    Thank you for your contribution to the aviation community, your videos are 100. Totally enjoyed your presentation and perspective on bringing together a sim setup. Also your refreshing viewpoint on learning to fly is much needed. Many folks to do not have a money tree in the backyard so your analysis is spot on.

    Thanks Kimelj your video Vol 1 and 2 are very interesting, I have about half that set up but find it allows me to fly with some sort of realism. At the moment I'm trying to get into Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, that's giving me some headaches but I'm getting there.

      Thanks and yes the more functional parts you add the more realistic you can make simulation. I beta tested MSFS2020 with all the stuff in the video and have to say I am holding off for a while until they get things all ironed out. You will get there and MSFS2020 is an amazing sim!

    Just wanted to say that u have one of the coolest and best flight sim setups I've seen. I've always been into flight sims since they very 1st came out on pc. I plan on building another sim soon, and u have given me something to strive for, but awesome stuff man, love it. By the way my name is Allen, my wife and i share her youtube account so that's why the name says Deborah. Anyway thx for the great information.

      Allen thanks for viewing. Yes, sims are getting better and better. I will say this setup if highly functional but there are some individuals that really make their looks aesthetically like real cockpits! Do like me and get a little at a time and it will begin to grow and take shape. Happy simming!!

    Wondering what your thoughts are on this as a starting setup: 1. As you pointed out, a Proper gaming PC, 2) Yoke, but the minimum standard now is the Honeycomb yoke. At $250 it’s not that much more than anything cheaper, but blows them away in feel, resolution & noise, and is 80% as good as the $1000+ yokes. 3) I like your suggestion of the realistic action of the Saitek Cessna rudder pedals, 4) $200 24” or so touch screen to function as most instruments on instrument panel, 5) that touch screen runs in conjunction with Air Manager software ($65) that allows you to display and interact with a HUGE range of flight instruments on that touch screen, from a 6 pack to a radio stack, to a GPS, to you name it, 6) $100 “Knobster” which gives you a physical knob that will work ANY of the knobs on the touch screen, 7) Throttle quadrant, even if it’s just the $60 Logitech, and 8) A primary monitor if you don’t already have one for looking out the windshield. Ideally, minimum of 40” or 34” ultra wide screen. I definitely want to build toward as many physical controls as possible, rather than the touch screen, so it’s more like an actual plane, but the combination of a touchscreen, Air Manager, & Knobster can keep that initial cost down by a lot and then I’ll add on physical instruments as money allows. Thoughts??

    • @klmelj
      @klmelj  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. You do not need an all-out gaming computer but something that will be within spec of the sim you are trying to fly.
      2. Any yoke, just to note I got my PPL a few hours over minimums only because of weather and plane issues. I Blew 50 hours on just flying around and got my IR(Instrument Rating) a few ours over minimums. Partially because I had to fly 2 hours to get to my checkride 😊.
      3. Rudder pedals are a must.
      4. Touch screen are great $$ savers but most GA airplane do not have touchscreen and to me I like the feel of spinning a knob like I would in a plane. I heard about the knobster and seems cool. Going that route will save you a good deal of money. To note though I did not spend as much as people think I spent on my FIPs personally like them over a touch. I did touch with a Ipad app before getting my FIPs and at the time knobster did not exists.
      5. Yes to knobster if you do not go with physical gauges from Saitek or any other company.
      6. Yes quadrant it great addition.
      7. Any monitor will work. To mention again go my PPL with my sim prior to having a bigger monitor and it was only a 23’’. Keep in mind the larger monitor you go with the better GPU you need if you are going to be pushing out quality images.
      You seem very sold on making this as realistic as possible and that is fine. Functionality and Realism do go hand in hand, but some realism is not need for the sim, if you are trying to get your PPL. Save that money for some real flying time.

      Daryl Lonigan thanks for checking out my videos. I am actually on beta now for FS2020. Looks like you are starting out on the right foot. They are the garmin 530, garmin 430 combo. The only immediate difference is the screen size and the first page on the Nav menu. Other than that, they are pretty much the same. If you are trying to save a few bucks just go with the 430. If not go with the 530, it is only $20 more. Happy building!

    Yoke and throttle set plus rudder is gonna be about $300 on Ebay.
    I don't know where I'm going from there...lol

    I appreciate your time and the decades are flowing I've never had autopilot. In a sense on a calm day oncr the airplane is trimmed it's mostly flying itself. And even the Kodiak autopilot needs constant monitoring and adjustments as it sinks. My investments going to have to be much more to start with since I have no computer or internet I'm very rural. I need a tower to get a signal. LOL
    I found a computer I have the option of 2 terabytes or 512 solid state. As reading most Gamers like solid state but you said two terabytes dedicated to just scenery that's a lot of data. I'm computer stupid since I'm old. If it's dedicated just too scenery what's operating everything else?? Scenery is mostly what I'm after. I already can fly but I want to go places I'll never get too. And I want the visual as real as possible or that experience. As for the rest of the cockpit I'll likely combine the looks of both my airplanes instrument panels. And both the 3/4 P51 and the bush plane are stick. I'm just hung up on what to do for the computer?
    I have to ask, you don't have to answer. You wouldn't by chance live in Arizona? If so what city? I ask because I thought I seen the Arizona flag "hiway's" on your other t-shirt in your first video. I grew up and live there for almost 55 year's. I'm now on the Ozarks.
    Thanks again.

