This kind of video is literally how I found your channel. I searched for “life in Alaska” and found you guys! I’m so fascinated by the unique extremes you have to live with. So please keep making this kind of content! On the subject of homeschooling, I’d love to know more about your schooling. I’m a kindergarten teacher and I love to learn about alternative education methods. I hope you share!
Gosh, I miss my mother so, much it hurts bad! I was very close to her. Miss having fun with her! A mother is a treasure for sure! They are to be respected & loved!! It’s heartbreaking how some are treated. My mother was my best friend! I hate that cancer stole the living life out of her. Miss her...show your sweet momma in more videos. You’re lucky you still have her living in your life.
Coldest weather experienced was when I took a second job "up the hill in Victorville Ca." car thermometer read 18 one morning. You may live in a cold environment but your family has the warmest hearts and you guys rock.
Colombia and Carhartt - Highly recommended for harsh winter weather. I lived in North Dakota for all of my life and I swear by the Carhartt and Colombia coat combo that it will keep you so toasty warm even when the temperatures hit -32°.
As someone looking to anchorage, your insight in what life is like(especially grocery prices and such) are an amazing firsthand resource! You guys are amazing, and I truly enjoy your videos! God bless!
Omg I'm in SoCal and I'm dying with our heat I want to move to alaska so bad. In the winter i sleep with every window open and let the house get down to high 40s low 50s and I'm still hot 😂😂
I'm so glad I watched this video. I'm in Chicago and we are experiencing windchill close to -50s which is rare around here. Burr it's cold. love the channel
I did that one year here in Indiana-throwing water into the air. This year we have had very very mild temps - 40s and 50s! This morning I had the doors open - tonite we are going into the 30s for about a week. We have been so lucky this year - very minimal snow that melts the next day.
Favorite family vloggers!!! Earls family had been my favs for years, but OMG I seriously love you guys and now you are and dont see that changing soon! watching you makes me so happy!!! And absolutely love your North Pole beautiful life. Love your kids and the awesome job you two do as parents and teaching them about God. Seriously, thank you for sharing and bringing smiles to our days!!!
Awesome vlog! I found your channel searching for life in Interior Alaska and not only do you provide great Interior Alaska info we also just love your wonderful family! I get to Fairbanks at least once a year but wish it was more. I find such peace in the Interior. Alaska is so majestic! We would live to see your children's curriculum on this channel. Have a blessed week! Hi kiddos!
I truly love your family. I have never watched a vlog with out smiling. Thank you for always making my day happier when you post. A bit of a perfectionist... I have one of those. Many advantages to that but many struggles as well.
I moved to Alaska with the military, I’m from California and hate the cold, but you get used to it! It’s currently -4 and it feels really warm to me now
I love watching your little family :) I watch you in the morning while I get ready for work. Today I’m watching before I head into take my board exams!! Please say a prayer for me :)
Talking about the big bulky jacket....I immediately thought of the little brother in Christmas Story who couldn't put his arms down after his mom put him in his "suit"....LOL
maybe do a series called something like jessica's home school showing how to, school routines, materials, lessons ect it would help out others just getting started or thinking of home schooling there kids
The circuit breaker popped on our outdoor plug once when the temp was at least 20 below. Hubby was stationed at Eilson and didn't make it in that day! Had to rent a bullet heater to thaw out the truck's engine! Good times in Alaska! Tons of great memories.
besides extra clothes and blankets i also keep some food and drinks and heat packs and them caned candle things that you can put a pan over to heat up food and water, and flashlights and extra batteries, and of course a bucket with lid and toliet paper in my extreme weather supplies for when i go out just incase stranded for hours or even a few days you never know
When I first started driving..my Dad put kitty litter..a tin can..with candles..waterproof matches..extra socks..gloves..and a blanket..in the trunk of my car. This was before cellphones..he also put a CB radio in my car..the purpose of the can..candles and matches..was to put a small amount amount of heat in the car.
Now I feel like I need to add a bunch of things to my vehicle now once I get it back from the shop, sadly it couldn’t handle the temps here in Fairbanks. Thanks for the tips I will definitely be using them.
Hey guys...use to live in Lake Placid NY. Coldest place I have ever lived in. Temps would be -18 to -38 and the house was heated by a huge Vermont Casting Wood Stove. We would buy 3-4 cords of wood for one winter...we lived in the 2nd floor apartment with big windows up above a large ledge in the pines. Stone and log steps (35 of them) and all the wood was down in the parking space by the road.
I grew up in the foothills of a North Carolina and occasionally the windshield would make it five or 10 below I think maybe even 15 but that was not the air temperature. I don’t get cold easy but I don’t think I could hang with your level of cold God bless that Alaskan toughness
This was such an interesting vlog! I live in Iowa and our winters get pretty chilly, but nothing compared to the extremes you experience in Alaska! So cool to see your beautiful environment.
I live in Minnesota and we do much the same with the survival gear. Remote starters are awesome! We've actually had a strange, mild winter so far. Quite cold though last few days, thankfully, not minus 34. Love the throwing hot water...our weather people like to do that. Stay warm and hope Bert's knee feels better soon.
Coldest I have experienced is -42 Celsius with a -48 Celsius windchill value (Canada) and, I do not have a vehicle - I walk and take the city bus. When it is in the -30 Celsius range though before windchill value I plan carefully so I do not have to walk much or wait long for a bus. Additionally to stay safe in these temps I pack extra socks, hand warmers, and wear layers.
Back when I was young, around 1978 and living in Anchorage I remember seeing temps around -45. We had a massive storm roll through with high winds, which glazed over everything. Best fun ever sliding over the ice on my way to school.
