I have great respect for you Pete, we need to have some semblance of reason in this area. If we are going to eat meat, and we will, there will be somethings that appear to be harsh and maybe are. You do a great job of modeling one way it can be done. I am a hunter and I do everything I can to take animals quickly and cleanly. I have spent enough time out in the wild to tell you that very few if any predators in that environment kill as quickly of as cleanly as yours do. I grew up farming and left for another career, but I do know you do things well and criticism of what you do is petty at best,

I wanted to comment on your video yesterday when you were taking your pigs to market. I could sense in your demeanor you were feeling somewhat discouraged and perhaps wondering if your TH-cam contributions are worth it all. You have brought this up in the best and I was proud of you when you decided to continue making videos. I think I speak for many that watch your videos that we thoroughly enjoy them every time we watch them. I remember when those pigs were born and how we watched them grew, and finally the day they are shipped to be processed. I raise animals for the same purpose, and no one enjoys the final process, but it is why they are raised in the first place. Please don’t let those that push for animal rights cause you to doubt what you are doing. No one will ever do something that everyone agrees on, that’s what is so great about so much diversity. You both will ultimately need to make the decision whether to go on or stop sharing videos, but for me, I hope you continue. I can see you appreciate your animals and enjoy sharing them with others. Having been a teacher for 47 years I became accustomed to EVERYONE knowing more about what I was doing than I did. Your situation is similar yet different. All I can say Pete is CHIN UP, stay warm and believe in yourself! I resonate with all you have said about farming and animals. Don't be discouraged!
My grandparents had a farm in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. Your farm and the way you farm is so reminiscent of what I grew up with. . Kudos to you in the caring and loving way you treat the animals. We’re so disconnected from nature. People just don’t get it. Everything magically shows up in the grocery store. A lot of them want to support a cause to feel good about themselves.
Pete, I am a retired vet with a “regular” job but trying to get our homestead/farmstead up and running. We’ve raised pigs a few times before and it’s been a few years but we have 7 feeders now. You’re content and the way in which you present it is outstanding! Never stop doing what you are doing. Thank you!

I’m a small family farmer in Maine. I have a family of 6 and we produce 100% of our own meat and sell to family and friends. I have had these issues too. People don’t understand that food doesn’t magically show up on store shelves ready for cooking. The meat we raise here is given such a good life, and just one bad day. I love watching your farm evolve and pray I can expand to your scale of farm someday. Until then, we will continue to advocate for homegrown food and educating people on humanly raised meat. It’s not easy being a farmer. I love and respect our farmers. Without farmers there wouldn’t be food at the market!
This channel is the reason I decided to raise 5 pigs of my own this year. It gave me the knowledge to tackle this type of challenge for the very first time. I didn’t grow up on a farm, but always had a passion for it. When I had to unload my pigs at the butcher, 4 pigs locked up. I was encouraged to step on, kick and pull tales to get them off… I refused to do so. I tried to push and get them turned around but when they lock their legs and lay down in the trailer, I wasn’t winning anytime soon. When I was offered to use the « green stick » I didn’t hesitate, I knew what to expect because of this channel, it was the most humane and best tool for the job. Thanks Pete and Hillary for showing the « easy » and the « hard » sides of farming. You have my utmost respect.
Maybe the activists should come to a small farm sometime and do some of the stock handling, including getting tapped by the fence as well as the zap stick. It might just do them a world of good. But I doubt they would ever make the effort.

People see animals as pets not food so they want to get rid of food animals. With out knowing the harm that would cause. I had a small farm for 4 years loved it but couldn't keep it going by myself.

If those people had to live on very low amounts of food they might think twice before criticizing a farmer. Thank God for farmers, we appreciate your efforts to put food on our tables. Ignore the ignorant, they know not what they do! There are plenty of us who appreciate you!
I'm not a farmer myself but I have no problem watching content like this. If I had the means to support my local farmer I would do it in a heart beat. Its kind of inspirational watching these farming videos
my parents buy whole pigs and cows from farmers all the time. they process the animals on the farm so no processing fee. if you got a family, a fridge and a ride, it's easier than you think. you can even split with friends and family when it comes to cost.
Your comments are not a downer. We enjoy the depth of your thoughts and that you share them. This would be a great series for high school ag classes to watch. You and Hilary are compassionate, intelligent, and expressive farmers. We appreciate you.

