I love the Decemberits so much dude. The direction they took their sound could not be closer to the music I adore. The old stuff is great, and I mean REALLY GREAT, but this is the one band whose new music gets me thrilled beyond measure. Long live the Decemberists!
I agree, Chris. I've seen a lot of comments bashing The Decembersists over this album. The lyrics, the melody, the energy... It's all so damn good. I really hope they add some more stops to their tour, because it would break my heart if I didn't get to see them in Idaho again.
While this isn't my #1 Decemberists song, it's definitely in my Top 5 and probably THE most underrated song from the band. I think the lyrics, at first glance, seems a bit cliche and superficial (Gray Jane, an independent-minded young women meets the man of her dreams but he's not into her or maybe he's not available. Then later some other guy pursues her but she's unavailable for some reason.) But deep down, I think this isn't the whole point Meloy is trying to convey. He's trying to lament that the timing is often not right: we run into great opportunities in life but we can't take advantage of those opportunities if the timing is off. The raining falling on the "Wrong Year" symbolizes this, and ultimately, I think in this way this song ties into the bigger message he's sending with his album about how how terrible and yet beautiful our world is.
I think this new stuff is brilliant and nothing makes me laugh more than seeing comments like...oh, it sounds like REM or it sounds like Van Morrison. What song doesn't sound at least a little like some other song? Besides that they have always acknowleged a REM influence. I cannot wait to see them in Portland in March. To my way of thinking, they are the best band going right now, and it's been a very long wait for new stuff. I'm just going to enjoy the music and let others nitpick.
Peter Buck from REM actually worked on the King is Dead. There are a couple of songs on that album in particular that have a very clear REM influence. That's not a bad thing. I love REM. One of the best alt rock bands of all time.
I heard a song at an airport, thought it was Verticle Horizon. Did a quick Shazam and put my curiosity to rest. It was this band and this song which I had never heard of. Very good song. It took me back to REM and VH’s days.
I love this band.. My (ex)girlfriend an I split about a month ago and I can't get over it, I cried listening to this in my car today.. not too macho to admit.
I've been a Decemberists fan for a long time, I love all their albums in their own right. But none of the songs off their new album have grabbed me at all so far. I had the same feeling to some extent with The King is Dead, an album which I love now. It also might be a case that the entire album will need listening to in its entirety to get the feel of it.
Yeah... I'm the same way. I would love this stuff if I knew they were still able to write like they used to. Where'd all the stories go? And why is it all lovey dovey now?
***** Red Right Ankle, Of Angels and Angles, and countless other songs are WAY more 'lovey dovey'. I agree it's an adjustment to a new sound for them, but I felt that way as early as Crane Wife.
***** Colin attributes the more introspective tunes to the fact that his novels were his storytelling outlet for a good chunk of the last several years. You can read about it in his Rolling Stone interview here: rol.st/1v95p4L
I see the plot of the album. They intentionally to make the album more REM-like to attract REM veterans like me who loved their IRS and early-Warner age product (hey, Out of Time or Automatic for the People, or Murmur).
The homemade puppet show look they have in this video is an interesting one. Most lyric videos are pretty bland, but this has some thought put into it. I like it!
I heard this song, immediately went out and bought a pair of thick black framed glasses.. Within 5 hours I had a bushy beard and a hacky sack appeared magically next to my shins. I could quote Pablo Neruda and had an insatiable hunger for quinoa. My armpits smelled like patchouli and I had no desire to have children.. I looked in the mirror and I saw my....
I didn’t know what eidolon was until this song... when I first heard it I misheard him and thought he said “slip me an eidolon and I’ll sleep” so I thought it was a sleeping pill LOL
what does this song mean? Girl likes a guy, but he doesn't like her. Then, in another year, the guy likes the girl, but now she doesn't like him. Basically, the plot of a number of TV series'.
+scottysols Maybe they do like each other, very much, but can't be together because of other obligations. The timing is never right. A horrible soap opera plot.