I hope you also have the traction aid , booster cable and showel in the truck , its a must have in Quebec winter especially went it goes down to -40 °C
We lived in Iowa for a couple of years, and we had those super-cold temps at times, but not all the time! I used to go to work early (4:30 am) and there were several times it was -35 at that time of the morning! It takes your breath away when you step outside!!!
Thank you guy's sharing life in Alaska! It's so different from the world I know here in Asheville, NC. Love to hear the snow crunching under your feet!!!
Somers Family, you all have such warm hearts! I really enjoy watching your vlogs and appreciate the time it takes you. Bert, I pray that you knew gets better and is pain free very soon! Jessica, I love the top you're wearing. Do you mind sharing where you got it from?
The coldest weather I have ever been in was the winter in 1978 in Cincinnati Ohio when it got down to -25 below zero for 2 days along with 3 feet of snow on the ground...in Florida where I live now, one year it got down to 10 degrees one day.....thank God for heaters...I know I couldn't survive the winters in Alaska but I would love to visit Alaska someday...it is what I would like to do in the future....I love your vlogs...keep 'em coming.....
I live in a part of Canada where it can easily get to -40 in the winter. You do get used to it BUT man is it a shock when it first happens. Your tips for travelling in the car are spot on. Cars and those temps do not mix so your right, always good to have extras when driving around just in case.
I never thought of not touching the doorknob with a bare hand. I know not to lick a pole like that kid in that Christmas movie. But I guess I never really thought about because it's so cold, it can and will burn your bare skin. I love this information on living in Alaska. ❤️ Thank you for sharing yall!
Did subscribe! I’m watching this video and can’t comprehend what it’s like with that extreme cold. And then you said you and the kids were going to get wood! WHAT? You’re not taking them out in the woods! Glad they stayed in garage. Loved the education though about the cold.
Cool - literally lol. I’m originally from PA but never been in weather that cold. We used to go to Potter County PA in the winter a lot. Used to pack extra warm clothes and blankets/sleeping bag, bagged salt and cat litter. In central Florida now - 79 degrees and sunny today! You all should come to Disney World and Legoland!
Jan Brady wow! We had a family friend who had a cabin in Potter. Anyone was welcome to stay there. I loved it! No television- had an old wood burning kitchen stove. Very rustic. I liked the winters there but I think my favorite time of year to stay there was the fall because the colors were gorgeous!
I live in [true] upstate NY, about an hour to the Canadian border, and we have hit -40 many times. I am always asking myself why I live where the air hurts my skin?! 😂 Stay warm!
I am not sure how well I could survive -40 F.!?!? It is wonderful to see all of the beautiful snow! The kids are so amazing at wanting to help Bert with cutting the fire wood. Today in Northwest Ohio it got up to 50+ F.
Wow! That’s unbelievably cold! Thanks for sharing some tips. My kids and I were just talking about how we can be more prepared in our car in the cold here in Utah.
We lived there in North Pole from 2001-2004...love your videos! My kids went to public school and the bus came at a specific time so you didn't freeze out there. Our coldest was Dec. 20th 2001...-58°.
I came across your channel right after Christmas from another blogging family that you sent a Christmas gift to and I cant get enuff of both of you and your family. I live in Canada so it gets cold here but not as cold as you. Love seeing what life is like out there.
I’ve lived in Eagle River the past 12 years and for the past 5-6 years, we’ve had only a handful of below zero weather, but my first 3 years here, it got down to -20 pretty regularly during the winter. I worked at Fort Yukon in November and December 2012 and it got down to -40, but when I went home and stopped in Fairbanks, it was in the teens and snowing. Fairbanks is not for the faint at heart! And for those that can ski or snowboard at Mount Aurora or Birch Hill, I gotta hand it to them!
Thank you for your posts i really enjoy seeing your side of life . I live in Western Australia , its smmer time here right now and its warm . It is9 p.m. here now and 26 C . Not too warm , but it will heat up more tomorrow . Our temps usually are inthe high C 30's in the day. We have not got to that yet, but we will and i will be wanting to change place with you . I saw here you did a shop and compared prices , i thought your prics wee ok unti i ealised we use kilograms equals 2.2 pounds , you use pounds, so you prices are definetly higher than ours . Have a great day , i look forward to more of your posts . Say Hi to your children for me from the land of Koals and Kangaroos ! All the best to you and your husband , hope his knee is soon better . Sincerely Pat in Western Australia
I think you video just saved half of the Midwest. I live in nc and have been wanting snow but am so thankful our temps aren’t in the negative digits like the north and ak
I would love to see what type of curriculum you use for your kids, and what curriculums you may have used in years past that you don't use anymore, and why you switched. If and when I have kids one day, I am looking more towards home school options.
The coldest temperature I’ve experienced is -45, it’s brutal! I live in Northern Ontario, Canada. I feel like I could do well living in Alaska, I don’t super hate the cold!
Watching because in 2 days its gonna get to -45 in chicago/northwest indiana. Yay.. lol. As of the last couple days it's confirmed colder here then Alaska. It's been crazy. A few people were found frozen to death in downtown chicago :( so horribly sad. We are used to it being cold but not usually this cold for this many days. But we're all preparing. They told us to keep the farthest faucet from the water heater trickling all night when its gonna be -50° F. Love these videos:)
Hey guys we checked out the other family you recommended and know of your family! They have watched your channel! And they were so sweet they even thanked me visiting the channel!
Yes, please show us your curriculum. Talk about your homeschool. I am a homeschooling mother too and it’s so fun to hear other people’s choices and ideas.
"It's a little bit chilly right now its 39 below" say what???👀👀🤣🤣🤣..i live in south Florida where Its freezing out when it falls below 70 out🤣🤣🤣🤣