Being born and raised in the city, I always took for granted our meat supply. However, discovering your channel has developed my sincere appreciation for you and small farmers throughout our country. I am fascinated by the dedication and hard work that goes into caring for your animals from birth to butcher.

I'm a city girl too but I remember when I was in school (in the late 60s) we had field trips to a real farm to see live pigs, chickens and cows, and were able to see how we really got milk from cows (not just from a carton in the store) and that these were the animals that fed all of us. Kids today are shielded from the basic food process, and have no clue that pork chops come from pigs or milk comes from cows. If they do, they have no idea HOW we get those food items.
I'm sure there are comments you see that we don't. Your channel is entertaining but you give us something to think about too. Wish more people would ponder things more often.

I grew up next door to a farm and worked there during my teenage years. I witnessed first hand life and death that go hand in hand on a working farm. It's often sad and not pretty but is a necessary part of farm life, meat doesn't just magically appear in grocery stores. Pete's videos realistically depict the cycle of life on a farm and he treats his animals well. I have nothing but respect and admiration for Pete and his family and hope he ignores the negative comments and continues to make videos for those of us who understand and appreciate his honesty and efforts to bring the realities of farming to the TH-cam audience.
Getting a pig to move in the direction u want is like winning the lottery! Even the best trained slop bucket pig knows when’s something’s up!
This just makes me respect the farmers like Pete and Hillary even more. Seeing the full circle of farming also makes me appreciate my food for the blessing it is. Thank you!
Pete, love your channel. No reasonable person should find fault with the way you treat your animals. I’ve seen the other kind of farm, typically the big factory operations and the contrast is stark. Your emphasis on pasture makes all the difference.
Too many unreasonable folks running their mouth before engaging their brains Pete. You never should have to explain the science and wisdom behind your farming. Those with the worst comments are the least informed. It’s simply verbal vomit. Let it go.

I am an engineer at 10 years and just moved up a rung. Before watching your videos I did have that sense of emptiness at work. I have made some moves to try and achieve what you have done. I only have 10 acres but have quickly found the small farmer support group both in my community and on TH-cam. I don’t think I will have a problem getting started with what I have.
The people every step of the way are amazing. If the engineering world was only filled with the kind and genuine people I have found from getting hey, pigs and feed. I think so many few people realize how many cool people are out there when you slow down to meet them.
What was raise enough chickens and pigs to pay for free meat has turned into something different mostly from the inspiration found on your channel and how I have related to your experience.
For me at this point it’s all about meeting people and learning new things. Something I forgot in my professional life. Maybe I can change that to.
Found my 8 year old watching your old shows. The other day she insisted that we use a hose instead of a bucket to water the pigs. It won’t freeze dad! I’ll show you.

When we first moved to Colorado from Minnesota, we discovered feed lots. The animals are not treated very well. Those who run them have no empathy toward the animal.
Anyone who gripes about the way you run your farm have never been to one of those.

I was born in 1956 although I wasn’t raised on a farm,from a small village surrounded by mainly dairy and beef farms with a few hog farms later in my teens 2/3rds of my classmates lived on a farm so I spend many hours on farms…kids nowdays are to sheltered, never having had to hay all summer for a few dollars for the weekends..they don’t realize that animals are food ,weather wild or domesticated..I honestly think kids nowdays ,think the grocery store is were food comes from…to bad..pretty soon there won’t be any small farms..what a grand time to live 50,60 and 70s..

Those people who criticize you I’m sure they are employed to provide a living for themselves and families and go to the store to buy their food. You have chosen farming to earn your living. You are kind and caring of your animals and how you use your land to give them nutritional hay and grasses and practice rotation. I’ve learned a lot from following you….I understand and in my prayers I need to thank the bird or animal or the plants and fruits I eat to provide me and my family with life. It’s reality you gotta eat no matter wearing you live on this earth food comes from farms, ranches, hunting and the sea!