This song is one of the weaker points on the new album, for me. There's something overly twee and meh about it. It's not awful, just... eh. 'The Lake Song', 'Mistral', and 'Make You Better', however, are fantastic.

couldn't agree more with you!!

I love the band so much..listening to them got me through some rough times in my life I will be a fan as long as possible.
I bought this album on iTunes. Best decision ever!!!
Love this video & song. Such beautiful animation of the lyrics
aaahh I love this band
Underrated.. Such an awesome sound. Always come back to this album

Dean Jackson how was the show
Agreed. Great album when released and still is now. Fantastic band.

Van Morrison, don't hear that but very very REM like. Just not as good as REM, that's not a put down.

I hope things have leveled out for you and you have moved onwards and upwards. I wish nothing but the best for you!
Had the same experience in 2024, my friend. Here's to all the melancholy millennials who came of age listening to The Decemberists.
22 years ok, I miss him, I handled it, he wanted both , he left me, got re married and still tried to keep me for 7 years none successful
Beautiful art and excellent song 😊❤️🎶☀️
this album won't leave me alone.
I love their music so much !...
This is what music is. These guys must have Scottish ancestry cos this hits me square in the chest.

Brent Palucki I think he's just becoming more autobiographical.

This is amazing!

Songs great though, and the wrongness of this year won't last forever I'm sure
Great song
LOVE ALL THEIR MUSIC, AN AMERICAN FAN
I'm Zimbabwean. Still for me, one of the best bands in the world
The homemade puppet show look they have in this video is an interesting one. Most lyric videos are pretty bland, but this has some thought put into it. I like it!
Great Song I´m a fan now
Currently going through this, hopefully things change
Enjoy the record today all, it's a good one.
The song is nice, but golly, this is the prettiest lyric video I've ever seen!
This new album is sort of The Decemberists Do Van Morrison so far, yeah? I am DIGGING IT.
So I'm not the only one who hears Van Morrison in this?? Okay, good!
Niko Watson No you are not along. I hear Van Morrison all over this.
2:37
How long has this band been around?? I never heard them before. They're amazing!!
Pleasant s'prise.
I am 1,000% digging the 18th century quilt vibe they've got going on. It's bitchin'!

fraud1980 ha! brilliant!
Don't forget the wardrobe full of flannel. Lots of flannel.
fraud1980 I really don't know why people keep implying The Decemberists are a "hipster" band when they've had 3 top 20 albums.
I love the Decemberists, hipster or not.
Reverend Park they're not a hipster band, just a dork band for people who cry a lot for no reason.
i want that this song becomes popular but at the same time i dont , i just want this band for me , is that too selfish?
+Giselle Diaz Um, The Decemberists have been big for over a decade
+jake b not really, though. They're decently popular, but not really 'big'.
Giselle Diaz aw no lol 😂 I'm like that with the Head and the Heart. They're very similar and amazing. But I get what u mean
Night Rose you understand me my friend!!!!
yeah
Why are the comments on for this one but off for most of the other songs owned by the band?
This aged well. :) :( :)
Are you done...good...im glad your done...stay done
What do you mean?
Whoa
I didn’t know what eidolon was until this song... when I first heard it I misheard him and thought he said “slip me an eidolon and I’ll sleep” so I thought it was a sleeping pill LOL
Who is Gray Jane?
Theres a Little Big Planet secret bubble hidden somewhere in this video, right?
What is a river child? I could not find any kind of answer in google.
It's just a lyric. No biggie
all around me. trust in The Force
makes me think of closing time by semisonic
Anyone else getting light Crowded House vibes?

there is no normal life... just life
If you can play the song with just a guitar and the singer, then its a good song. Just my opinion.

Total Morrisey rip-off. (I'mma let you losers figure out which specific song I'm talking about) But such a wonderful song that idc lol a
Love it. Such a beautiful sound and deep lyrics!
