In this movie I love how indistinguishable Ripley was from all the other characters in the very beginning, but through the course of the movie her actions demonstrate that she is, in fact, the main character.

A CHARACTER ARC! Somewhat missing in modern films, like Lea "Instant Force expert" Skywalker.
I swear modern story writers haven't bothered to watch ANY classics that "do it right" because they already know "How to do it best"..... these kinds of mistakes reek of "age related arrogance".

@locust76 - True, and it is a movie when if anybody would actually listen to her at the beginning (you know: "don't open the doors" scene ...) - yeah, all of them would actually live to get to another day. Well maybe except the guy with "alien on his face", but that would actually be a acceptable death (in a way)... so we can later look at his body, and investigate it a bit more. Not just opsn the door and deal with issues after that.
But based on the real life approach - it all sounds like some corpo would actually want that specific approach to happen, just simply wait for something like this to happen sooner or later, disregarding the life of employees... (no questions about it at all), or even a public sector company would do (I can imagine all of that too based on my work experience ;)). After all, the data gathered behind that approach could be worth some money (a lot in some cases),
Anyway, a good feedback, and good response from "KatWatchesHorrorMovies" :)

Indeed. First time I watched as a kid, I thought Dallas was the main guy, simply because he was the captain.
This is what O'Bannon was really good at. He also did something similar in Return of the Living Dead. Almost all characters in that movie had a well defined character arc.

One big difference for modern audiences going in is that they know Weaver was the star. Those who saw it on its release had never heard of her, and Scott does a lot to minimize her presence, having her lines spoken off screen and not putting Ripley in the more typically "heroic" mission exploring the planet.

Also, John Hurt's character is the first to wake up, and the camera lingers on him in the "Freezerino" chamber, making the audience think he will be the hero main character of the movie. Brilliant move, I can't think of any other movie who went to such lengths to misdirect the audience... :)

One of the interesting things that Ridley Scott decided to cut because it was too revealing was that about the same moment Kane gets facehuggered Ripley translates the message that Ash and MU/TH/UR "couldn't translate". The message was a warning beacon telling other ships not to come to the planet or land because of an "infestation". Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett (writers) originally had this as another puzzle piece in the coverup by the company. They had relayed the transmission and the company specifically had MU/TH/UR divert course to investigate. This is then why Ripley seems so flustered that they are letting this thing onboard without quarantine because the just had finished translating the message. And of course it was another part when revealed with Ripley gets override access the MU/TH/UR mainframe. The overall theme being that Ripley is the only person who keeps undercutting each move in Ash's coverup and thus why he goes so overboard when near the end.
Ridley Scott decided after some of those scenes were shot to scrap it because it was too many details, and that revealing less left more to the imagination (and then it was all retconned within the rest of the series).

The acting is top notch - and both set and creature design rock. If you see the making off you'll notice that the Alien was "just" a guy in a suit - but the whole movie is shot as to show as little of this as possible, leaving a lot to your imagination, and THAT POS is especially good at making up even more terrible stuff than is there in the first place. :D
Has one of the best plot twists in Film history so far (Bilbo Baggins being a robot!) and even with old style glass Bulb monitors the tech still looks totally believable to be on an actual spaceship in the future.

@@RandsurferThere's this thing called "Lying" where you give a cast a script where things are supposed to play out one way, but then you plan for it to play out another way with everyone else.
The confusion comes from people not specifying what was the omitted part of the script.
The actors were never told that John Hurts chest was rigged with a blood-pack, Veronica Cartwright's scream when it goes off as well as their reactions to it is as authentic as it get.