I have owned, raised and processed a lot of farm animals over the last 45 years. Currently have goats, Dexters, chickens, ducks and turkeys. I raise meat birds, process turkeys and send cows to slaughter. We admire what you and Hillary have managed to achieve with your place! Very jealous of your infrastructure lol We think you guys are doing a fabulous job and doing it the right way. The disconnect is real, the lack of awareness regarding where our food really comes from is scary and all we, as small farmers, can do is educate those around us. You do an excellent job of that. Keep on keeping on and DON'T let the extremists get you down. You are making a good life for your family and all the critters in your care.
P & H-Hey there. I have not missed a video you have put out that I know of. In 1950's, our family gathered in fall. I had help grandpa earlier move our ear marked pigs from the wild to the hog pens on the farm. Our ear marks were registered at courthouse. The whole family showed up and processed the pigs. We salted and smoked meat. People have lost these family events. Sitting in chair talking to grandma while she cooked sausage on wood cook stove. Listening to your videos brings back memories. All the work you put in on your farm is understood by some of us. I really enjoy your works. I love you. Dewayne Willis

Your video showed a typical ride to the locker. I remember the trip and dad never talked, mom neither. It was quiet on the farm for several days. Everyone needs to see this side to have a deeper appreciation for the food they eat.

The disconnect from farm to plate is outrageous these days. I have taken up butchering and processing myself because I'm just tired of the nonsense that comes from people's mouths. I agree with what someone said about the animals being humanly treated.They where not abused when taking them to be slaughter and treated with kindness in there holding pens. That's the biggest thing for me when animals are going to slaughtered for food they should always be treated with kindness not hit or beating them to go where you want.Animals can sense death so you want to be gentle not beating the animal to get where you want.I appreciate the love you give to your animals,they are on earth to provide food but you still love and respect them.Pigs are very smart animals.
I know you are going to know when I mention the 30,000 cattle that where left to stand in holding pens with out water or food waiting to go to slaughter,they all died. I cry when animals are abused for food or anything else .I love the way you respect the animals with kindness .
As a city boy I appreciate seeing the real life of farming and the serious sweat that goes into producing quality farm products. Like many other industries it is easy to criticize as an outside observer - but any intelligent person who watches this channel can appreciate how you balance compassion for living creatures with a practical approach to being productive. Pigs are the most obstinate of all farm animals. I have spent too many hours on my grandfathers farm trying to make a pig go somewhere it does NOT want to go. I started crying watching them go off to butcher. I have a soft heart about farm animals. I grew up on the farm and know it's hard to see the go. I have new guinea pigs and just started breading them, I haven't seen any thing sa of yet between the boat and guilt. We raised a guilt for over 3yrsrd and she never bred, come to find out she was born with a her reproductive stuff, I think she was probably a twin. Best meat😋 tasted a lot like beef. Your so good to all your animals.

Even though we all see & hear the horrible ways that some humans think things should be (We only hope that their hearts will be changed), we are still in the majority of the true meanings of everyday life on the farm (& Yes, we are out there). I know by watching your videos & listening to your heart about these negative attitudes that a few seem to think they are always right. I personally believe that a big part of getting older is collecting experiences and perspectives. Things are rarely a binary good/bad. I believe that there are a lot of things that need to be improved in modern farming, but I think you do a great job trying to reach a balance between being a responsible farmer and running a business that feeds people. I do appreciate your efforts to run a farm that sustainably utilizes the land, does not make the animals suffer needlessly, and passes the realistic cost of farming onto the client. The world would be a better place if more farmers operated like your family does.

There are still many of us farm raised folks who understand what it takes to run a farm. Your family runs a gentle operation. Ignore the trolls who have no idea what they are talking about. Pigs...pigs used to chew on me when I cleaned their pens. Ask me how I felt about that! my dad used to poke the chewers with his hay fork. Reality.
Hang in there Pete, your a good guy and doing what is right. No one can fault you for that...
But see this is why we (or at least i anyway) like your channel. You don't say away from the maybe ugly or less pretty realities of farming. You show the birth of new piglets just as much as you show them going off the the butcher. You show the cows grazing on the field just as much as you show shoveling out the manure.
I really appreciate that, since it feels like a lot of these farm youtube channels are all about "the farm life™" and not about how the day to day actually works
Your channel has really helped re-connect me to the realities of small farming. Still don’t like the industrial handling of animals, but you have a wonderfully humane and compassionate farm. If people want to eat meat, there is no better way to grow it than on a farm like yours. Thank you for keeping us in touch with farming. P.S. Those pigs were HUGE. I would have used any tool to hand to move them!

