How do you save your old writing? What's the oldest piece of writing you still have? (Do you keep it all in a tub? Bahaha. Or do you have a more sophisticated set-up?)
What's the cringiest WIP you ever wrote??
Of your old stories, which would you most like to revisit now that you're older and more experienced? How would you change them?

This is bizarre. Watching you read writings from your 19-year-old self without remembrance, speaking fondly as if this person when you were 19(ish) is a stranger. I'm 19 now. Those writing goals for editing, rewriting, getting beta readers, publishing, etc, sound eerily similar to my own dreams right now, just with lengthier time allotted for each. Minus the movies--I could never imagine that, haha. I have lots of backlog of writing notebooks, but 10X more for sketchbooks. You have so much more to look back on, it's so cool. You've launched me into an existential crisis of sorts, thank you!

LOVED THIS VIDEO! Oh my god. I am so glad I'm not the only one with a ton of barely written in notebooks from childhood. I still have all the notebooks my homeschool co-op writing teacher had us keep. I have some dark stuff in there; how she didn't seem concerned still baffles me. I also have my old Pirates of the Caribbean fanfic printed out and every time I look at it, I cringe. It isn't as bad as what I wrote at like, 11 or 12 when I really got into historical fiction. I didn't do any research, so it was like I just went "Eh, later I'll see if I am accurate." I literally had three notebooks full of this saga about 4 childhood friends, all the way up to a second generation. It was... a lot of nonsense and drama. But now I'm seeing how that early writing informed my current writing at the age of 30. I think big picture (often to my detriment) and love epic sagas spanning decades, but now it is horror/superheroes instead of badly written historical romance. lmao.

I've kept almost everything about my old writing in a box under my bed. Some things have been lost as old computers became unusable or just scrapped, but what I did end up printing or writing by hand has been saved as much as possible. Its fun to look back on it and remember what you were doing back then and realize how far you've come as a writer, especially when you feel like you haven't progressed enough.
I also had a car crash scene back in high school that still confuses me today 😂 And I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who wrote in class and made it look like I was doing actual work!

About age 8, I wrote the oldest story I can remember writing. Based upon David Bowie's song; Star Man. An alien came to Earth and rescued all the children from school. I was never a fan of school. Sadly all copies of the tale have long since been lost to the passing years. But I think we get the idea of how great this story was; aged 8.

I love stuff like this. I wrote a whole self insert sci Fi series about an alien invasion when I was in second/third grade that I still have and look back on fondly. I mostly wrote fanfiction as a teenager and then went through some really horrendous life events and lost the ability to write at all until a couple years ago. Now all my work is original and makes me so happy.

What I notice is not that my stories evolve, but that old stories forgotten root their way subconsciously into new ones that are better and actually fit. It's like my brain always has the story pieces it's just looking for the right puzzle.

Aaah I’m late but I keep all my old notebooks in an antique trunk my grandma gave me (it’s really beautiful, the wood is glossy and there’s a beautiful flower painted in muted rosy tones on the lid), which feels a little irreverent because it’s mainly self-insert fanfiction.

It's so fun that you can look back on your old stories and enjoy roasting them.😄 Sometimes I'm sad that I don't have much in the way of really old writing to revisit. My only attempts at writing as a kid was two one-paragraph-each story attempts that I'm pretty sure I erased soon after. All other stories I kept in my head and they were mainly self-insert stuff. There were also two high school short fiction writing assignments that I wish I could reread just to see what they were like, but I don't know where they are😔, and a graded assignment is different than writting for yourself. I didn't truly start writing my own stories until my early 20's and since I'm the same age as you, I don't feel separated enough from them yet to roast them. I mainly just want to edit them.😆

This is really fun! Also your talking about handwriting evolving made me remember my phase of writing 'that' kind of 'a', AND THEN YOU MENTIONED EXACTLY THAT 18:15 I had the exact same experience of forcibly changing my handwriting because I saw someone write 'a's like 'that' and thought it was cool (though for me that phase lasted a few years HAHA)

I recently cleaned out the loft at my parents house... and I found bins full of folders and notebooks containing my CSI Miami fanfiction from college, my 7th Heaven and Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman fanfiction from Middle and High School, my Star Wars stories from high school and college, my old diaries, old assignments. Some of it was cringe and bad. But I was pleasantly surprised by some of it. I actually used to post CSI Miami fanfiction on a fanfiction forum just for the show and they got better engagement than the stuff I post occasionally on Wattpad...

  • @rebekaalvie
    @rebekaalvie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have done this before with old notebooks. Some of the stories come right back to me and others are like where was I trying to go with this? It has caused me to write my plot notes and outlines super detailed now so that if I leave a story and come back years later I'll actually (hopefully) know what is going on. One of the ones I'd like to revisit is actually a Star Wars/Andromeda fanfiction. But that's one of the ones that I have no idea what I was doing with it since it also randomly has Harry Potter characters involved. It's probably the cringiest even though I still have fond memories of it and would like to see what I could do with it 20 years later.

Such a fun experience to watch you go through your old writing. I was laughing so hard at your confused face reading some of your old work. I can totally relate to the barely used notebooks. Heck, that is something I still do to this day, though I am better at eventually using all of the pages in them now. That random brainstorming note reminds me so much of my own as well, and oftentimes I go back to read them later and find myself stumped as to what I was trying to say. I don't have a lot of my old writing sadly, but I do have pretty much everything written from university (20 years ago) onward and man some of that stuff was terrible but fantastic in it's own way.

My senior year of high school I wrote “musicals”. I don’t write music, so I used songs from broadway musicals, Disney, pop songs, etc. There’s a couple of those ideas that I’m now planning as actual stories instead of musicals. Some characters names and ideas have changed, but I put the songs from the “musical” idea on the playlists.

Yes I have a tub of notebooks that have all my old writing in them, yes I have stories that I started at as young as 8 years old that changed over time into better stories. The most notable is the mage chronicles: the lost mage princess which originated as a story about two twins who were orphaned and took in by a family of like 12 kids and a father. That one changed soooo much, to the point that I published it and have the second book in the series getting published soon.

My own self insert fan fiction, for my eyes only, is still a comfort read for me cause it holds up and still gets me feeling that way. I have to say the Episode story I wrote when I was 14-15 is also still really good so it's kind of fun to see if you still stand behind who you were back when you were younger. But as for my actual books, oh yikes I don't want to go back to the first drafts like ever. The writing is so juvenile, the plot chaotic and the characters change personalities every chapter.
