- Children in five countries were asked to draw pictures of people doing a number of jobs. This short video shows what they drew and their reaction when they met people who do these jobs in real life.
Background
In March 2016 to mark International Women's Day, our charity published a two-minute video, Redraw the Balance, kindly made by Mullen Lowe. It showed how gender stereotyping starts at a young age.
66 children aged five to seven were asked to draw a picture of a firefighter, a surgeon and a fighter pilot.
61 drew men, five drew women.
They were then asked if they would like to meet real-life versions of their drawings. The film captured their reaction and went viral, being viewed over 100 million times, and has since been recreated in a number of countries. This new film features footage from these versions and shows how gender stereotyping is a global issue.
One easy way of helping to tackle these preconceptions, is for people from world of work to talk with young people in primary and secondary schools.
