Mark Knopfler wrote this after overhearing deliverymen commenting on the TV's in an electronics store in New York, the TV's were all tuned to MTV, Mark wrote down their comments and wrote this song with it. He wanted the song to sound like ZZ top because they were popular on MTV at the time, but the guitar sound of his Gibson Les Paul was more or less an accident when one of the microphones was accidently left pointing to the floor near the guitar amp. It's Sting singing the higher parts in the intro and throughout the song, he sings "I want my MTV" to the tune of the Police song "Don't stand so close to me", that was also Marks idea stings record company insisted on Sting getting writing credit for it even if Sting did not want it, so this is one of just 2 Dire Straits songs were someone other than Mark has writing credit, the other being "Tunnel of love" that uses "Carrousel Waltz" fronm Rodgers and Hammerstein in the intro

What's The Matter Baby, which didn't appear on any studio album but is on Live At The BBC also has a joint writing credit shared between Mark and his brother David, the band's original rhythm guitarist.

Thanks for another Dire Straits / Mark Knopfler reaction! Firstly, their official video for this track using CGI (a newer technology then) was groundbreaking at that time. The story behind the song according to Knopfler-- Mark was in a large appliance and homewares store in NY, and on one whole wall at the back of the store there were TVs tuned to MTV (Music Television): He overheard a couple of the workers making comments about the musicians in the videos, and how easy those guys had it compared to their own blue-collar jobs (moving TVs, microwaves and refrigerators etc.). Mark grabbed a pen and paper, sat down at a dining set right there in the store, and recorded their remarks verbatim, which became the lyrics of the song. Given that they (Dire Straits) were musicians themselves, singing the lyrics in an MTV video no less, it was very good natured, self-parodic and cheeky! It was also fitting, because in contrast to some of the 'glam rock' of the time, Dire Straits was a 'pub rock' band. Stevens' comments about how the particular sound Mark achieved on his Gibson Les Paul was a 'happy accident' is correct. Looking forward to more Dire Straits reactions including perhaps, "Brothers in Arms" (Live), 'Private Investigations", "You and Your Friend" and "Your Latest Trick" from 'Live-On The Night' (1992-1992); you are missing out if you don't watch those live concert performances! Also, check out "Once Upon a Time in the West" from the Live-Alchemy Concert. 👍💙

Fun Fact ...Sting elaborated on his co-writing credit in a 1987 interview:
Mark [Knopfler] asked me to go in the studio and sing this line, "I want my MTV." He gave me the melody, and I thought, "Oh, great, 'Don't Stand So Close to Me', that's a nice quote, it's fun." So I did it, and thought nothing of it, until my publishers, Virgin - who I've been at war with for years and who I have no respect for - decided that was a song they owned, 'Don't Stand So Close to Me'. They said that they wanted a percentage of the song, much to my embarrassment. So they took it

Deliberately 'ersatz' riff to comment 'how easy it would be' to make a fortune rather than sweat for a living! The inimitable Sting contributed and sang (see the 'Live Aid' live performance). Historically one of the first published DDD non-classical recordings, made at famous AIR Montserrat and AIR London.

I’d like to hear your take on a sadly neglected sleeper from that era: “One Last Cold Kiss” on the album “Flowers of Evil” by Mountain.

Now that you've reacted to the studio version of Money For Nothing, listen to this live version from the 1990 Knebworth concert:

And yes, that is Eric Clapton playing second guitar

The best thing to happen in music is the back beat. Drums and bass rule. Just my opinion.

Terry is credited only with the opening drum sequence and the fills per the Engineer Neil Dorfsman.

I'd also hazard that BiA sounds like Terry more than Omar.
