    I am 84. When I hand sew like that, I tie a knot every few stitches. That way if one stitch gets cut only an inch or so is affected. that works for me

    I just love how a sail rips and you take it so naturally and matter of factly. Other youtubers would have presented this as a major emergency. Then the engine is not working and you just sail anyway haha. Other youtube sailors this would have been a major show stopper and there you are sailing anyways. So nice to see you sisterly sailing by love to see the great relationship there. Keep sailing on !. Fair winds !

    I am now over 65 and watching you and sister Tika enjoying a life on the sea reminds me of my time when I used to use all of my 40 day vacation leave to spend summer at sea on my boat with my 4 children.
    THERE IS ONE THING I WISH ASK YOU (not Mum though) AND TO SHARE WITH YOU
    I live on a very small mostly island, so we can obviously see a relaxing sea view from most places but we also have seen and experienced some of the most unimaginable storms and mishaps, live with our own eyes.
    And so we have an old saying which goes "The see has a soft pleasing belly but a very hard deadly head"
    As you know, unless you’ve figured out a way to skip out on sleep, etc. you’re going to finally have to forego a constant watch while alone (which is technically illegal, but we’ll leave that argument for another day) - and so you’re going to have TO ROLL THE DICE and take a chance that could cost your life because YOU REALLY ARE ALONE OUT THERE.
    So while you need to change the sails or whatever else must be done on deck - Do you at least carry with you - always tied to your jacket - and/or strapped to you waist while in a swimsuite - a Marine grade portable satelite comminication device you could use in an emergency?
    Remember that should one or more things go wrong with your boat, your body (legs or arms etc) or a sudden change in wethere, etc - together or in sequence (which is usually the case) you need to be prepared!
    Even a budget type iridium sat phone such as the Garmin could be used to seek assistance.
    I hope you would read this and reply.
    Much love to you and all your loved once :}

    Another wonderful episode showing Master Mariner Molly and sister Tika enjoying a life on the Ocean waves. Respect to you both for the fun and fortitude you share as shipmates✌No question for your Mom, but, true respect given for the love, and the loving she gave conceiving, raising, teaching, instilling utter confidence, and letting loose not one but two very capable Ocean sailors!⛵ Respect and Regards🏴‍☠May the love the three of you share be as timeless as the tides and as deep as the Oceans and Seas 🌌

    Question for mom: I am so proud of your lovely daughter- as if she were my own. I can only imagine the great sense of pride you must have for her. You certainly have a lovely family. That said, do you sometimes watch her videos and think- oh for Pete’s sake Holly, why don’t you get a backup sail?! Or how about a more reliable engine? There’s no question that she’s as resourceful as they come, but do you ever worry ?

    Was the transition from boat life to land life challenging with three kids who grew up on the water? Also kudos to mom and dad for raising such creative and challenge embracing kids!

  • @MichaelBuck
    @MichaelBuck ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Kudos to the both of you!!! This is REAL LIFE sailing at its finest, none of that "sailing in paradise" and "everything goes as planned" type sailing,. Nothing but the RAW truth of what we sailors really go through on a passage. Being prepared for what will always go afoul is why these two mermaids made it safely to their destination despite what mother nature threw at them.

    Bonjour! Stumbled on your channel via Barry the super cool old seadog... I am 15 videos in and loving every second of your adventure. Really enjoying your sense of humour and your amazing ability to communicate clearly and articulately when detailing the myriad of task required to survive sola on a boat. I live in Newfoundland and you mentioned in an earlier video that you and the fam wintered here when you were younger. For that reason I now feel connected to your oceanic plight to circumnavigate the planet. May the ocean gods be with you... Tell em not to take up too much space, however, because I am coming along for the entire ride 😘

    MOM Question: I am starting my solo circumnavigation in my Grinde 1st July 2023 from The Netherlands. My parents are no sailors and tend to worry about me leaving for three years. Although they are proud of me, they also have difficulties to see me leave. Maybe you can say something about having a solo sailing daughter from your perspective. Holly, I know you're careful, plan your trips, and always track your weather. I see you in very few long weather, or storms like that. But you usually never have more than you and sis, or a friend or maybe two. I know you have your sail dingy, emergency equipment. But one day, do you ever plan on getting maybe a three man life raft, full of supplies. God for bid, that dingy couldn't handle something serious. I know they're pricey, but today they really come with everything you would ever need. Great episode, and stay safe. 🙏 🌊 ⛵