      @klmelj  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, this went to spam/held for review. So, just seeing it. The solid state drives normally give you faster read and write. I am not worried about that wanted a cheaper option for 2TB that solid state does not. Apples to Apples at the time SSD was pricer than HDD. Now it is only a little more for a normal SSD. The sim is still operating everything else and it is loaded on the C: drive. I just have my sim pulling the location of the scenery from the HDD. As far as the computer get the best you can get and really focus on a good graphics card. I live in Georgia, yeah I wear many different state T's.

    Can you connect multiple Saitech panels into a USB hub or do they all need dedicated USB ports in the computer?

    • @klmelj
      @klmelj  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the panel and the hub. If the hub is a 1.5A then about 3 or 4 normal panels will work fine as long as you do not have any Flight Instrument Panels plugged in. If using a Flight instrument panel on a 1.5A then I would only do one and probably 1 or 2 regular panels. If you are using a 2A or more hub then you can get away with 2 Flight Instrument Panels. To put things in more perspective. I had to get 4 - 1.5A 7 port hubs and 1 - 3A hub. I have no more than two Flight instrument panels in each. With the 3A hub having two Flight Instrument Panels with 4 other panels plugged in. Everything else is either plugged into the yoke or in usb ports on my machine. Everything is USB 2.0 or 3.0. No 3.1 hubs. Oh and the FIPS pull about .5A so if you plug in more than two on a 1.5A hub you will probably have power issues or lockups that will require a power cycle on the FIP.

    I have 10 of the FIPs, but I don’t find the SAITEK scripts available online very useful. Do you use online scripts for each of your FIPs? If so, which ones do you recommend. Also, do you then customize any of the FIPS buttons?

    • @klmelj
      @klmelj  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They are not 100% accurate. So you will have to play around with the formulas for each plane to get them to output the correct data. If you do that I would back them up :). I spent hours with calculations before getting them right. So yes had to customize mine. I also used some from fsxtimes. He makes some good plug and play ones.

    I jwant to instrument fly And have a setup that would be like the aircraft I use. The actual aircraft has Garmin 430 and 2 G5 units and a com/Nav 2 with a VOR. I’m thinking the real sim 430 and 7 Saitek instruments - HSI, AI, Tach. VSI, alt. ASI, TC. I don’t need the second radio. I will just use the 430 as my sole com and Nav. Will this work?

      When I originally tried air manager a while ago it was just a touchscreen version of a 6-Pack. Which to me was not transferable to a real aircraft as far as physically turning dials. Not sure if they have added that but I know you can do Knobster now which was not there when I first tried AirManager. That being said for the price I paid for my 6-Pack vs Buyer Air Manager/Knobster/Ipad. I came out about the same and yes would prefer individual Saitek Gauges. If I had to do it again and not find a deal on a 6 pack I probably would do Air Manager and Knobster.

    So reality xp is a software upgrade for say the Garmin Gns 430 in xplane, and when you drag the upgraded software into the real sim gear you have those upgrades available on the unit too. Is that how the reality xp works?

    • @klmelj
      @klmelj  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      lildeena1 Yes realityXP is upgrading the underlying garmin functionality. It works by downloading the garmin sim trainer and technically using that as the garmin screen. From there you will install the fsx or xplane plugin to have the trainer properly interact with the sim. Only downside is the nav database. It is older and does not match current nav. I have an updated dB that can be installed that get you 2016 nav which almost 100% matches current approaches. Hope this helped...

I have a knee injury which pretty much doesn't let me use my left leg very much so I can't use rudder pedals which is why I've always picked sticks with a rudder control on the throttle. Is it possible at all to fly with a yoke without using rudder pedals and what would I use for rudder instead?

      Thanks for watching. I am sure you will be able to map a button on the yoke that will solve your issue.My answer is really dependent on the yoke you will be getting. So that being the unknown I will use mine as an example. My yoke has a hat switch that allows you to quickly look around and it has a switch the move up/down/left/right below the hat switch. I would use that one. Left/right could be your rudder inputs and up/down can be your breaks. I hope this helps and happy flying.

      @@sypharorigin The Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas 4 is a joystick and throttle in one. The throttle has a rocker (I think they are called rockers) behind it you could use for rudder control. While a bit expensive if you just use it the throttle it would however be a great solution for your problem. The Joystick itself is also not to bad. Thrustmaster also has a stand-alone throttle the TWCS Throttle with a rocker. However it about the same price as the joystick.

      @Daryl Lonigan Nice! yes I have said it over and over to people that saitek will work on 3.0 and 2.0 is not required. I do have a 2.0 motherboard card but it was from an older computer I wanted to reuse for more usb ports. Now I have had problems with 3.1. I do use Spad for FSX but logitech drivers for XP11. Hope you get your build up quickly.

      @Daryl Lonigan Cool you will have to remove all of the Saitek/Logitech drivers. They do not play well as you see. The saitek/logitech driver is called DirectOutput. Remove that and you should get stable performance from Spad.Next.
