Multi-million-dollar Sacramento bridge may be torn down due to unsafe condition, city says

- A new multi-million dollar bridge was supposed to make it safer for people to walk or bike between Land Park and the Sacramento River, but now it's the bridge itself that is creating a potentially dangerous situation.
So from the ground up city inspectors, DOT, Caltrans approved the bridge all the way through completion. Where was the concern prior to completion?
@p.b.3224: Congratulations, you have identified the 800 pound gorilla in the room!
Too much stupid here. Maybe Chinese made materials could be a play here. Also, maybe inspectors were getting kickbacks for the contractor. Mr Bill
GDP goes up by building the bridge, tearing it down, and building it again. Think of how many more people get jobs now! Besides our government can just print more money.
This should have been caught by the inspectors. All of the inspectors involved in the project should be reviewed, and fired if they were complicit in letting the builder cut corners.
Absolutely 💯
Isn't that how the structural issues have been discovered?
Take the replacement costs out of City manager, and City council salaries.
Why should taxpayers be expected to pay for politician's failures?
This is what you get when you have a One Party Democrat machine running everything.
@@TeddyRumbleThe contractor's insurance will probably pick up the cost unless the City approved it. Re: your political statement, Republicans are too busy worrying about things that aren't real, like immigrants eating your dogs and cats, to be on top of management slips like this.
@@longdolinafamily8873yeah... reduce politics to THAT .. gimme a break.
SOMETHING FISHY BETWEEN THE BUILDER AND CITY ENGINEER OFFICE !!!!!!!!!! TAXPAYERS MONEY THROWN INTO A BONFIRE !!!!!!!!!!
You guys keep voting for Democrats. What do you expect?
Ban the contractor from doing business with the city & county, then take them to court to recoup costs.
is not the gc, it is the architect, engineer, and inspection, cause the gc just follow the blueprint!
@yehuo2825 Dumb comment

It's safe enough to drive under, but not ride a bike over?
Neither. People will die, but the City Council got rich, so...
C'mon! What's more important???
Sacramento 😂😂
Mayor Mary steinbooger, where are you.

The formwork is still in place. That formwork is strong enough to support the wet concrete, and when the concrete cures, you end up with both the structural concrete and the formwork...it's a redundant system.
Wasting money again Sacramento!!!the bridge builder should get sued!! Couple years been going by no progress
They'll just declare bankruptcy.
How much money went straight into Darrell Steinberg's pockets???
Na, no more "mishaps" with our taxpayer money. People need to start going to prison for million+ dollar failures.
Every step of construction has to be signed off an inspector with the f****** government. When you build a house and you are putting a footing in they have to come out and verify that the footing hole before you even pour the concrete is the correct size and shape. Where the hell were the inspectors through the process of building this bridge. They even in some cases will want to see your concrete invoice to make sure you put the correct Concrete in for the footing of your house. I'm guessing since it was a government project that the government decided they didn't need to do any inspections. Was the "inferior building materials" specified on the plans or did they just swap them out. My guess is it was in the plans and the city Engineers that approved the plans just rubber stamped it along.
Did anyone do a plan check? I think we rely too much on software instead of qualified engineers actually looking at P & specs. For a very long time, teams would find errors ahead of time. After that qualified materials from suppliers were bid on. Did they substitute faulty concrete, getting paid for high quality grade? Who checked it? Who is the Inspector? Our projects had independent inspectors. Wha he qualified? What other bridges have they approved? This could snowball into other projects.
So are we getting a refund on our wasted tax dollars? And who is being held accountable for this? I am sick of my taxes going to sup-par bureaucrats who don't answer for their screwups.
< insert generic angry american comment about following the money >
We are sick of this sh!t from government when it isn’t tolerated in the private sector. When you don’t get rid of incompetence, you reward it. When our lives are in their hands and it’s our money, we’re going to speak up. This seems one of the few ways to voice grievances. What would letters do or phone calls? Big government is getting more unqualified as younger people take over.

Interesting the city, with its manager making $600,000 a year, is at fault.
Were the building inspectors asleep? Or bought off???
Agree. When are these corrupt fat cats going to start being held accountable? I can barely afford to pay my own bills, let alone pay for yet another bridge I don’t use yet these guys are living the good life with no repercussions? I’ve had enough.
Im 100% with that lady. There must be accountability. The city can’t afford wasting money like that
And this substandard bridge crosses over I-5, a vital, heavily-traveled interstate route. We could have a lengthy highway closure and a complete transportation debacle at any moment, even if only small chunks of concrete start falling on the roadway. If the whole thing comes down at once, it could cost lives, as did the collapse of the new Florida International University bridge three years ago.
Why wasn’t any of this caught during construction inspections? This seems fishy and corrupt.
I was so excited when they first opened the bridge. I was able to use it only once before it closed. I hope the city will do the right thing and have it replaced, knowing that it will not be used again until then is sad.
Someone made the call. “Go cheap Victor, nobody will know”
Who was the Resident Engineer or inspector? How did they allow the wrong concrete and steel? Someone had to sign off on the load tickets and slump...
From a train to bridge nothing in California can be built in right.
Just typical government incompetence and over reach. Now million$ later taxpayers are stuck with the bill. Someone needs to be accountable. In real life, they would be fired. That needs to happen in this circumstance too.
They let the New East Bay Bridge in SF open even though the wrong everything was used on it.
How was something THAT unsafe allowed to be built, and opened?!
It also seems that, the pillars and I-beams should be able to be used for a new proper path constructed.🤨
How is the new bay bridge holding on?
Gavin Newsome approves this message.
Who is the City official hired, approved of the contractor & the inspection of this bridge? The person & the team needed to be fired and the contractor needs to be charged for fraud.
The City caught the nonconformance and demands a rebuild at the contractor's cost. Why do city officials need to get fired for doing their job correctly? It's like you hiring someone to build a fence for you, and he did a crappy job. You demanded it be rebuilt, but your wife divorces you for screwing up the fence.
I bet majority of that money did not go into building the bridge.
Someone needs to lose their job and hired contractor fired and pay for new bridge but not do the work!
Oh we know who's gonna get stuck paying for it . . .
gr33d and c0rrpt10n cause it pass inspection?
Wait a minute! WTF is wrong with the bridge specifically? Show us pictures! Show us engineering design plans and inspections of construction progression! The bridge is finished and complete! How F'd up is it?
is light weight rebar the same as FRP?
Wait until a train goes across it. Then you will know how faulty it really is. Or not.
Lol... who's going to pay for it.... we all know who's going to pay for it and it's not the people responsible for this mistake. The tax payers will flip the bill for another costly mistake.
I'm pretty sure the same type of building material is not used for high speed rails right?
They must want a new one with condos for the homeless
The rail bridge is separate 😎🚲🛴🛹🛼
I cant afford to leave California because of the taxes. I'm financially land-locked to this hellhole and I HATE IT!!!
Makes no sense... Move
What a stupid comment. You can and should leave if u hate it so much, but the better thing would be to write letters, vote and petition to change things if you dont like them. Thats America. Work for change and be the change. Quit griping.
