Yep. The payout for a straight pick 3 is $500, only half of its true odds of 1 in 1000. You would have to have a way of reducing the odds in half just to break even. Winning in the long run just doesn't seem possible.
Take each number drawn in exact sequence and go 1 number below it and one number above it. So for 1234, you could have 0, 1, 2 for 1. For 2 you could have 1, 2, 3. For 3 you would have to have 2, 3, 4, and for 4 you would need 3,4,5. Again in exact sequence. I was on one of the lottery sites earlier and I couldn't believe how many idiots were asking why their tickets weren't 1 off winners when the sequence wasn't the same. You need 1 off numbers in exact sequence just as in a regular straight bet, It's not a box bet, so I don't know why this is so hard for some to comprehend.
