Actually the most modern version of MiG-31 is the MiG-31K which was demonstrated a few days ago in Moscow's Victory day parade. It was pair of 2 MiG-31K's armed with "Kinzhal" Long-range missiles. I'm not sure if the MiG-31K is in large service yet, but that is the most modern version of the MiG-31 weapons system.
It's called a foxhound because a foxhound, was a dog that hunters used to catch foxes. the dog had to be very fast and agile. to seek out nimble foxes.

It really does mean a lot how Matt here will give fair appraisals of equipment regardless of where it’s from or even when it’s from. A lot of us Westerners maintain very dismissive ideas about Russian weapons and Russian equipmen, a mindset that becomes even more prevalent the more someone is knowledgeable about military affairs and knows the competing Western systems. The Russians are no slouches at designing weapons. The systems are usually simpler, less polished, and less capable than premium western counterparts, but that doesn’t make them useless or without their own sort of merits, especially in terms of ability to keep them operating and ability to produce them at a needed wartime scale. For example the Russians are producing three new tanks per day right now plus refurbishments. The western M777 cannons were supposed to have a decisive advantage in reach and mobility over Russian systems, but turns out they don’t have the field endurance of platforms like the D30. The M777 frames are getting too stressed and they short of nitrogen for the recoil management.
My favourite Russian plane. It's not incredibly beautiful (although it's beautiful enough) but holy $hit, this is still the most brutally-powerful combat plane in the world by quite a margin. The last of the long-range all-weather interceptors. BTW, the Tumansky turbojet engines were in the MiG-25, the MiG-31 uses Soloviev D-30F6 turbofan engines.
Robert Owen Their pilots don’t receive too much actual combat experience, the areas the Russian military operate are either often too urban and danger close or against enemies in mountainous terrain which make it hard to operate.
This is one of my favorite Russian jets. This thing was built for one thing and one thing only. To go as fast as possible. The series of documentaries with peter ustinov is so much better than the new documentaries. No unnecessary editing and fancy effects, no annoying music, a narrator that talks in a normal speed and allows himself to take a breath between sentences.
Probably my favorite Russian fighter. Way ahead of its time with the radar and datalink and able to do something truly unique and different than its western counterparts. I think the plane still has a lot of potential as a long range missile slinging aircraft, both for air to air and for air to surface use.

Variable sweep wings were a neat idea but they’re a lot of dead weight. More modern designs with substantial computer control of flight systems mean that the variable geometry isn’t as badly needed as it was back in the day. The Tomcat never really did what it was supposed to do - defend aircraft carriers with volleys of long range missiles - an interceptor. The F/A-18E ends up being a much more practical aircraft, as “Bombcats” weren’t that great and neither is much of an air superiority fighter.
Rather advanced plane even though she’s a middle aged lady. I find that Russian technology is almost always underestimated in western militaries, due to 3rd world countries wasting their cheap export models. Too many westerners take the performances of the export variants as equal to that if their most advanced material. All too often i see people saying that we don’t know the “true” maximum performances of the latest western craft and armor because “it’s classified,” I see. And Russia publishes all of its information and weaknesses to the public for everyone to know? I find that if russian vehicles can do even 80% of what they are stated to be able to do, they are on the same level as western counterparts, or even higher.

Duececoupe I imagine some of the footage (all of it?) was reversed to try to avoid copyright infringement, since a lot of it apparently comes from a Discovery channel documentary or some such
No offense man. But there's no such thing as top 10 anything. Anti ship missiles are made according to the requirements of whoever uses them, just like every other military equipment. You can do fastest 10 Or newest 10 Or biggest 10 or whatever. But no such thing as top 10.
We reached now model "BMS" + Kinzhal capable. You forgot to mention the second most attractive feature of the plane, after it's speed. " 31 Kilomrter" altitute, that's double as high a F 35 can fly, and you can shoot every satelite down that is in lower earth orbit. The plane is over 40 years old, but still new upgraded versions have skills that can't be matched till today by any jet fighter.