    • @erikbjelke4411
      @erikbjelke4411 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

"This is rumor control. Here are the facts."
The cast did know what was going to happen, because it was described in a fair amount of detail in the script, and these were all professionals who read the script. However, no one knew what it was going to look like, since no one had ever attempted an effect like it before.
They filmed up until they got John Hurt on the table, then "cut" was called and everyone but John Hurt was told to break for lunch, because he needed to be glued into the rig. Tom Skerritt elected to hang around and watch the effects team work, so he had a better grasp of what was going to happen than the rest of the cast, but even he wasn't certain exactly what was going to be done to achieve the effect.
When the cast came back, they saw the crew all wearing raincoats, plastic bags over all the equipment, and buckets of (not fake, sourced from local butcher shops) blood all over the set, so they knew it was going to get messy.
Veronica Cartwright was told "You'll get a little blood on you," but had the misfortune to stand right in the path of one of the hoses, which sprayed a fair amount of blood straight in her face, much of it in her eye. She stumbled back, fell backwards over a couch, but struggled back to her feet and continued the scene. Nevertheless, her cry of "Oh God!" is pretty genuine, since, you know, she'd just got something like a liter of blood sprayed in her face.
There were a few small hiccups, the chestburster prop not tearing through the first few times, and some of those "bumps" are in the final cut. But the effect worked, worked beautifully (for a given value of "beautiful"), but because no one had ever done anything like it before, the cast were affected on the same level as the audience seeing it the first time.
The chestburster scene is the only reason the film got made (that, and a little movie called "Star Wars" had just come out, and everyone was rushing for any spaceship script they happened to have on hand to get into production). There were definite flaws in the original script, some even calling it unbearably bad, but it had that "one great scene" that everyone loved, and knew if they could get the film up to the level of that scene, they'd really have something. So, no, "the cast didn't know what was going to happen" is categorically false, but there being some Enforced Method Acting in that scene is true.
Basically, like all good myths, there's a kernel of truth the falsehoods take root on.
The "Making Of" documentary on most DVD and Blu-Ray sets clears this up, with the actors talking extensively about the scene and thoroughly debunking this urban legend. Weaver herself actually quotes the script at one point, it was never withheld from the actors.

"Its raining inside?" Well it sure can. I have spent a lot of time on/in ships and in a large ship, the systems for heat and air are so complex and involves so many things that it "rains inside" is not at all a crazy idea. With a huge ship like in the movie humidity and temperature could certainly have water droplets fall from the ceilings. The disturbing part is that people are planning Mars missions despite no real emulated colony experiment actually working during experiments on earth.

As I've heard, they originally wrote the script so that none of the characters were gender specific, giving casting much more flexibility.

Ripley was originally wrote as a male lead. It was stated in the commentary on the director’s cut dvd box set. Sigourney was cast because not only did she knock the character out of the park but at the time, a female lead in a horror film was almost unheard of and they wanted this film to really stand out. It’s a fascinating documentary because it explores everything from the very beginning from simple story concept to this huge production that just took off.

The only trivia I can think of off-hand about this movie is that, apparently, all the slime on the alien is KY Jelly, and the tendon-looking things on its jaw were shredded condoms
Such a classic movie, too. Probably one of the greatest suspense-thriller movies ever made, and it spawned one of the most iconic (to me, anyway) space-action type movies ever made. At least as far as smallish-scale space action goes.