You have a wonderful mom. What a blessing she must be to you and the family.
There is nothing appealing about living in -40 weather. But you guys make it look fun! 😂
Colombia and Carhartt - Highly recommended for harsh winter weather. I lived in North Dakota for all of my life and I swear by the Carhartt and Colombia coat combo that it will keep you so toasty warm even when the temperatures hit -32°.

I love the way that your children are so eager to help their Dad out with the wood.
Good gravy, I thought 30 in SoCal was cold. Can’t even imagine... Then again, our desert summers are often 115. Praise God for A/C! 👍

We know the feeling!!
How much is your monthly heating energy bills with temperatures that extreme? I'm sure houses are built more air tight?
besides extra clothes and blankets i also keep some food and drinks and heat packs and them caned candle things that you can put a pan over to heat up food and water, and flashlights and extra batteries, and of course a bucket with lid and toliet paper in my extreme weather supplies for when i go out just incase stranded for hours or even a few days you never know

I’m glad Bert is doing better. I’d love to see the new homeschool curriculum. I’m already trying to plan for next year.
I’m definitely interested in how you homeschool and your curriculum! Love y’all so much!
im quite surprised that there are no curtains om the windows to help retain heat in the house.
I live in a part of Canada where it can easily get to -40 in the winter. You do get used to it BUT man is it a shock when it first happens. Your tips for travelling in the car are spot on. Cars and those temps do not mix so your right, always good to have extras when driving around just in case.

Your videos are nice and loud. Perfect for watching on our phones. I like that!
Hello from Anchorage! I just found you guys and am loving every bit! Lol God bless and stay warm!
You have a well coordinated family. You seem to have everything in hand.
I got off work yesterday and the thermometer in my car said it was 91 degrees! Florida is crazy lol
Eugene Trotter LoL yep! Been nice tho - I’ve had the windows open the last couple of days!
Winter in Winnipeg, Canada is bascially the same. Reminds me of the years living in Canada.....
You have huge houses to keep warm!
Praying your leg heals quickly. Love you guys!! Definitely would love to see your homeschool curriculum 😊Stay warm!!
Good advice - I went out in -15F in January and took my -30F boots. Then forgot to wear them. Big mistake. You can get frostbite so fast.
Using the thumb holes when out keeps hands warmer I found out about that when I was out blowing snow and it was about 10 below zero.
We lived there in North Pole from 2001-2004...love your videos! My kids went to public school and the bus came at a specific time so you didn't freeze out there. Our coldest was Dec. 20th 2001...-58°.
Gosh just hearing that snow crunch, we feel this in Calgary every year!
I came across your channel right after Christmas from another blogging family that you sent a Christmas gift to and I cant get enuff of both of you and your family. I live in Canada so it gets cold here but not as cold as you. Love seeing what life is like out there.

HAHA HAHA HAHA HAHA. NO ITS NOT. EVERYBODY HANDLES PAIN DIFFERENTLY
I view it as things men say to make their wives feel better. Like telling children they are smart...in reality they are children.
I think you video just saved half of the Midwest. I live in nc and have been wanting snow but am so thankful our temps aren’t in the negative digits like the north and ak