This plane is easily one of my favorites. It's everything that the Soviet Union needed. It's simple, not very vunerable to EMPs, almost ludicrously fast and also with a big 30mm cannon. It's damn amazing.
While you're making videos on high-performance interceptors, I'd love to see a video on the YF-12 Blackbird, which is the little-known interceptor version of the SR-71 Blackbird.
I actually have a model of the YF-12 interceptor. It just looks like an SR-71. The USA never really did anything with it because it was atrociously expensive. It's too bad that the Pentagon doesn't have that same level of frugality when it comes to the F-35. LOL
Hey Matsimus.it took me years to notice this. The NATO destinations follow a convention of F for fighter(Fagot,Fishbed, frogfoot, foxbat etc) B for bomber ( badger, bear, backfire, blinder. ) C for cargo ( condor, Cossack, crusty etc)
Great video, you have done your homework! One thing you should have addedbthough is the latest mission of MIG31 - hypersobics Kinjal missile carrier! Oh well, I am sure you will do hypersonics at some point, maybe then ...
I would LOVE to see a MiG-31 in real life. I bet that those Soloviev engines are so powerful that you can FEEL them in your chest as it flies over or past.
This looks like it was designed with the same principle like the A-10’s “take a really big gun, build a plane around it”, except this was “take a big radar and two big ass engines, and build a plane around it”. No wonder this will survive into the 2030s.
That pilot is not chubby, he is practically using a spacesuit. Mig-31 pilots requires very rigorous health & fitness test due to stratosphere operations. Impressive plane and crews at that time.
Now that was definitely a cool looking aircraft. When I was a part of a naval flight crew, I was always afraid we would come across a Flagon. Even then they were pretty old, but could still get the job done.
oh mats, your voice its really relaxing ..... i think that mig its a pretty expensive boi. ans speaking of intercepotors a video on the f-104 would be cool, dont ya think ? :)
And yet not 1 SR-71 was ever shot down, badass aircraft though. In truth I always select it in the Ace Combat games when I know speed is the deciding factor, it's also the only craft capable of S-Ranking some missions.
This is a very good read: theaviationist.com/2013/12/11/sr-71-vs-mig-31/ . Also an exr=tract from the article:Myagkiy and its Weapons System Officer (WSO) were able to achieve a SR-71 lock on at 52,000 feet and at a distance of 120 Km from the target. The Foxhound climbed at 65,676 feet where the crew had the Blackbird in sight and according to Myagkiy: “Had the spy plane violated Soviet airspace, a live missile launch would have been carried out. There was no practically chance the aircraft could avoid an R-33 missile.” After this interception Blackbirds reportedly began to fly their reconnaissance missions from outside the borders of the Soviet Union. But the MiG-31s intercepted the SR-71 at least another time. On Sept. 3, 2012 an article written by Rakesh Krishman Simha for Indrus.in explains how the Foxhound was able to stop Blackbirds spy missions over Soviet Union on Jun. 3, 1986. That day, no less than six MiG-31s “intercepted” an SR-71 over the Barents Sea by performing a coordinated interception that subjected the Blackbird to a possible all angle air-to-air missiles attack. Apparently, after this interception, no SR-71 flew a reconnaissance missions over the Soviet Union and few years later the Blackbird was retired to be replaced with the satellites. Even if claiming that the MiG-31 was one of the causes of the SR-71 retirement is a bit far fetched, it is safe to say that towards the end of the career of the legendary spyplane, Russians proved to have developed tactics that could put the Blackbird at risk.
Every piece of tech eventually can be countered. A Jet like the Foxhound could definitely have an effect on the SR-71 since honestly it's the only aircraft of that time I would see being able to compete with the Blackbird's legendary speed and altitude records.
It is stated in the article that the Blackbird could and probably would still outrun it and it's missile at hypersonic speeds but the Mig-31 demonstrated that Russia now had the capability and also strategy down in order to ward them off and possibly even shoot them down.
