- Right in the middle of uptown Charlotte, in the shadows of office towers and condos, is a very popular spot for walking, biking, picnicking, or just relaxing - Romare Bearden Park. You know the name, but just who was Romare Bearden?
Romare Bearden the man was born in Charlotte in 1911 at 401 South Graham, only a few blocks from the park, near what is now Bank of America Stadium. Bearden’s amazing journey to becoming one of the most famous visual artists of the 20th Century began in Charlotte, but it was in New York City where his artistic vision was realized. That’s where his family moved when he was still a young boy.
Bearden attended school in Harlem and actually finished high school in Pittsburgh, where his family moved when he was a teenager. He graduated from New York University in 1935 with a degree in mathematics. Bearden’s career in the world of art began when he worked as a cartoonist for the humor magazine, Medley. Bearden also freelanced for several newspapers and magazines.
