My nick name is SONNY, Johnny and I went to COMMERCE HIGH SCHOOL together and sang all through school; I even sang in Johnny's singing group (four PR's and one Italian!) I loved it,and so did Johnny. " The night is quiet" was sang throghout Commerce HS, but no one sang it like us! I was there when Johnny made his second album, and could not take my eyes off this GREAT performer!
I went to many of Johnny's shows in Manhattan and the Bronx, and even watch him perform on a dance cruise; nothing could stop this great man! I had two bands at my wedding, January 1969, and Johnny and his band honored my wife and myself by performing for one solid hour of the best latin music in the world! I miss, and love him SIEMPRE! Morris (SONNY) Schwaber.
I remember The Jonnie Colon Band playing this entire LP in 3 sets. They were playing all over manhattan and the Bronx. (1967).
We Like it Like That - The Story of Latin Boogaloo brought me here. I can't believe Iv'e been missing out on this music my whole life and have just been turned on to it by this documentary. Simply fantastic.

He was my music teacher in high school
I remember this song when I was about six or seven, never knew the name of it or understood the words either because of the cheap transistor radios of the 60's, I am watching a documentary called America reframed the history of Latin Boogaloo. They played this song and I liked to have fell out of my chair. I thought I would never hear this song again. I feel blessed to have this rare treat to hear again.

If I were stuck on an Island and I had only song it would be this one. I wish T%T had never left the band. I listen to the original version almost every day. I have it set up that this is the only song played at my funeral. The only thing I do not like about this version is that he added trumpets and it sounds like he took the song up an octave. One does not mess with the Mona Lisa. Then why mess with the one song that represents my generation. I spoke with Mr. Johnny Colon after one his shows a few years ago. He told me he was going to modernize it. I wanted to cry. I wanted to tell not to mess with perfection This tune is more than song. It represents an era, a culture, the urban sound.
I agree Mike. This is the tune and the album that took me and my boys into the Latin music world. Johnny was our idol.

It needs Tito Ramos on that vocal to make it pop (in my humble opinion). The brass section could do with some distance between the roots and major thirds - about an octave apart would do nicely. Hey - respect to the man who I am so glad to be seeing still doin' his thing. I only say this because I not only remember this record / song ... not only have I worked with Tito Ramos myself but I am able to play it in my head chord for chord - beat for beat - break for break exactly as I heard it all them decades ago. It's like I can even hear the room that it was recorded in! Boogaloo Blues, the Meditation, el Watusi, Bang Bang, I like It Like That ... magic moments in 60s Salsa without doubt ;-)

Compañero al parecer usted no ha escuchado toda la música que ha compuesto Johnny Colón es muchísimo más brava y quiero recordarle que Johnny no se dejó envolver en la porqueria que llaman salsa este señor conserva los ritmos de antaño algo que Willie Colón dejó olvidado.
Amigo el maestro Johnny Colon su musica es de la epoca de oro de la salsa no se puede borra pero tambien en la epoca de Willie Colon con Hector LaVoz su musica sera siempre la brava.
Amigo los dos son bueno especialmente en la epoca de oro de la salsa en la decada de los años 60 y70 la salsa brava.

Compañero, yo si he escuchado la música de Johnny Colón, porque realmente lo admiro, pero sus comentarios de que "su música es muchísimo más brava", "no se dejó envolver en la porqueria que llaman salsa" y "conserva los ritmos de antaño algo que Willie Colón dejó olvidado", son absolutamente subejtivos, carentes de todo argumento musical válido. Me molesta mucho la gente que se considera erudita y cree que eso les da derecho a despotricar impunenemte... Los dos Colón son muy buenos y es absurdo tratar de ponerlos en discordia...Bochinchero!