The last true interceptor, made for a unique Russian need. To cover huge distances of northern European Russia and Siberia very fast looking for enemy bombers and cruise missiles, or SR 71 spy planes. It was not designed for fighter to fighter combat or ground attack unless using the new hypersonic air launched ballistic missile. It needed to be huge because it carried a huge radar, a two man crew, huge long range missiles, huge engines and lots and lots of fuel. So no dogfighter. It was never exported. And it was an excelent plane for the role it was designed for. The closest western equivalents would have been the F 14 Tomcat (but it also has to dogfight so it was an interceptor, air superiority fighter hibrid) and the British Tornado ADF, (but it was based on a long range ground attack plane), and those are now retired. Canada actually needs a plane like this.... but there is none in the western market. So they are looking at multirrole fighters who are not really designed for that role.
The MIG-31 was also not designed with Air Superiority in mind its design was as an interceptor far different then the role your thinking of. Its a great plane for when it was designed but in any fight it never stays at a distance they will eventually close and in that case the F-14 Wins. But i do like Mig 31s multi role from AWACS to interceptor
James B Pilot MiG-31 will not enter into a maneuverable battle, its speed allows you to get away from any pursuer. Radar "Zaslon-M" can detect targets at a distance of 400 km. It carries up to 4 "R-33" rockets with a range of 300 km. The missiles can be guided without illumination by AWACS. Therefore, AWACS aircraft are useless against it, the MiG 31 was designed to destroy such aircraft. Being a patriot is good, but let's be realistic.
@@jojo51886 What makes you think F-14 COULD get close "and win in that case"? For one, 400km radar and 320km missile range, 4 of them, help Mig-31 to be nearly untouchable!! And on the other hand 2 medium range missiles also help him defend from sub 150km ranges, hence "F-14 would win once he comes closer" is closer to fiction that fact.
The story goes back to the Foxbat that was build to counter the hugely expensive B-70 Valkyrie bomber that was to be Mach 3 capable - now that aircraft was cancelled - partly because it was cheaper to put up ICBM's. There was regular recce missions with SR-71 over Murmansk and in the Baltics. It was a bit fun, because the Foxbats chased the Blackbirds full tilt on their way back. Well untill the Foxbats ran out of fuel and turned back. The Russian system failed miserably - especially command-wise (they had no idea what they were doing) - and they shot down Korean Airlines flight 007. So in this context the Foxhound was the logical next step against the B-1 bomber (and Tornado for that matter). But what a Mach 2.5 capable (and I doubt the engine can take that speed for very long) aircraft has of advantage against low level targets remains a mystery to me. The countermove was basically the F-22 with stealth: Even the best radar is a bit of a moot question, when the radar cant see the bloody thing. One thing is certain: The Foxhound can be seen very far off - running into the oncoming missile in a fancy gait.
Korean Boeing? The plane flew to a naval base with nuclear submarines. The pilot's maneuvers did not respond either by radio. Mistake a few hundred kilometers? Are you sure it was a passenger plane? What kind of shit did you write about the MiG-31? MiG-31 was originally intended for intercepting cruise missiles in the entire range of altitudes and speeds, as well as low-flying satellites. A group of four MiG-31 aircraft is able to control airspace along the front line up to 1100 km. MiG-31BM maximum range of detection of air targets increased to 320 km, defeats - up to 280 km, it is not available to any other fighter, in comparison, the maximum range of damage at the nearest competitor in the range of F / A-18 Super Hornet is less by 100 kilometers.
about the korean air , either the pilot are ...... or they are spy and williing to die lol ( they think that with passenger on board the soviet wont shot , woop wrong .

No offense man. But there's no such thing as top 10 anything. Anti ship missiles are made according to the requirements of whoever uses them, just like every other military equipment.
You can do fastest 10
Or newest 10
Or biggest 10 or whatever.
It's damn amazing.
he has no cannon,he overtakes shells
lmaoo@@КириллГайдукович
I love MiG's. They put cannons that shoot extremely fast in their planes, then put like 100 rounds in.
