9th in the points and a 3 win season is a season that any driver would kill for, but Jeff Gordon isn't just any driver. This championship became more and more significant as Jeff continued past his 30's. He looked capable enough to get more titles but so many promising drivers were moving up the ladder which contributed to less wins but still dominant and the Chase was a factor as well as Jeff Gordon was better on the old Latford system where what you did over a season counted rather than a ten race stretch. To say 2001 would his final championship, it is so hard to believe because I felt like he was still capable of getting seven like Jimmie and he was good enough over the course of those seasons(2004, 2007, 2014) to win championships had the system not changed. But I think Jeff wanted to pave his own path rather than try to equal Dale Earnhardt or Richard Petty. He had so much respect for Dale and his death certainly affected him and everyone that year. It took a lot of fun out of the racing and it still shows today.

@BLACK ICEYOU It's not about effort. It's about strategy that is no doubt very different between the formats. More effort, research, and testing being put into the Chase race tracks for example. Many other factors I won't list. If you go back in time and keep the new Chase from happening, I guarantee you the results would be different. I don't know what they would be, or exactly how different they'd be, but they'd be different. I'm not going to say they would be the same because I'm not God, or Doctor Strange with the time stone.
@BLACK ICEYOU Little differences short term can lead to bigger differences long term. In Iceberg's video applying the old format into the Chase era, he says Jeff Gordon, not Kurt Busch, would win the title in 2004. Does that mean Kurt Busch leaves Roush sooner? Stays longer? He also says Jeff Gordon would win again in 2006. If so, does he retire earlier? Does the fact of other drivers finishing higher or lower in the standings change their future outlook? It's very plausible. One position difference could mean keeping of losing sponsors, and ultimately their rides.
The chase would have been introduced in 2012 if Kenseth hadn't won the championship in 2003. Look at Edward's 2011 season. His only win of the season was at the 3rd race, he led for the majority of the season and would have won the championship one race early.

It was also the first season he went winless in his entire career and was barely a factor in the chase.
2008 wasn't too bad other than the zero wins part. 13 top fives, 19 top tens, and 4 poles isn't too shabby. If not for the early wreck in the fall Talladega race and a blown motor at Phoenix, he would've finished 3rd in the points. He had top five cars in both events. 2010 was pretty good during the first half of the year and then he struggled to finish inside of the top ten alot after Watkins Glen. In two of the final three races he finished 37th. He would go winless again. If I had to pick a bad season for Gordon other than his rookie season and 2005, 2010 would earn my vote.

He was a VERY GOOD driver.. the personal life decisions he made back in the 90's though cost him a GREAT chance at 7 championships and 106 Wins.. He was on track to reach those by the end of 98... should not of married young... damn shame... GREAT career #'s no less though...
You should do a video on Ricky Rudd cause he seems interesting to talk about
if Ricky Rudd wouldn't have had so much bad luck in 01 he would have been the champion. there was about 5 races or so that year he was LEADING or in contention late in the race when someone would wreck and take him out
I was a Jeff Gordon fan growing up i faintly remember his dominant 1998 season but i remember the 2001 season very well i loved that season so much other than Dale getting killed and Jeff won at my first nascar race in person the inaugural race at Kansas Speedway
It's crazy to see that the grandstands were pretty full!!!
emiliorod24 Agreed...couldn’t believe Chicagoland & Daytona this year..Texas & Bristol as well. Safe to say the NASCAR fad is officially over..
@@eastsidebadger8416 500 was sold out, Talladega and Charlotte looked pretty full, along with a few others. Biggest problem with attending the race now, isn't the product, it's the price gouging by hotels and other rentals. They charge upwards of 5x as much as they would usually. A $60/hotel hotel becomes a $300/night hotel.
Lucas Cram Wow..that makes sense then. Going to Daytona next year & my wife suggested we rent a 5th wheel & camp at the track..at 1st I thought she was crazy because of the humidity..sounds like the right idea now.
Championship Seasons: Dale Earnhardt 1994
I was at that Michigan race, sitting in the pits right behind Gordon's pit. It was frickin awesome.
Finally! Thanks BFM!
If only my hero would've won more championships.

Should be a 7 time champ...
Great video I miss on the track.

1998 was way better
would've been nice if the chase was never inducted into nascar
Yeah, because the race results and points standings would've been EXACTLY the same as they were with the chase, right?
If it wasn't for Matt kenseth the Chase wouldn't have started
This is what it would look like if nascar never doctor the chase system.

How bout this? Championship Seasons: Mike Skinner 1995 (when he won the inaugural truck series championship)
Can you do videos on the outcome of chase seasons if the old points system was used?
Eyy 24 Team, this should be your throwback this year. All will be forgiven if you do this.
Championship Season Jimmie Johnson 2006
I'd say more like his 2009 season, that season is absolutely amazing to look at.
Could you do one of these for a Richard petty season that would be awesome
This might piss off Gordon fans, but how about Jimmie Johnson championship season 2007?? I still remember that season for jj, it was a great year to be a Jimmie Johnson fan, i remember when he won the title, i yelled pretty loud, i was so happy about that
Never liked Jimmy Johnson..... ungrateful brat from what i seen..
Gordon should have won 2007. 30 top 10s is no joke. but Jimmie also got 10 wins that year
Should've showed what happened with the rain in the All-Star race
I wanted to be related to Robbie Loomis so badly
Compilation of Dale Jarrett's "Not tooo goood" moments?
Good seasons Matt Kenseth 2013: championship seasons : Martin Truex Jr 2017
Nice video
JG the 🐐
Jeff won by over 300 points because even on his worst days he managed good finishes while his competitors got DNFs.
And Jarrett also got injured to, taking out his biggest competition
@@needsmetal Not exactly. DJ broke his ribs in qualifying for the Coca Cola 600. In the races leading up to the season-turning Pennsylvania 500, Jarrett and Gordon were tied for the points lead, a solid two months after Jarrett broke his ribs. It was the Pocono late-race double-fumble of Jarrett that also started not only his downward spiral out of the points lead, but his career as well.
@@badbooking3221 that's what I mean by injured and I thought he also had concussion to later on the year
@@needsmetal That Kansas wreck was more or less a crap sundae on top of a falling star. Also its a wreck Jarrett admitted to in later years as one that maybe he should have sat out a race on.
Bad Seasons: Jeff Gordon 2010.
And 2008.
Camtheman 33 The reason I say it is a bad season is because it is a lot like Brad Keselowski’s 2013 season, Gordon was winning race after race in 2007 and it looked like he had the tittle raped until Jimmie caught lightning in a bottle and beat him.
Should have had 3 more after this... the Chase Sucks!
Thank god it was over.
You’d never hear the end of it if he had eclipsed dale and the king

Championship Season Earnhardt 1990
I love Gordon's rainbow and blue & red flame schemes way more than his ugly AARP scheme!
Had there been a 16 driver playoff in 2000, he would've been the champion. It was one of his worst years, that's how flawed the system is.
Nah. Labonte would have won the championship anyway. He was unstoppable in 2000.

Alexander Pifari Aw hell nah 😂
That was a Bullshit championship, with him winning only 1 race.
@@cptepic5664 he was consistent just liked Benny Parsons he also won 1 race and won the championship.
He would’ve won way more championships had the stupid chase and playoff systems never been put in place. Rewarding drivers for being more consistent for 10 races instead of a full season is silly
Look how full indy was looked sold out in 2001
Championships season Danica Patrick 2018
