My Truck runs on "FIREWOOD".

  • This truck gets about 1.5 miles per pound of wood, and can run on trash, wood, grass, cow dung and just about any other dry organic material. This is called gasification and is a easy way to make fuel for a vehicle or generator, this simple design can be made at home with easy to find materials. This was the very first time the system had been used, so the constant turning of the starter is only needed when you are first tuning the valves, once tuned the truck started very quick.

Ironically, for a low tech system, this would really benefit from a computer to automatically adjust air/fuel ratios as the fuel quality fluctuates.

I've watched this guy for a few years. I have been completely off grid, in the woods, for the past 5 years and I have tried it all! Lot's of failures, I must say. But I have to admit, I admire this fella, he never gives up and always finds a way to perfect these alternative projects. After a couple months of curse words and tempertantrums, like a toddler, I usually move on to another simpler alternative. But this guy, nope, just keeps goin. Great job Sir! You are truly a man among men.

How hot does the tail pipe get?
I ask because my thought is to have a second flameless reactor with an exhaust heated pipe system in the bottom to cook up more fuel. That would add efficiency to longer trips, if the exhaust was hot enough to cook the solid matter.

    • @MrS22222

I know I'm a bit late to the party but something that may help you out with that idle is an EGR valve plumbed into a fuel bypass system and maybe a belt driven vacuum pump with the actuator attached to the throttle linkage to mimic low rpm so that when you are at closed throttle, you are allowing a higher amount of vacuum to affect the EGR valve. That EGR valve will open to dump the excess fuel gas through an air filter or just into the exhaust stream. It would be very easy to tune with an airflow regulator for the amount of vacuum applied at closed throttle. You could also put a glow plug in the exhaust stream to burn off the excess fuel gas. Just make sure it's upstream far enough to prevent throwing fire out of the tail pipe. It sounds fun on paper, but the last thing you want is to be too close to something flammable and start a fire.

About 30 years ago, there was a guy drove a Ford Thames with a trailer around Australia on directly produced gas generated in a wood burner. The gas producer was in the trailer. The later Australian Ford Thames vans were fitted with an Australian built six cylinder engine versus the original and dreadful V4.
He would start it on petrol ( gasolene ) until the fire was drawing well then change over to the produced gas. If he found a shredded bandag off a truck tyre on the road, he would stop and ram that in for about a 25 mile free bonus.
During WW2 when petrol rationing was full on, many automotive charcoal fueled gas producers were made and sold. I was told that the small four-cylinder engines were not much good with it but the big american sixes and straight eights ran well on it.

    • @Heikki_Finland

There is more room in a boat for the system, spare wood and cargo, but there is no extra wood available off shore, so in that sense this fits better for a car. I like sailboats better anyway than motorized.

The water tanks....not sure I'm clear on that part. (EDIT: Just noticed all the other step videos. Going to check them out). SUBSCRIBED!
Somewhere I have a print out of the actual plans for a gasifier that were issued for use by the public in the UK during WW2. A shown example was basic compact enough to fit on a small tractor. I need to find them. Is for a simplistic build that is easy to remember but seeing the plans again would make it easier to streamline or improve on it.
Unless I end up selling it...gto an old Toyota w/ one of first 22Rs that MIGHT potentially end up being a test vehicle for something like this...be more practical if had the long-bed though.
From what I recall the setup had a hopper-like burner. Air came in the top and outlet near the bottom. The air//gas mix was then sent through an actual radiator...functions exactly like an intercooler since the gas is going to be quite hot. From there it would go through an air filter then directly down the throat of the engine...no carburetor. Throttle is controlled with a simple throttle plate. Could probably take a carb and remove everything above the throttle plate.

Where's the flux capacitor? Kidding aside.. I saw some WW-2 photos of French cars with gas bags on the roof and the generator hanging off the rear.. I think they called it a "Gasogen". Swedish farm equipment uses this system because steady load/rpm drew an even draft over the flame which helped produce a steady flow of CO gas. This works well at steady speed/flat land.