Cannon is not very useful in this aircraft. Because, unlike most combat aircrafts, when this shoots the gun, the plane overtakes the bullets.
HEY I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL MATSIMUS YOUR AMAZING KEEP IT UP 👊
Tnx m8
One of my most favorite planes it looks so sleek and it’s fast and was effective can’t deny its recorded effectiveness in history
Outstanding bird, saw this in MAKS 2015 in moscow
thanks Maximus, awesome aircraft, bad ass long interceptor.
Beautiful Jet !
Can't wait for this module to come to DCS, I'd study everything about it
While you're making videos on high-performance interceptors, I'd love to see a video on the YF-12 Blackbird, which is the little-known interceptor version of the SR-71 Blackbird.
I actually have a model of the YF-12 interceptor. It just looks like an SR-71. The USA never really did anything with it because it was atrociously expensive. It's too bad that the Pentagon doesn't have that same level of frugality when it comes to the F-35. LOL
Avro Arrow there are some ventral fins on the YF-12 that visually distinguish it from other Blackbird variants.
actually the yf12 was the "oxcart" it was slightly shorter and faster than the sr71
Im basing my assesment at school off of this fighter this is exactly what i need right now thanks Matsimus
one of your best
Love the Home Depot caulking around the cockpit
Coolest fighter jet name Ever.
I like your profile picture xD
Better than FOXBAT??
SU-57 felon
Thank you for the great work Sir
Just love the polyfilla to seal the canopy.
if it works then it works. cost effective and no special machining required. a smart move. one reason i respect Russian military equipment.
One of my favorite my favorites MiG25/31
Can you make a video on the Kinzhal
Kinzhal is secret, not much True information.
@@Осведомлённыйисточник Sekrit? :)
so happy to hear Peter Ustinov's narration again
Hey Matsimus.it took me years to notice this. The NATO destinations follow a convention of F for fighter(Fagot,Fishbed, frogfoot, foxbat etc)
B for bomber ( badger, bear, backfire, blinder. )
C for cargo ( condor, Cossack,crusty etc)
But frogfoot isnt a fighter tho
@@thesayxx you stupid dog bro
@@ЧернаяСмородина-ю4о you dumb cat bro. Su25 is an CAS attacker not a fighter.
Nice video Mats! Keep it up!
Great video, you have done your homework! One thing you should have addedbthough is the latest mission of MIG31 - hypersobics Kinjal missile carrier! Oh well, I am sure you will do hypersonics at some point, maybe then ...
Hristo Stoyanov KHINZAL 🔥
A lot of people underestimate Russian engineering. I'm glad that you can look at it with an unbiased perspective. Respect.
Hey greetings from Russia :D I actully saw this bad bois at the Victory day parade at my city :D
I would LOVE to see a MiG-31 in real life. I bet that those Soloviev engines are so powerful that you can FEEL them in your chest as it flies over or past.
Avro Arrow
Same thing with the F-22 and F-35
It started making me sick after a while
When MIG - 31 flies over your head, its roar is loud like hell. I experienced it a few times.
This looks like it was designed with the same principle like the A-10’s “take a really big gun, build a plane around it”, except this was “take a big radar and two big ass engines, and build a plane around it”. No wonder this will survive into the 2030s.
5:53 AFAIK that equates to 18 seconds worth of trigger time.
Probably my most favorite MiG along with the MiG-21
Even if the video would be crap (I bet it won't be) I still like it 10 seconds in for two reasons:
-MIG-31
-Matsimus!
Imre Kalman haha thanks
Looked like epoxy around canopy never got sanded smooth
Love the video, by the way have you ever seen wings of the red star?
That pilot is not chubby, he is practically using a spacesuit. Mig-31 pilots requires very rigorous health & fitness test due to stratosphere operations. Impressive plane and crews at that time.
Yea, his catapulting system allows to evacuate at full speed.
