as good as this one( due to CGI and gratuitous sound effects ect) and your score sir, which gets me every time, though I wish there was a longer version and end credits then..... tears..
Wow, I've seen this movie 2 or 3 times and I didn't realize James Doohan was in it.....Scotty, from Startrek. He should have just beamed himself up and got the hell out of there.
Carlos Jesús Guillén Manco it's the same story albeit done in a much grittier way. Personally I didn't like it as it dragged on way too long and felt more like a pretentious arthouse film versus an actual movie, but the scene where Glass is mauled is very graphic and much more accurate to what really happened compared to this version. However, Man in the Wilderness is better paced and just a better film all around IMO.
I was a kid too , when I saw this story . Marked me forever . Thanks to my dad who loved westerns . So thanks daddy . A lesson in life .

The one line that always stuck with me was "You keep away, Zack Bass...................................you go back to Hell where you belong"

Back then a beaver pelt was like a brick of gold today, men were risking hide and hair in pursuit of them.Great movie, one of my all time favorites.

I saw this movie one time in my life...a lesson.
My dad took me to see this film when i was a kid.He had a knack of knowing the ones worth going to.An adult i know see the finding the little bible scene. An whats to follow is classic. A MAN CALLED HORSE
Very nice. I hope more people will hear and appreciate these timeless themes. JH's music speaks directly to the heart.

Top notch.Gets me every time.A great film.
Also one of the most memorable opening themes to hit the big screen - then and now.
The end credits music gets to me every time I hear it. So powerful and epic at the same time. Very well done.
Great theme music for a truly great movie from the 1970's , watch it and you'll agree , I'm sure .
First saw this movie in the summer of 1972 with a co-feature, "Whats Up Doc?" at the movie theatre my father was a projectionist at. Also met my first girlfriend there. Found out she passed in 2000, and this always reminds me of her.
One of my all time fav soundtracks, really made this movie great. Thanks for posting.
+Dee Marie Yes, awesome ... just wish it was longer here, maybe with today s long credit roll... the remake with DeCaprio will pale by comparison I'm sure..
Great music for a great film.
Thank you Mr Harris for this and your body of work...
That intro kicks ass !
Well done for uploading the soundtrack..brilliant!!
If you ever see this movie, look carefully. You might spot James Doohan... "Scotty" from Star Trek in a rare non Trek role.
This film; your music, part of the fabric of my being.

Why do they all take off on foot when all those horses are milling around?
The man is alive.
YES!

THE MARCH WEST !
Job 26:7 ; Psaume 50:12 ; 37:29.
The great portage west
The new movie from Iñarritú"The Revenant" is a copy from "Man in the wilderness"Isn´t it?
Carlos Jesús Guillén Manco it's the same story albeit done in a much grittier way. Based on a true story
?? Why didnt the director have the sense of everyone taking supplies and the horses especially . I don't think they 'll survive without them
Thanks so much, recently saw this epic movie. Any chance you could upload individual scenes?
My favorite is the birth scene.
full movie my arse
Richard Harris great actor not the sissy call actors of today.