Ellen Ripley, portrayed by Sigourney Weaver, is the central character in the Alien film series. Her role and purpose evolve throughout the films, but her character is often seen as a symbol of survival, resilience, and the will to protect humanity against extraterrestrial threats. Here's a breakdown of Ripley's character purpose:
    1. Survivor and Protector (Alien, 1979)
In the first Alien film, Ripley’s character is primarily a survivor. She is a warrant officer on the commercial spaceship Nostromo, where the alien creature, the Xenomorph, is unleashed. As the crew is picked off one by one, Ripley steps up as a reluctant but determined leader, eventually becoming the sole survivor. Her purpose here is to endure and defeat the alien, ensuring no one else falls victim to it.
    2. Moral and Ethical Compass (Aliens, 1986)
In Aliens, Ripley becomes more of a protector, especially to Newt, a young girl she finds on a colony ravaged by Xenomorphs. Her maternal instincts and sense of responsibility are central to her purpose in this film, as she not only fights for her survival but also for the survival of others. She takes on a leadership role in guiding a group of marines and civilians to safety, making her both a fighter and a caregiver.
    3. Humanity vs. Corporations (Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection)
Ripley’s character in the subsequent films (Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection) also explores themes of corporate greed and exploitation. The Weyland-Yutani Corporation, which seeks to harness the Xenomorphs as biological weapons, becomes a constant adversary. Ripley’s purpose here shifts to stopping not only the aliens but also the people trying to control them for profit.
    4. Self-Sacrifice and Redemption (Alien 3)
In Alien 3, Ripley’s role takes on a more self-sacrificial tone. When she discovers that she is carrying a Xenomorph queen embryo, she chooses to end her own life to prevent the alien from being used by the corporation. This act of self-sacrifice is a significant moment in her character arc, highlighting her commitment to protecting humanity, even at the cost of her life.
    5. Hybrid Identity (Alien: Resurrection)
In Alien: Resurrection, Ripley is cloned and brought back with alien DNA mixed into her genetic makeup. This version of Ripley struggles with her identity as both human and part alien. Her purpose here becomes more complex as she battles the Xenomorphs while dealing with her own hybrid nature.
    Overall Purpose:
Ripley’s ultimate purpose throughout the Alien franchise is to serve as a resilient, ethical, and determined force of survival and protection against the alien menace. She evolves from a mere survivor to a symbol of humanity’s fight against uncontrollable and deadly forces, both alien and corporate.

"Most animals retreat from fire" Alien: Hold my beer whilst I slide through these air vents towards the flamethrower wielding hooman.
It quickly became canon that aliens don't like fire but I was never convinced. Ash was protecting the alien so I doubt he would have suggested using fire if he really thought it would work or would do it any harm. He studied the face hugger so would have had a pretty good idea what would or would not have worked.
Also, the alien was lucky that it was Ripley who ended up in the shuttle and not Dallas. Dallas spent a lot of time in the shuttle so he probably would have spotted the alien and done something about it whilst it was still "sleeping".

17:34 - Not rain, exactly. I imagine he's in a cooling/life-support system maintenance area. There could potentially be high humidity and a large amount of condensation as pipes of different temperatures are routed through there. It's a very large vessel, so there would be a vast network of coolant pipes leading everywhere, condensing water from the air. Or, the room could just be a great big dehumidifier, collecting excess atmospheric water from various areas of the ship.

      @Henrik_Holst 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

it's the loading bay, people have theorized for a in movie explanation that it was exposed to the environment of LV-426, the "real world" answer is simply because Ridley wanted a water scene: "Ridley Scott wanted to have water in their, and didn't really feel like it needed an explanation. When he sold it to the producers, he said it was condensation from broken mechanisms. It's an old ship, with many quirks and faults, and that was one that the crew was willing to put up with before they fixed it in port." (taken from the dvd commentary track).

Great reaction to this great movie. Your thoughts about the cat and Ripley saving the cat are spot on. A screen writer actually wrote a book on how to write screenplays called Save The Cat based on the idea that the audience is far more invested in the main character if that character cares about something as much as this cat and does everything to protect it. For a recommend I would say Breaking Away 1979, it looks like a movie about bicycle racing but it is not.

Anyway, there was a working elevator.
As a young boy I loved to wonder. Find and see things. The doors opened and I got in. (not in a free candy kinda way) I pressed all the buttons!!
Dad found me almost an hour later (after he finally realized I was gone) on the elevator. I had pressed soooooo many buttons that it stopped on every floor TWICE! Once once on the way up. And again on the way down. The early 80's y'all. Miss those times.

"In the famous "chestburster scene" from the movie Alien (1979), the cast was not fully informed about what to expect. The scene in question involved the character Kane, played by John Hurt, experiencing a violent and unexpected alien birth. The reactions of the other actors in the scene were genuine because they were not fully aware of the extent of the special effects that were going to be used. Ridley Scott, the director, intentionally kept some details of the scene hidden from the cast to capture authentic reactions of shock and horror, making the scene even more intense and memorable."