Too many believe meat miraculously appears wrapped up in the store. And have no concept of true farming. This is a good farmer here. Obvious to see he loves what he does, and respects his land and animals.
Pete your raising them for food . Some people don't under stand where there meat comes from. Your doing the right thing.
I do understand that feeling of the extreme reactions. I was told that I was heartless once. Just I see the difference between a pet we care for and an animal we care for. As a farmers daughter, I learned this difference. Bless the farmers and the families this year and the years to come.

People need to think it's better to get your meat from a private operation like Pete's than an industrial indoor farm with thousands of animals these 8 are much better looked after. Well done you and Hillary, you have your family there the only thing that matters you work together, live happy countryside lives.
Pete, as usual, you tell the truth about society’s disconnect. Our world, only wants to see the sunny side of things, and how they get the food they purchase at the grocery store, or even the farmers market. This is one reason I am very happy that I grew up in a small village, in farm country, and experienced the evolution of real life, and the growing of livestock, and nurturing them to be the best, when it is time to get them ready to be processed and end up on someone’s table for them and their family to enjoy. To even have gone hunting, and harvest a deer, or rabbit, has met with this disconnect and misunderstanding, that if you did not do this, the deer and even the rabbit would destroy crops, to the point, that you would find it difficult to produce the quality of products that a farm grows, whether it is vegetables, milk, or meat. The disconnect may be part of the loss of so many farms, because the next generations are reluctant take on the political fight, as well as the hard work and dedication it takes to survive in todays world.😊
could tell the butcher was done with it when he walked away after going to grab and chuck a pig but looked up into camera....he and you were very gentle with the animals....keep up the good work being the voice of reason!! Thank You for helping to feed America.

I appreciate that you and Hilary are true to your calling as farmers. You care for your animals well yet don't make pets out of them. Every animal has a purpose and are a valuable part of the business plan. There are many creators out there that appear to be collecting animals with no clear plan or purpose. Some of them don't understand animal behavior or instincts. What I see on your farm is working with the animals for the least stress and minimal wasted energy. Keep up the good work. 🙂
This is what I appreciate most about you and your channel Pete! Honest , not sugar coated and tell it like it is! I was raised on a farm. The way you live is very natural to me. Keep doing what you do. I’ve learned much from You when it comes to my own homestead and raising animals.I lean heavy on your advice as I am making my transition from my full time job as mechanic To full time small farmer! The trailer has useful features for shifting critters around. Pigs are notorious for just being uncooperative unless it’s something they want to do. Getting OFF the trailer right at first wasn’t what they wanted to do. I remember your chat about “purposeful” goals on the farm - that’s sensible. Red has produced some gorgeous litters - and served her purpose admirably. My observation has been that you certainly treat your animals with purpose and reason. It shouldn’t have to be said by you - but I’m glad you did take the time to chip away at the blockheads who just don’t see reason. Wishing you ALL the joy and success in the coming year, and looking forward to watching your progress toward your heritage breed goals - and the rest of your endeavors.

Dear Mr. Pete and Ms. Hillary. The farmers of America are the reason America is great. If a country does not have good agriculture, then that country falls. History has proven this. You are one of the best examples of keeping the people of America alive. You are a great care giver of animals and humans. Whom ever complained at you about the piggers probably say that when wheat farmers use the combine to bring in the harvest, they are being to rough with the wheat. These people don't know squat about that bacon they ate this morning. As Mr. Rogers always said. "Don't pay attention to the mean people, but pay attention to the helpers" You have a lot of people on your side. Also, if it had been me trying to get the piggers out of the trailer, I would have cussing like a french sailor. You are the best and we won't let you forget that. "Steps off soap box"
