I have a ThinkPad Edge e530 with the same processor, 6 GB ram and a HDD.
I dropped it in a bag when I tripped over a curb.
The DVD tray popped out of its bracket. Popped the tray back into place.
The machine acted like nothing happened!
If you drop a ThinkPad, there will be a hole in the floor.

I had a friend that purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad with an i7-2620m and 4 gigs of ram. He upgraded the ram to 8 gigs, and replaced the 500 gb 5400rpm HDD with a 128 gig SSD. He spent roughly $250 on his, which is a really great deal considering low end laptops (or as I like to call them, craptops) start around that price for nowhere near the same level of performance.
Just found the exact config online, it was the Lenovo ThinkPad T420. ;)

I assume that's without the SSD and without the memory upgrade? These older machines are now being drug back out into the world and being used again, so prices are starting to explode on them...no more T400 for $5, they're $100+ now and no hard drive and no RAM LOL, oh and no battery and no charger either, you want to use the laptop you are going to have to spend a few hundred bucks to get it working again because the seller is going to steal all the parts off it first and resell those separately to make more $$$...see it all the time on ebay.

My mom had a ThinkPad slightly older than this one with the older ThinkPad keyboard and damn was it ever an excellent machine! Aged far better over the 7 years than you probably think it would. They’re such good machines.
If I had the money, I would definitely go for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon. Such good hardware.

The best part is, with those looks it is highly unlikely someone would try to steal it.
On the other hand if you are willing to spend a few bucks you can always shop online for spare chassis/carcass parts to rebuild the casing. Here in Latin America there is a popular site called "Mercadolibre" somewhat similar to ebay but exclusive to the region, in which used computer equipment/parts sell almost for nothing in some cases.....

Have been using the X220 for the past couple of years. Almost the same specs too, the only differences being a newer SSD and a 2nd gen i5. I have to say it has been exceptionally good.
I needed a laptop good enough to use it as my main computer while a computer science student but also small enough to be able to easily move it around (in classes, transport, holidays etc). Its performance was really amazing. I also installed Linux (Ubuntu had no hardware incompatibilities apart from a minor bluetooth lock that was easily fixed) which was a huge plus considering speed, utility and that their desktops perform well on lower display specifications. Nothing in its price that I know of comes even close.
What I have to mention though are some minor problems that after 2 years started to accumulate and made the experience somewhat worse. The strength of the Wifi is really bad (my 3yo cheap smartphone has a greater range) and the speakers volume is considerably low (again even in comparison to my smartphone). Additionally, by now the laptop gets extremely hot and the battery life has decreased considerably as well. However, have in mind all those hardware issues refer to a similar model that was bought refurbished, runs Linux and has been used extensively.

It was originally an X220T, but I swapped out the MoBo for an X230T and changed the front panel to that of an X230T (and also one with a fingerprint sensor :p). I'd estimate it had probably cost me just under $300 total still. "Shady" Chinese sellers are great if you just need parts and not full on tech.

You can easily retrieve license keys from the installed operating system with any of the many free keyfinder utilities. X230s have quite a following and should you wish to repair one they are very easy to work on, not least because the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual) is well written and even specifies screw lengths. If someone gave me on in that condition I'd grab a dead clean donor off Ebay and combine them. If you want to learn how to work on laptops Thinkpads are the best choice as they are designed to be serviced.

This one is 4 years newer than my own "daily driver" laptop (Dell Studio 17). Yes, I have desktop machines, so it's not my only unit. Mine had been dropped, so I had to replace the cover, power board (broken power port) and a couple internal cables. Fan is noisy, and the battery doesn't even take a charge anymore. I actually did buy a 9-cell replacement battery, but once that one ran down it wouldn't take a charge. I actually wonder if the laptop's charging circuit is bad, if I could figure a way to test that.
So I get a laugh when people talk about "old" computers that are newer than anything I have.

Don't the X230's have a smaller screen size, like a 12" screen rather than the 14" or larger in the T-series?

+William Todd I can recomend it ! It is a awesome PC for everyday use and low gaming. It runs almost everything and mine has only 6gb of ram which I'm thinking to upgrade to 16gb to extend his life to a couple more years. And the funniest story is that I got mine for free too, but it wasn't because it is damaged just because a friend of mine changed of laptop and he didn't need it anymore. It was a very nice suprise I got to say! Anyways if you want to buy or something like that it is a very nice option for it's price!
      Hope that this helps!

Thanks for the quick reply, looking forward to getting one, although I highly doubt I'll find one free here where I live, people want a fortune for stuff they want to sell around here.

It is nice to know that I've helped! I got mine for free but it was pure luck... If you find one for cheap it won't be a bad deal.. It would be a nice deal! You should look over online ads of this PC because sometimes good deals show up! If you have further questions be sure to ask me! It is a pleasure to help! And I must say sorry because I haven't seen that you've had aswered mine comment but, better late than ever!

No you can't, there is a "key" there but it isn't the actual activation key. You *can* get the key from the registry (or free software like ProduKey) however.

Something that could somewhat improve the trackpad is installing Windows Precision Drivers. I’m not sure if they work for Windows 7, but if you have a Synoptics TouchPad then they should work on Windows 10.

Im still using X220 tablet until now, Mainly because I like drawing on it. Old thinkpad is kinda pricey here where I live, If I manage to get a good deal of X230 I'd defo get it, and maybe modify the keyboard so I can use the old keyboard instead of the chiclet one,

I've bought the same Laptop last year in acceptable condition (much better than yours lol) for 200€. With a new battery, an SSD and another 4gigs of ram, it cost me 300€, and I'm very happy with that. The battery lasts 5-8 hours (never meausured it though), the build quality is pretty good and the keyboard is very nice. My trackpad is horrible though too^^
The performance is very good too, the i5-3320m really handles everything I throw at him with ease.
I think this notebook delivers a much better package for its price than a new cheap Notebook.

I recently got one and it is actually pretty speedy. The only things that are just terrible about it are the really worn out battery I got with it and the TN panel, which is probably one of the worst I have used.
But these things have great Linux support and I can upgrade or fix most of my problems with it.
