Outfight what couldn't be outrun, great balance of design. With diesels,Lutzow could increase speed from cruising to flank, immediatly.a steam driven ship has to fire up boilers.Big advantage.Unlike her sisters,Lutzow has a big bridge, the best looking of the three, great ship, thanks DR

Really enjoyed the presentation but I felt it was a bit rushed. Another 5 seconds on each picture would give us time to read the text and look at the picture behind. Many thanks for putting this up.

Very good, smart looking ship just love it, sleek hull, and low profile turrets

Very well put together and very interesting. It does give the impression that the RAF mounted one raid that scored a hit but in fact, like the Tirpitz, there were many raids to attempt to sink her.

My father, Robert Milham Horsley was skipper of a 617 Squadron Lancaster 'A' Able that went on raids to attack the Lutzow on April 13, 15 and 16, 1945. 13th and 15th were DNCO, but his near miss 12,000 pounder on the 16/17th sent a shockwave that blew a large hole in its hull, settling the vessel in 30 feet of canal water. His plane returned safely after being hit by flak. After the war, a sailor from the Lutzow, surnamed Ritscher, sent Dad photos of 'L' including one of 'Bruno' 280mm armament and a photo of a drawing he made of Dad's plane attacking.

Dad was on an Urft Dam raid as 'second dickie' (co-pilot) and the bomb they dropped failed to explode. The Germans recovered it for study. After the war, the bomb was taken over by Belgian explosive ordnance staff and today stands outside a Belgian military base entrance!

An tallboy-bomb didn't explode. The Poles found the tallboy-bomb while dredging the canal and had to blow it up in october 2020. Es sind auch Bilder von der Bombardierung der Lützow dabei, look here:

@DrGull1888. For the record my father was an RAF pilot in a Lancaster. He was awarded the DFC for attacking the Lutzow. The entry in his log shows the attack was on the 18th December 1944 when the ship was in Gdynia and attacked by 57 squadron. He had a perfect line on the ship but his bombs staddled the vessel from stern to bow. Untill the internet this was just an entry in a logbook. It's great to see the history of a ship I have known about for many years.

i wonder if the water there is shallow enough for diving? I have looked for divers photos of this ship thus far it seems this wreck is unknown to the diving community.

The wreck hasn't been found. Heck, it was only found in Soviet records that it had been sunk in 2000!