    MOM Question: My first sailing experience on a "big boat" was on a Cal 25 in the mid-70's when I was 12 or so. My family chartered the boat out of Annapolis for a week. It was fine on the Chesapeake Bay, except my Mom kept hitting her head going up & down the companionway. My brother (9 then) and I both loved it and both still enjoy sailing.
    I can't imagine crossing oceans on that boat though! What were your secrets? Food storage? Water? Clothing/laundry?

    I stopped using sail tape and keep sail cloth patches and 3m 75 or 90 around now as you can make larger more durable patches that withstand heavy weather better than sail tape. A French guy showed me this in a remote Anchorage a few years ago after we both got caught in a gale and took shelter in an old abandoned barge harbor on molokai. I used it and sailed for months on the repairs before replacing the sails. The 3m 45 will work but makes for a stiffer patch. Be sure to wipe with alcohol before sticking the patch or sail tape.

    You have horizontal creases in the luff of the sail, which if you are reefed, you shouldn't have, your sail lugs are more likely to break or rip your sail.. you are setting the sail for high wind, so it should be as flat as possible. This happens when you don't ease off the main halyard before winching in the reef outhaul , which you can only do hard on the wind, with the main eased to luff a little.. not going downwind like you were. Pulling down the mainsail whole sailing downwind is asking for sail damage.. Keyboard warrior just sayin' :-) , all those little things can make your sail last a little longer. Welcome to New Zealand !

    A tenacious glue that is waterproof and remains SLIGHTLY flexible when dry is E6000. Direct sunlight will harden it after some weeks. E6000 is sold in the U.S. in tubes like toothpaste tubes. E6000 fixes nearly everything. I also use it for small sewing repairs. Holes in knitted clothing can be fixed with a dot of glue on the inside of the garment. I never darn clothing these days. A dot of glue mashed onto threads holding buttons keeps buttons from EVER falling off. I fix furniture with this glue.

    Grand skies! ❤ you both deserved it. Mum, I am living on a barge, witch is soon becoming a sailing vessel as well. My mother doesn't sleep so well with that idea. But I only sail inlands on lakes and in the tidal seas of Holland and Germany. There's coast guards and resque teams on stand by all the time.
    You are not a landrot, so I imagine you know the dangers from real life that your daughter is handling. So do you sleep well with that ? Even when you see bad weather coming to her position ? Or do you try to avoid thinking about it ?
    Holly, when I see you sailing there, I think to myself... all those people going in to work every day. The same. Like all days rain and no real wind. And those are the lucky ones, supposedly. You're doing a good job girl! Enjoy the contrasts...

    Another great video! Some advice...I think you should invest in a roller furler for your headsail, it makes it much easier and you don't have to leave the cockpit to raise the sail. This is what I have on my Mirage. Also I have all of my sheets going back to the cockpit..Makes life easier, especially in rough weather. I look forward to seeing your videos, I have been watching since day one!
    Enjoy your vacation with your family. Stay safe......from the east coast of Canada 🇨🇦...it's still winter here! Burrrr!

      I think she's doing really well without the roller furler.. they often go wrong, she' is keeping it simple. On a small boat, changing sails is not hard, and you can handle a far greater wind range with 3 head sails, rather than one roller furling sail, and will be much more efficient upwind with hanked on sails..

    Question for mum- what are/were some of your favorite books to read while on passage? Did you instill love of books to Holly? Love Wind Hippie channel and so impressed with Holly's courage solo sailing😊

    Be sure to go to the Great Barrier Island, and find Medlands Beach -- also Steward Island is very sweat, but may be too cold. Loved, loved, loved NZ. Ask Mom, what is her spiritual practice because obvious she much be praying A LOT with a wind hippie like you (said with all good vibes)

    For your mom: how did you manage anxiety with young kids on deck during passages? How quickly did you integrate them into sail handling? Also, I totally love your general zeitgeist on passage 🤪