Hermetic suit to avoid boiling blood UP to 19000M.
You should do a video on the Su-15 Flagon. In my opinion one of the sexiest Interceptors of all time.
Greetings from Porterville, California :)
Now that was definitely a cool looking aircraft.
When I was a part of a naval flight crew, I was always afraid we would come across a Flagon.
Even then they were pretty old, but could still get the job done.
@@timg2088 If you don’t mind me asking, what could you do if you were unfortunate enough to have encountered one?
and nobody says about variation of MIg-31 for shooting down satellites?
oh mats, your voice its really relaxing ..... i think that mig its a pretty expensive boi. ans speaking of intercepotors a video on the f-104 would be cool, dont ya think ? :)
MiG 31 Interceptor is also the platform used for air launched latest Kinzhal hypersonic missile
Hey Matsimus! Will you do a video about warfare in NBRC enviroment?
check out my channel I have already done a few videos on some
I read somewhere that it fired the Hypersonic missile in Ukraine recently, it's a fantastic aircraft indeed & looks badass too.
Waiting for MIG 41 debute
Thanks Matt🤗
Or Near space capability
Mikoyan is actually working on a MiG-41. It will still be a pure interceptor. Maybe NATO command will call it the Foxfire.
I loved those documentaries back in the day. Would watch them after Saturday morning cartoons. I was a strange child.
I thought I was gonna go to sleep, guess not now
4:00 "including this chubby little pilot" gave me a good chuckle
It's Stryker time
Love the extract from Discovery Channel’s “Weekday Wings” show from back in he 90s!! Great vid!
And yet not 1 SR-71 was ever shot down, badass aircraft though. In truth I always select it in the Ace Combat games when I know speed is the deciding factor, it's also the only craft capable of S-Ranking some missions.
Hmm I'm not saying that's not possible but citation please, because if so that's impressive.
The Foxhound climbed at 65,676 feet where the crew had the Blackbird in sight and according to Myagkiy:
“Had the spy plane violated Soviet airspace, a live missile launch would have been carried out. There was no practically chance the aircraft could avoid an R-33 missile.”
After this interception Blackbirds reportedly began to fly their reconnaissance missions from outside the borders of the Soviet Union.
Well I'm just glad the war didn't go hot in the end.
@LineOfCars And cruise missiles.
Absolutely incredible to know that this was more advanced than the US counterparts. However F-14 would have support from a dedicated AWACs bird.
James B
Pilot MiG-31 will not enter into a maneuverable battle, its speed allows you to get away from any pursuer.
@@konfor2934 exactly... awacs support lasts more than 1 min only when the mission is to bomb camel herds and date plantations...
Loving your videos! Keep up the good work mate
not sr`71 , but to shoot down b70 bomber..
If I were to describe this plane in one phrase...
An absolute unit
Maybe kfir c2?
Still on air after almost 40 years..awesome

Very informative video. Thanks.
Thomas Borgsmidt every plane with very few exceptions can be seen from very far off.
The American system failed miserably - especially command-wise (they had no idea what they are doing) - and they shot down Iran Air Flight 655.
Airlines?? Boeing? , i m done with you,,. Bullshit!
My father served as a pilot on this plane for about half year. And 11-12 years - on MiG-25.
A FOX-HOUND ?
Colonel, what's a Russian interceptor doing here ?
"TALLY-HO, THE FOXHOUND!" LOL
It would have been fun see Snake tryng to take out a Mig31 with stingers!
It is scary how is beautifull this plane..Beautifull but deadly.
T-95 “bear” next
nice video as always mate, you should do a video about the SU-34 "Fullback", that beauty is one of my favourite jets
First, and I believe, only Aircraft with Passive Electronic Scanned Array (PESA) Radar.
At some point Rafale, B-1 and B-2 also had PESA's. And the E-3 AWACS !
Su 30 mki has a passive phased array radar.
Many of the airctaft that claim AESA are actually using PESA radars such as many from the PRC..
Really love your channel keep up the great videos!
