TTC Stomp on the Thwomp 0xA

  • We collect the star Stomp on the Thwomp in TTC using 0 A presses. This is TAS. This improvement reduces the total A press count for collecting 120 stars from 15 to 14. Warning: This video contains many fast-forwards and rapid pausing, leading to flashing lights.
This TAS was possible thanks to the following people:
➤ Marbler, for creating the plan and TASing the segments above the lower squish cancel ground pound chain. ( / supermarble94 )
➤ myself, for TASing the segments below the lower squish cancel ground pound chain.
➤ Sjmhrp, for TASing the lower squish cancel ground pound chains. ( / @sjmhrp7583 )
➤ ds273, for figuring out how to get onto the thwomp without a star dance clip. ( / @ds27315 )
    ➤ fifdspence, for TASing the beginning of CCM. ( / @fifdspence )
This video is an improvement from the previous strat that did this in 1 A press ( • TTC Stomp on the Thwom... ). Since then, Marbler worked out a very complex plan to do the whole thing in 0 A presses. This plan is too intricate to explain every detail here, but the main theme is that we ascend the level, place the HOLP, drop back down, remotely throw clones to that HOLP, then repeat. We use explosion clones to induce and preserve hitstun, fire clones to enable Mario to do a midair fire bounce, and coin clones to heal HP. Additionally, we repeatedly drop bob-ombs out of bounds so that they snap back to Mario as soon as he goes close to them again. This allows us to ascend the level and then summon the bob-omb to where we are. If you want to see the steps of the entire plan, here's an image of it: imgur.com/ZlnIgvw
Note that I've taken some steps to aid in viewer understanding of what's going on. These include:
    (1) Making certain walls temporarily see-through.
    (2) Adding auxiliary screens when Mario goes off camera.
    (3) On the auxiliary screen that shows Mario, making Mario have a vanish cap during the frames on which he's considered off-camera (when the HOLP doesn't update).

    • @aurafox1
      @aurafox1 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhn Well, while there's definitely truth to the fact that inputs are easier to recreate, things like RNG manipulation have to be figured out all over again if the timing is even a frame off, such as when you have to take an extra step to setup something for a future step.
The real reason is that's just the way Tick Tock Clock is. Nearly every star requires you to just climb higher than the last time.

@@byrontheusurper6505 Welcome to the Super Mario 64 A Button Challenge! The rules are simple: collect all 120 stars in as few A presses as possible. Anything else, glitches included, is fair game. A is the main jump button, so this severely limits Mario's vertical movement. Stomp On The Thwomp is the most vertical star of the most vertical level in the game, so the strats required to do it are just ridiculous, way beyond real comprehension by a layman. It took almost a decade to even figure out how to do it, and it takes a TAS (Tool Assisted Speedrun, prerecorded inputs played back perfectly) more than 6 hours to finish!
As of this video, there are now 14 A presses left in the entire game.

Lots of people commenting on how monumental an achievement this is (and it certainly is) but what I am most impressed by is how breathtaking the strategy is. The plan involves gaining the ability to "summon" the bob-omb remotely to reset the HOLP at will and use that, combined with lots of cloning, to climb the level. Each new height reached requires recursively repeating the previous steps, so the whole thing has this incredible spiral structure. Very cool. The final ascent is so cool too, especially the part where the momentum from the bomb-omb grabs propels Mario across gaps. I literally gasped at some of the moments at the end. Truly awesome to watch, bravo.

Unbelievable. When I first started getting interested in Mario 64, the first A-press save I was there for was SOTT 6x with the Pedro spot, way back in 2015. Never did I think I'd be sitting here, on a late night in 2022 after seven years of fascination with this game (both as a viewer and TASer myself), watching that same star get obliterated 0x.
This wasn't one new tech that blew the star up, it was the culmination of an absurd number of ingenious ideas, pulling together every tool available and pushing their limits, all to systatically pass each & every obstacle.
This star truly feels like a celebration of everything this game has given us, and the immense progression of understanding and ingenuity which has been achieved over these years.
Brilliant work everyone involved. Truly brilliant. A monumental achievement many years in the making, and I'm glad I could be still here to see it!

There are 14 A presses remaining, now there are only 11 unique A presses or technically 14 and all to be saved, and TASers can't believe they finally done Stomp on the Thwomp without using a single A press, or 0x A Presses.
